no one's forcing you to read this, tough guy... you can easily grunt and scratch your armpits somewhere else.

the idea is to hear what fellow nintendo fans want to see from the company. no one here is daydreaming about actually taking the reigns... i hope.

on that note, if i was running nintendo i would make the next system have divx movie playback. for what purpose, i will leave up to your imagination.

i gather that we all tend to agree that nintendo has a huge image problem. it's basically keeping them from attaining true mainstream success. the problem we can guess is the games.

so how does nintendo continue to give loyal nintendo gamers what they want (established franchises) while diversifying their portfolio so that their "kiddy" games are dilluted a bit by other games? normally, third parties should help in this aspect, but we've learned that this simply isn't the case for nintendo consoles as third parties don't believe "mature" titles will sell well on the system or that the primary audience for gamecube are children.

so, i dunno what nintendo's new tokyo studio is responsible for, but nintendo definately needs to open a new in house development house or two that will specialize in crafting games that contrast their current "cartoony" style while keeping the same emphasis on gameplay... and i don't mean blood and guts and death and satan and shooting hookers, but definately ediger titles than what we've come to expect from nintendo. perhaps more story-oriented titles. some deep plotlines to compliment the fluff we're used to. basically i would have nintendo diversify it's inhouse portfolio. this is so obvious that it doesn't need to be said and i can't understand why nintendo hasn't acted on this, but it's important to keep the family friendly games, but also give something to those that want something MORE.

yay.

just to lend credibility to those rumors of the game only coming out to xbox, all screenshots and footage released thusfar for this game has been of the xbox build.

as much as i would love to see it on the cube (and i would definately buy it), i really wouldn't be surprised to hear that microsoft had nabbed exclusive rights to it or that the gamecube version was canned.

it's no secret that nintendo is lagging behind the xbox in almost every region except for japan. this of course sucks and i wish i could do something about it, but alas i am just a lowly fanboy so i am relegated to set up a soapbox in a forum. anyway, i think it will be interesting to see some of the ideas you guys have floating around.. to get started here's a few of the things i would be doing to help improve nintendo's position current generation and otherwise:

- put connectivity on the backburner. not only has it failed to catch on, but it's very apparent to the general population that the idea is still under development. slip connectivity under the covers until such a time that an idea is developed that will truly blow people away and THEN reintroduce it. it's just too gimmicky right now.

- online. even though i personally have little or no interest in this aspect of console gaming, it's become clear that there is a pretty large market for it. since hosting servers would cost money and nintendo clearly does not want to charge money for people to play online games, the only solution would be to release server software alongside online games. it's safe to assume that anyone that has internet also has a computer. provide a means for people to start their own servers. the most nintendo would need to do is provide a central list of all active servers that people can try to connect to. this will encourage communities to bloom, and could be a temporary solution until a more solid online plan is formed.

- shinji mikami has stated he would like to work on a nintendo franchise. and even though it's in the very capable hands of retro, i can't help but feel that a shinji mikami developed 3rd person metroid game would kick some serious ass. the first person perspective probably put off a lot of metroid fans even though it was executed almost perfectly. a 3rd person perspective would have a broader appeal and almost guarantee more casual gamer interest.

- a grown up pokemon. the pokemon gameplay is tried and true. it's obvious that people still love the sons of bitches. however, the kids are growing up. as such a second line of pokemon games should come out with darker monster designs and a deeper storyline. while the cutesy pokemon continue to appease school children, the new pokemon will intrigue gamers that have always wondered why everyone loves the games so much, but were too afraid to check it out due to the kiddy nature of it.

- realistic link. as much as i love the cel-shaded link there is clearly a huge demand for a realistic link. nintendo would be wise to appease these rabid fans with what they've been hoping for since majora's mask. making it a launch title with the next nintendo console will almost ensure the system will have a quick start and an immediate impact in gamers' minds.

- zelda rpg. with square enix still unsure whether nintendo's home console is a viable platform to develop for, give them a huge license to play with that will almost guarantee huge sales by name association alone. the zelda universe is deep enough that square can craft a deep and involving storyline and maybe they would see fit to finally give link a voice as well. do away with the excessive cinematics and spoken dialogue and deliver a solid battle system and this game will fly off the shelves benefitting both square enix and nintendo. win win situation, and an investment worth making.

- mario's return to 2d. i don't care what you think of mario64 and mariosunshine. those are great games. however, we can all agree that the absolute best mario games have been 2D... the next mario game should return to the 2D plane even if it must use 3D graphics (think viewtiful joe) ... not only will this eliminate the need to program an intelligent camera (a major gripe with the 3d marios) but it will be a return to the series' roots which is something that many people would appreciate. making it a launch title for the next system alongside a realistic zelda will be a huge blow to the competition.

- hire a new graphic design team. the domestic box art for nintendo's games need work. box art should be eyecatching and stand out on the shelves. as it stands nintendo's games fade in alongside the mass of crappy 3rd party ports. they don't prompt people to pick up the box and check it out and thus there are fewer impulse buys by casual gamers.

- ENSURE multiplatform 3rd party titles have a little something extra for gamecube owners. in exchange nintendo should advertise these games for the 3rd party, STRESSING the console specific features... making it apparent that the nintendo version is the version to own. this will help 3rd party game sales on the gamecube, an area which is sorely lacking.

- develop new franchises that have a broader appeal. imagine a new nintendo platformer starring a spikey haired wolverine with a cocky smirk, an ever present scowl, fangs, and sharp claws tearing through an army of killer robotic monkeys... tell me that wouldn't be a good time. basically nintendo has gotten way too comfortable staying within the confines of their established franchises. time to push some boundaries!

i could probably think of a few more.. but uhh.. i should probably leave some room for other people's ideas.

I don't even know why I am continuing to talk to you.  You have already proven to me that you are one of the biggest morons that I know, and every word you say afterward just seals the deal.

lies... everyone knows that the files in your cache aren't active on their own. assuming that you are right and that you download these ads regardless of whether their windows are allowed to load or not (which i still fail to believe).. the ad files would just be sitting there in your cache until they are called by the browser. the html in the ad won't be sending data back to the ad tracker. it would just be dead weight. you know what it means to cache a website? it means to save the files so that they're ready to go when you actually USE it instead of downloading it again. since you will never load this particular cached item, it will never send data to the ad tracker, and pgc will never get paid for your particular impression.

the whole point of a popup killer is not only to kill the popup, but also to prevent the impressions from "landing".. the idea is to show these ad servers that popups aren't delivering impressions and to stop using this method of advertising entirely.

notice how i'm capable of constructing a response without name calling? there are no girls to impress here.. stop trying to act so macho.

PGC needs the revenue generated from having the adds to pay their server costs, so obviously they arn't going anywhere, especially when they are so adamant in keeping it free (and rightly so, top work lads)

sure, and as a "customer" i think i should be able to express my concerns to see if anything can be done about them. i was certainly hoping for a better response than "go somewhere else then" .. whatever..

if you weren't so blinded with your hatred for someone that actually has the balls to criticize pgc, you'd see that the popup issue is just a part of the point i'm making. i'll try it once more: the number of ads (popup and otherwise) on pgc do not justify the content on the site. i attempted to prove this with the list of links i provided which displayed sites with similar amounts or more content with a fraction of the ads or no ads at all. granted pgc probably has more visitors than those sites, but i doubt pgc gets more visits these days than it did in it's prime, so the actual increase in the number of ads since then baffles me. okay? if you can't accept this piece of criticism and opt instead to insult my intelligence, then so be it. nothing i can do about your ignorance and immaturity. my only intention was to bring this subject to light and see if there was something that could be done about it. pgc was the first nintendo-themed site i've ever bookmarked and visited daily. forgive me for showing concern over it's downward slide.

now, you can continue to call me names and attempt to belittle the opinions and concerns that i have, but that doesn't change the fact that pgc could use some improvements... in the ad department and otherwise.

i do have to address the following:

Quote
Popup killers don't prevent the ads from loading, they prevent them from displaying. Whoever told you otherwise is outright lying, or describing a shoddy product. I am not hurting PGC's revenue one bit by running a popup killer.

so grey ninja, you're trying to tell me popup killers don't prevent the ads from loading? really? where do you suppose these ads load then, when you instantaneously close the window these ads are supposed to appear in? do they load in some kind of magic popup heaven and then beam down transmissions to the webserver that tracks these ads? oh wait, you have one of those advanced popup killers that prevents the windows from even opening in the first place? where do you suppose those ads load? in a magical void in the internet that enables websites to generate ad revenue for not displaying their ads? where can i sign up for that? it sounds like free money! you'll have to forgive my sarcasm, but i'd really like to hear your explaination for that ridiculous comment you made.

well since you all think it's outrageous that i visit sites that don't have popups, allow me to show you a few GREAT sites, that have no popups and little to no advertising, yet offer similar/more/better content than pgc.. then maybe all you adamant defenders of all things pgc will realize there actually are BETTER nintendo/videogame sites out there and stop insulting me for expressing my personal grievances with a website that i've watched spiral downward into crappiness.

http://www.nintendojo.com (nintendo)
http://www.n-philes.com (nintendo)
http://www.ultimategamez.com (nintendo)
http://www.nintendoinsider.com (nintendo)
http://www.n-gamer.com (nintendo)
http://www.gamerfeed.com (multi-platform)
http://www.polygonmag.com (multi-platform)
http://www.eurogamer.net (multi-platform)

i could go on and on... assuming the mods won't delete the list of links i just posted, or this post entirely, you will see that i get more than enough videogame coverage, without paying a penny, without having to install additional software, and without having to close popup ads..

mouseclicker, you obviously don't visit many sites if you think pgc has the best news and features on the net. gimme a break.

grey ninja, i'm glad you enjoy your popup killer.

honestly guys, listen to yourselves... your popup-killer arguements still baffle me.. if you're all using popup killers, pgc is NOT getting paid for them.. and since pgc seems to be actively ENCOURAGING it's users to use popup killers, why even bother having them in the first place??? it's the most idiotic thing ever.

and rick, it really says something about how much you care about your readers when you would rather tell them to piss off then to actually look at the situation and try to think of compromises or alternate methods of generating revenue... to that i give you the glorious one finger salute. try to remember that without readers your site is NOTHING. i may be the only one who has really spoke up about this, but i can guarantee you that i'm not the only one that feels this way. don't let a few asskissers fool you into believing that pgc is still as great and respected as it once was.

rick -- i was referring to the days WHEN billy was still managing the site. popups simply were not an issue... on top of that we got unique content like the tour through nintendo HQ and adventures in japan and louie the cat rumor mills etc, etc... i think it's fair to say that the site hasn't been nearly as great as it used to be, and the increase in advertisement only pounds that truth home even more. i'm not complaining about this stuff just to be an dick... i feel these are genuine complaints.

i think it's unfair to have this "install software on your computer or suffer the consequences" philosophy of site management. i shouldn't have to install a popup blocker just for this one site. especially not when, like i said, there are several other similar sites that can deliver me the exact same content without the large number of ads. besides, if you're encouraging your readers to install popup blockers, you're not going to be getting revenue from them anyway, so why don't you just get rid of them? popup blockers aren't perfect, they often require configuring and turning off and on as they sometimes block legitimate content. pain in the ass.

gamespot and ign offer rich media content. video reviews, video caputres, screen shots, and not to mention regular editorial content and articles, along with timely reviews. how can you even begin to compare what pgc offers to that of those 2 big sites? when pgc starts delivering content like those sites, i would gladly sit through the ads, or hell even pay for it.

basically what i'm getting at is that the content for this site isn't worth all the ads i get slammed in my face. i can deal with popups if the content is compelling enough for me to suffer through it... but come on, interstitial ads, 2 - 3 popups per page, 4 - 6 inline ads per page... it's all a little much... and taking a look at the string of updates for the past month, there's little to nothing that makes me want to go and install an additional piece of software for my computer.

call me a whiney bitch, but the ad situation has gotten out of hand on PGC.. there are now 3-4 banner ads and 2 popup ads for each page... now if PGC was offering special content to justify this sort of thing then i wouldn't mind. as it stands, there is nothing that appears on planet gamecube that doesn't appear on other sites... other sites that DON'T have 5 billion popup ads... other sites that have triple the coverage (multiplatform sites)!!!

i seem to recall the billy managed PGC to have done just fine without the absurd amount of ads and the site had way better content. now, it just feels like someone is trying to cash in on the site while providing the bare minimum of mediocre content for the site.

this isn't a threat.. i'm already done with this site and won't be visiting again for a very long time, if ever again. just thought you'd like to know WHY. i will probably still lurk in the forums once in awhile though... cheers.

i understand the need for advertisements, but it would be nice if pgc had standards for ads.. intrusive ads that obstruct content i think are counterproductive.. you may be getting paid more for them, but you're also pissing off your readers (i would like to take that nike ad and pull it's pants down in a busy public place for example).. so which is more important to pgc? a few extra cents per impression* or your readers?

* i have no idea how you're getting paid for that nike ad

yeah, the cube controller is not fighter friendly.. at least not in the street fighter 2D context.. it should be fine for soul calibur2 cuz i played the demo and had no problems...

but there is a controller adapter you can buy where you can use your ps/ps2 controller on your cube.. and that works fine for my capcomvssnk2 sessions. i believe it's called the playcube and it's put out by nyko

Nintendo Gaming / genius sonority's first cube game.. REVEALED! WOW!
« on: June 29, 2003, 02:42:42 PM »
while i was randomly surfing around the net, i came across the genius sonority website... genius sonority of course being a company funded by nintendo's fund-q program (i think) ..

anyway, i dunno if this has been established by anyone yet, but genius sonority's first game will not be an epic rpg or anything truly new or unique...  they are developing pokemon colosseum for gamecube.

in fact, browsing other parts of the website, it's revealed that the pokemon company owns a stake in the company.. this probably means that any gamecube version of pokemon is probably gonna be handled by genius sonority, which also means that they'll be too busy making pokemon games to make any epic rpgs that we might have been expecting before... especially since they only have a small team of 32 people according to the website... blah

have a look for yourselves: genius sonority official website

i remember reading this rumor post somewhere, and as far as i know they didn't say nintendo was acquiring two development studios.. they were acquiring the services of two game developers.. as in the people... it wouldn't surprise me in the least if shinji mikami is one of them seeing as he seems to be having a falling out at capcom.. plus he would be great for helping nintendo develop more "mature" games inhouse... as for the other one, i have no idea...

Nintendo Gaming / 2D needs to make a come back...
« on: May 29, 2003, 05:47:00 PM »
having recently played the demo for viewtiful joe, i believe there is still a lot of potential for 2D gameplay.. i think we're getting too obsessed with huge 3D worlds and losing sight of the foundations that videogames were built on... viewtiful joe is a testament that 2D gameplay is still fun and refreshing...  viewtiful joe is a testament that we have not exhausted 2D gameplay...

i for one would love to see the next mario game return to the 2D plane.. even if they have to use polygon graphics instead of animated sprites... as fun as mario64 and sunshine are, i think we can all agree that they don't quite compare to mario 1,3 (2 doesn't count ) or mario world...  yoshi's island also still stands as one of the greatest platforming games ever... hell, the castlevania games on the gba are selling pretty well.. that's got to mean something... i think developers should consider 2D gameplay more often instead of defaulting to 3D... 2D is due for a comeback, and i for one, hope that viewtiful joe helps spark it...

(subliminal message, buy viewtiful joe when it comes out)

Nintendo Gaming / Cube at E3, strong enough?
« on: May 16, 2003, 09:38:51 PM »
nintendo was selling connectivity between the gba and gcn hard! unfortunately i don't believe it has as huge of potential as nintendo believes.. none of that stuff is going to make people that don't have a gamecube want to get one... i consider myself a pretty big nintendo fan, and even i can't get excited about the connectivity.. nor can i get excited about all of the multiplayer stuff really.. i'm mostly a singleplayer gamer and i felt pretty left out... so no, nintendo's e3 showing was not nearly strong enough.

if this is the first gamecube game to use divx, it doesn't show.. i thought the fmv looked like the standard gamecube fare.. well maybe a LITTLE bit better than the usual gamecube fare.. but hardly the leap i would expect from divx compression.. bottom line, it still doesn't look at all like dvd quality...

that aside, the game did feel rushed and clunky.. the popup is pretty horrible, but framerates stayed smooth for the most part... shooting the guns feels a lot more difficult than it should.. i would say dead to rights had an awesome control set up for gun fights and i wish this game had the same kind of feel... instead it's hard to get a bead on your enemies and you can never tell if you're actually hitting them with your shots or not...  the camera for the most part behaves by staying behind you until you go into kung fu fighting mode... but it does tend to screw up every once in awhile and leave you disoriented... graphics are highly average and looks pretty unpolished...

i hope it gets better as i continue to play it.

i don't think that cinescape article justified an angry letter.. it simply pointed out the truth... and the truth is nintendo could work harder to secure third party games that AREN'T remakes.. you hafta admit it's kinda silly that we get two sonic ports before we get an original game in the form of billy hatcher.. it's also kind of silly that konami's first big game for the cube is a remake.. a remake of a brilliant game mind you, but still a remake...

i however agree that the RE remake was required to introduce the series to an entirely new userbase...
