General Gaming / RE:PC controller help
« on: February 25, 2004, 04:46:26 AM »
I have decided on "Thumpmaster Firestorm Dual power 3" controller.  it is like a dual shock sony controller mixed with the gamecube shape.  I just have to make sure I have USB on my kind of oldish pc...how do I tell?  I know I am not using anything with USB right now.

KDR, I'd recommend checking out the dual power 3 as it has sticks and -pad.  I found using one of the ign links in an above post.

Cool info!  Probably a stupid question but where do you guys/gals buy these?
Guess I'll do a google search for those controller models, or maybe check www.newegg.com or www.pricewatch.com.
I am new to buying pc gaming items.

General Gaming / PC controller help
« on: February 24, 2004, 05:12:30 AM »
Hi, anyone have a suggestion for the best, most solid, confortable, and versitle PC controller?

It is for playing classic style games (2d, sprite based classics, many barrowing from nintendo concepts like a mario clone, a tetris clone, etc.), very much like playing SNES type games on PC.

Is there a way to use a SNES controller (through an adapter or something) with my PC?

Is there a comparable controller for use on the PC?

Thanks for any help!

I bought both 1 and 2 from bestbuy.com for $20 each and free shipping.  Check there for the best prices and quick shipping (3-4 days).
I found those deals using the "amazing deals" thread on this forum...check it often for deals on many many many many great games that you missed out on by waiting on your GC purchase.

I bought  SMB2 for $20, and was shipped free.  I did not like it and sold it for $38 on ebay.
Too many "chance" levels that took the whole gameplay away and made it pure luck if you made it through.  Disappointing and not fun.

Then I bought SMB1 for the levels that you are in control of.  Still hard but challenging, not stupid like I thought lots of the SMB2 levles were.
I love SMB1, it looks identical, controls the same, and the levels are really cool, unlike SMB2.\

1 disadvantage is SMB1 did not have the mini games as fine tuned (like monkey target and race), but it still has enough to keep you busy.
If you want Monkey ball for the minigames/party games go with 1 and 2, if mostly for the marblemadness levels defintly SMB1

Sorry
Mario (on page 3) stated similar ideas which I had in my  post (on page 5).
I only read the first page and began brainstorming in my own post.
You know what they say..."great minds...   ...play nintendo"

I do not know really know what to think of this yet.
But it got me thinking of uses in game for it.

Maybe Mario128 is actually for this device (remember rumors of it NOT being on GC?)
And remeber the rumors of it being a 2D/3D hybrid?  1 screen 2D, the other 3D at the same time?

Or what about Zelda games that you see in first person (this would be alot like metroid prime), and the other screen is either OOT style, or overhead Link to the past style.

Or Zelda wind waker style literally warps to the other screen into another "world" and actually is able to turned into realistic graphics/settings.

Or smash bros. game that when you SMASH the players gets belted onto the other other screen for additonal power ups, or additional fighting, or whatever.

Think of the 2nd screen as another world, another goal, another view, another room, another menu, another player (?), or how about a FPS with your perspective on 1 screen, the enemies on the other?  or a racing game with similar concepts?

Or racing with a view from the drivers seat, and one overhead, or 1 view of outside shot, 1 of the gauges?

But I think Nintendo would have developed more uses than dual screens, OTHER than alternate views.

maybe onscreen characters controlled by 1 at the same time (think Pikmin 2)?

And imagine carrying this thing around "is that a THIRD PILLAR in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Prince of Persia kicks so much booty!
« on: January 14, 2004, 04:49:43 AM »
SPOILERS (maybe?)

I agree with the above post...only not quite as harsh as paladin put it.

I breezed through the game so swiftly that I dont even really feel like I play it.  Nothing sticks with me at all.
The fighting is very much hack and slash, only slightly more fun, because it "looks cool".

Extremely easy overall.  From the many save points to the rewind, to the giving away of ANY mystery (with those stupid "visions" that show step by step what to do).

For anyone that ever beat a tomb raider game back when they were prominate, this will feel like nothing at all.  The puzzles are very basic, and disappointing, and they give you the answers before you even have a chance to think about it.  Visuals are decent for a game widespread on every console, but the character models look like last generation, and many rooms are quite bare.  There are some neat effects, but nothing like wind waker effects (remember seeing that flying dragon with all the ashes floating in the wind the first time, or the first time you approached the ice or fire islands?WOW)

The whole game is literally as short as 1-2 dungeon in Ocarina of time (for example).
Replay value: ABSOLUTE ZERO!!!  Nothing at all changes, nothing left to see (not much the first time through either).  To replay would become mindless runaround hack, jump, beat it 5 hours type thing.  if that's your bag, have fun, but I personally am reasy to move on.

The story has been documented on many sites for being good and addicting.  Well, that is not true, there is a only very brief outline of a "story", which is nothing more than a plot setting.  Nothing unpredictable, nothing suprising, and nothing but...a mere video game.

Very overratted indeed.  Although I think everyone was praising it because it is on all platforms...it is a game "everyone can enjoy" without bickering over what console it is on.

I do like UbiSoft, they have stepped up this generation, and this game is well done, only way over hyped, and way too easy, and way way way to short...although if it was any longer I would have been bored with the few things you do; for example: run across a gap, grab the pole, swing, jump, fight some pathetic -but annoying battles, deal with a camera system that is much worse than Mario sunshine (which some had a problem with and bitched about constantly), the beat one (!) I guess what you would call, a boss battle.  End of game.

Only buy it used/cheap, or rent for a few hours and you will have sucked the life from the game in less than 10 EASY hours.

that's all folks...I am going to play wind waker again.  or maybe major's mask.  Something real, with some substance and depth.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Zelda Bonus Disc....?
« on: December 11, 2003, 07:30:11 AM »
Mine was shipped in the batch on Nov. 20th, and recieved today!  Took 3 weeks.
They are sending me another, and I WILL return it.  This whole Zelda collection was generous of NOA to do, especially sending the "backup" disc without any proof that I didnt recieve the original, and I am not going to be one of the losers that tries get take for anything I can.

Then again, it makes you think they have literally millions of copies that 'need' liquidate in a certain time.
Maybe they will use in a press release after the holiday season "20 million Zelda disc were shipped during the holiday period, and sony can suck it" type thing.
Either way, thanks to NOA for making this Zelda thing happen.

I was (and maybe still) going to get racing evolution, but the reviews and previews have not got me 'that' excited for it.  I was a huge rage racer fan.

Regarding pacman...does anyone know if you can also just play plain old 1 player pac man with it, too?

I love pacman, and it was the first real video game fad, I'd love to have an accurate version of the arcade maze/colors playable with this new multi-player version.

TalkBack / RE:Surprises from Nintendo in the Future
« on: November 26, 2003, 04:26:30 AM »
I have some ideas about the "new game product".

1.) animal crossing 2: been in development for a long time, maybe since before AC was released, as that game was an N64 crossover.   I mean you could certainly call AC unconventional, and now Nin knows it is popular and a "game" very easily enjoyed and
played by anyone that can read.  Casual gamers loved it, people that hadn't played games for years bought this to play with their families.  It could be a huge new nintendo franchise and/or liscenced product that makes AC2 totally unique.  Some people speculated that the new game product could be Mario 128, but if you going to consider including a game in this "new game product" catagory, you would have to inclusde AC2.

1a.) some sort of hard drive (or one of those unreleased super memory cards -do not remember the name) with animal crossing 2 installed and ready to go, possibly with online of some kind (more elaborate than password trading, but probably not total online -maybe trading clothing designs, and patterns, or downloading more games).

2.) iQue Worldwide version, probably under a different name and a huge back catalog of games.   Yes, the china version has been anouced and released, but man I really think this is what is coming, or a more modern version, maybe even some different controller design(s).   "not a console - not a handheld"...hmm.  Sounds like an iQue like product.

« on: November 24, 2003, 06:28:49 AM »
FPS don't appeal to me.  I bought this game after playing metroid prime, and was hoping for a similar experience...nope, metroid is much different and very special.

\EDIT: nevermind. I will sell it on ebay, I didn't think it was approriate to offer the game here.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:GBA Player questions
« on: November 23, 2003, 04:13:31 PM »
Cool info.  Thanks.
Link to the past is my biggest reason for this question, even though I didnt list it in the first post.  To hear it looks a little worse is a little discouraging.  Not that it will make a huge difference in such a great game.  I just want the best games in their best versions.

Any other opinions on the GBA Player vs. SNES (re: display/graphics/colors/overall game versions)?

Wish I didn't sell the SNES so many years ago.

As far as color, I have purple, so I don't mind the black GBA player, although if I had a platinum cube I would want it to match.

Nintendo Gaming / GBA Player questions
« on: November 23, 2003, 01:52:43 PM »
I was wondering if games using the GBA player looks as good as the SNES versions.
I love the games from SNES days: mario world, mario kart, f zero, and some of the rpgs are great.  The thought of combining some of the best from the SNES days with the best GC games is very appealing...it would be an incredible permanant collection of games!

Anyone UNhappy with their GBA Player?  If yes why?

And can someone set me straight on the display?  Poorer, equal, or better than the SNES versions?

One more: is black still the only color available for the GBA Player?

Ebay user ID's to avoid.
These have been confirmed as selling pirated GBA games!
I am in the process of going after them.  This violates several laws, including mail fraud.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Advertising BLITZ!!!!!!
« on: June 25, 2003, 06:07:52 AM »
The SC2 ad was about "links got a new adventure now"  "ONLY ON NIN GC!!!!"It showed amazing foorage of Link fighting and said it was exclusive...NICE to see NIN actually doing something.
Graphics freaks are going to go apesh!t over these games.  F-zero ad was short but "only NIN GC this fall".
They really need to show their exclusive games...even ones that have been out for a while.  The general public still doesn't know about SSB:M, Pikmin, metroid, zelda or Mario sunshine, super monkey ball 2, eternal darkness...Man nintendo has a gold mine with these great games...SHOW THEM!

I have just dealt with that ebay seller.
I have not gotten the game yet.  it was "brand new" in the deescription.
Do the pirated games play normally?  How do they copy and manufacture games?
And..what should I do about the seller "blamofyouth" if/when the item shows up and is pirated?

Where can I find your email address Superlink?
I do not see a profile or anything...probably my fault that I dont see it.

I can try to offer some safe tips to try, but I would rather keep it out of the forums if we're having a one on one conversation.

Nintendo Gaming / broken gamecube...suggestions?

Superlink, I will have to revise my previous post.  When FedEx showed up for the pick up I got some extra details that I either misinterpreted, or musunderstood.
It willl not be a free of charge traditional warrenty deal.  I am paying for the parts, or something.  I need to look into it further to see what exactly is happening.
In the meantime, I can help you through email.
If your email is not in your profile, let me know what it is, and I'll be in touch.

Nintendo Gaming / broken gamecube...suggestions?
« on: May 22, 2003, 03:13:56 PM »
I wanted to follow up.
NOA called me tonight after I sent some brutal, but honest e-mails detailing what I had learned about these "unknown" problems.
Without further adue, I got the extended warrenty + free shipping (I ORIGINALLYTHOUGHT = see below).
The service guy was not real thrilled with my existence, but hey when "da man"z gut yer balls....SCREAM"
Thanks for the input.

EDIT: I have to revise this, as it looks as if I had jumped the gun. FedEx had some details on this, Nintendo is paying for shipping, and it lookslike the repair will bee paid by me, or partially by me (maybe parts=me, labor rate=nintendo).
I think Nintendo deals with people on an individual basic, so explain to them this "disk read" error, and that you KNOW they have had MANY repairs of this nature. It looks like it may due the part supplied by IBM, and it seems like the intitial batch of indigo cubes should have had some sort of recall.
Thats my theory anyway.

It's always the guys who preorder and jump right on buying the new system at full price when it comes out that get screwed...the most loyal people...ironic.
Good luck...

Thanks for the tip epitaph, but there is no way it worn out.  I am not a hardcore gamer...well, only hardcore in the quality of games I perfer, not in the time spent with gaming.

Also, there are no repair centers in many parts of the country.
It's kinda funny (not) to see how widespread, and well-known this problem is...and yet the service center has never heard of it.
Lying is offensive.
Cheers to all!

No, the guy at nintendo was an arrogant snotty whiner.  He flat out said "uhh...no, no we have NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE...it's...it's ugh a strange one".

I have a solution to this problem.  I will get the GC repleaced, and will not buy it, or steal it.
And it's all on our good lil' buddies at nintendo

They also started it would be a 2 week minimum turn arounf time.
This is frustrating dealing with customer service that could not care less.

Class action lawsuit anyone?  (this was a joke  ...sort of)

I have been reading some additional message boards investigating this, and LOTS and lots of people have had the exact problem.

I won't be buying another one.

Well, I have had the GC for a little over a year.  Never had a problem, and actually have not used it much.

It is clean, the games are perfect condition, and I have plenty of ventilation.

Last night playingg Mario Sunshine I got several "can not read disc" errors.  Thought maybe it was getting heated up, even though I has pnly played for 20 minutes.  So I let it cool over night, tried it today, and is was progresivly getting worse.  Had the same errors on other games.

Called Nintendo, and got 1 option: send it in for a minimum of $75!!!!  No other options.
This GC has been taken care, stored clean, lots of breathing room, no additional parts are on it, and inly 1 adult user, and the customer service dick tells me it is $75 or buy a new one"
Sound like crap to me, and I've heard lots of good things about nintendo service.  I am very annoyed by this.

Any suggestions?
