Nintendo Gaming / RE:the deal with the new star wars?
« on: November 01, 2003, 03:39:06 AM »
It's not that I do not respect opinions, just so long as they are not parroted.

The game is not that bad as a whole and I think that the on foot segment on Geonosis was pretty cool as well as rescuing Princess Leia from the Death Star.

Ugh! Too many critics!

The game is worthy of the Rouge Squadron name.

Factor 5 was showing you the inspiration for the title, from the unlockable Starwars arcade games included in the disc. Hell they said it in the in game documentary.

EGM also said that the on foot missions were inspired by the classic Robotron 2084 game (page 86, issue 169 "Sonic Heroes cover" opinionated E3)

The whole game is homage to classic 70's arcade games (the 70's being the time when the Star Wars series first appeared).

The on foot levels are short and done in tongue in cheek for a film that (if you observe the cinemas in this game) never took it self too seriously to begin with.

Factor 5 got it right.

And I love this game.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:New York Post slams Nintendo
« on: September 13, 2003, 05:14:38 AM »
Eww! The New York Post?

I find that most people read that filthy rag is simply because it has "color!"

It's catered more toward folk from the Hamptons and Long Island, where most of the Republican fascist trash in New York City tends to live.

I'd never take their words to heart. Let alone about the Gamecube.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo announces new games, rewards
« on: August 08, 2003, 04:38:04 AM »
Boy I think this is great!

Especially with the announcement of Wario Ware for Game Cube!

I could not be happier as a Gamecube owner .

Finally! Nintendo is bringing some of the GBA's "heat" to the GC.

Advance Wars and Golden Sun will follow hopefully someday!

If Nintendo is hell bent on getting some of their Gameboy Fans to adopt a GC, this is how!

Not simply through connectivity.

Of course connectivity for GC versions of Nintendo's more popular GBA titles wouldn't be such a bad idea, and very likely few players would complain about using the GBA's limited button layout as a method of control.

Cool beans!

I believe Nintendo felt that they "had" good insight.

but it certainly hasn't carried them as close to the top as they wanted.

Sony is in the hearts of gamers right now and seeing as there is no end to their reign, it will most certainly carry over.

I think nostalgia aided the purchases of Gamecubes in 2001, but what really fueled it was the death of one console via an "electronics giant" and the entry of another "venture capitalist," who everyone thought would, "Rule them all," (eventually).

Then things got passionate and exciting, everyone was talking and thinking about video games. Plus you had Nintendo seemingly learning from it's mistakes with the N64, (with CD's as the new Storage medium) the original Spaceworld 2000 Zelda demo, and the new ads for the two Zelda Gameboy Color games fueling the fire.

(I mean "Geeze," in the Spaceworld demo you had Link is throwing away his shield while facing off against Gannondorf.  In the ads he's tossing off his cape and slamming scepters to the ground and reconstructing swords through his will and magic powers.)

With that fresh in our mind, (I remember it as clear as day, they ran those Gameboy Color Zelda ads at the same time the Space world 2000 demo was new,) people are hyped to see what Nintendo has done with its new Legend of Zelda. (I eventually got over it), but honestly on first sight, that morning I watched the picture appear on my screen, and he's two inches tall!

This was not the Link Nintendo had been advertising for that past month. I'm certain that killed a lot of "would be" fans right there.

Timing is everything.

Wind Waker has heart, it's great and it has an at times a funny story but, this was not the way to win anyone's heart. Not the hearts of the gamers who were excited for a Nintendo save us from the "venture capitalist," who spelled doom and lame games for all eventually crushing the gaming biz and then moving on to the next territory.

It was a big mistake. I really don't think Nintendo will ever have that kind of "momentum" behind them again.

It's over and it's sad.

You sold Zelda to the wrong people, you sold it to the kids.

That's the first and last time I'll ever say that.

It's just a very frustrating truth.

I'm just hoping that they will make some serious adjustments to the way they do things for the next round of consoles, but knowing them…

"Outlook not so good."

Yeah, I also agree that the graphics have been mostly evolutionary.
I think it's a shame, a real big shame that most "EAD games" Nintendo games never seem to push the hardware.

Third parties are great but it will always be a Nintendo game that should sell a system.

A lot of people didn't pay 200+ to see" flat" Cel-Shaded graphic on their favorite character. They wanted something to swagger on about in front of their X-Box and PS2, (Dead or Alive 3, and Devil May Cry) buddies.

I'm not perfectly sure also if "kids" actually do enjoy Gamecube. I live in Manhattan and meeting kids in the NYC Pokemon Center I find a lot of them not actually play or own Gamecube, also like my brother always says. He's not a basketball fan, he's a Michael Jordan fan.

Most kids will only get involved with Nintendo's Pokemon but not their machine.

On the flip side being a gamer and observing in the same store and others, many teenage gamers actually play the Gamecube kiosks available.

I still think the kind of gamer that buys most of these consoles and gets involved with video games are mostly teenagers.

Not kids, but people who "spend money" on them.

I've heard this before and I don't mind reiterating this.

Kids only like Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh!

I'm gotta get this off my chest, up until now all of these kind of games and their styles and who they are meant to appeal to were complete misfires. Guided by greed to obtain a market they thought they could milk. Trying to exploit children while discouraging "would be" Nintendo fans.

It didn't work.

It wouldn't kill Nintendo to appeal to folk who are sophisticated enough to enjoy more than one or two fad games.

That simply does not translate cynically into "shooting hookers." Oye!

I really don't see how being the first to market could help Nintendo gain a lead in the next generation of home consoles.

Sega was the first to market with both the Genesis (16-bit era) and the Dreamcast (128-bit era). I don't remember but I think they were first to market also with the Saturn (32-bit era).

It could be another Dreamcast scenario.

There is nothing wrong with going second, which is what Sony, did with the pS2. (How were they first to market in the 128-bit console age?) Even Nintedno went second with the Super Nes opposing the Genesis.

I really don't see how it could work for Nintendo hardware-wise (giving the opposition time to build a machine with better capabilities) and even in selling units.

People they might just say again, "Let's just wait for PS3."

This sort of "short memory" Nintendo seems to be having lately is worrying me a bit.

I hope they make consoles for years to come, but they have to make games more appealing to a wider audience that's the only real way to get ahead. Zelda WW was great but it was bad timing to change Link the way they did, and there are other things, like lots of niche' games like Animal crossing.

You need to wow the public. Not a lot of people are in love with Nintendo like they used to be. Or at least the way they remember it. Sometimes you gotta' grow up with your audience if you want to keep them.

Going first won't change anything for Nintendo, you can't educate the masses in quality gaming, at least not until you have their attention.

General Chat / Check out Penny Arcade (5-23-03)!

I know it's a day late, but I think they make a very important point that must be addressed on the front page about Gaming Journalism. starting afew ways down with the title "LIAR" by Gabe.

http://www.penny-arcade.com

(just in case you don't know how the get there, and if you if you missed it the title comic is called

"The Buddy System."

Which perfectly reinforces the matter. Of being mismatched for duties.

The gist is that no one truly takes video games seriously and we are and always have been at the mercy of jokers who spout out "hackneyed catch phrases," and call that gaming journalism.

I knew EGM was making fun of gamers when they called Silent Hill 3 a "Terror Horror" game.

(Just check out EGM issue 165 (April 2003) with the review of the Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker. It has Link featured on the cover, page 64. Look under "genre:")

Over all Gabe takes apart a review of a game from Gamers.com and exposes facts that went unsaid (and clearly unplayed).

After reading what Gabe said continue down for the rest and it should all come full circle.

Then read the comic. (I also think that it is relative to all that talk about "educating gamers from the folks at this web site)

The same review of the game can be found in the latest EGM as well with Rebel Strike on the cover, page 113 beside the big Saiyuki anime ad.

I think it's an important read.

Check it out.

Nintendo Gaming / games you don't play anymore.
« on: May 12, 2003, 07:52:29 AM »
I yern to own as many games as possible yet I always sell something.

It takes a while though before I trade in a game.

I mostly trade import games though because you can't rent them to see if you like them first. So I go by reviews, but I'm very optimistic too, so a 7 wouldn't discourage a purchase knowing full well there are games with better scores out there.

In the past though after playing a some of those better games I was left wondering how such a game could ever get such a high score. Resident Evil (remake) and Animal Crossing.

AC: is basically a gambling game, meaning the whole game is centered around chance which is addictive to some but painfully boring to me. I haven't sold AC yet though because my brother likes it, so it is basically played with him. But don't leave me alone with those animals, and pulling up weeds for superficial unappreciative creatures is not something I want to develope an unhealthy attatchment to.

I do like the graphics though.

(really.)

RE: I'm sorry but I had already played "Alone in the Dark" and when the dog jumped through the window in that game I got me scared. Still in the end RE got the credit and still does: See Egm's Greatest Gaming Moments in the Halo 2 (cover) issue November 2002 page 254.

Plus the fact that it was a total rip off of AitD, which everyone seemed to forget left me cold.

That and it's sluggish movement and pace (the control being lifted from the PS1 title. Capcom didn't even include analogue control for it or RE Zero.) and that it was not really scarey anymore (if ever) put it below my other titles.

I bought it shamefully for the GC only because at the time I had no visually arresting games, or any since SSBM and Rougue Leader, as well as before Eternal Darkness and Metroid Prime.

Other games I sold are imports Like P.N.0, but that's import so I can't talk about it here.

Besides those titles Luigi's mansion and Pikmin still get played. Rougue Leader and Smash Brothers mostly though. Metroid Prime is loved but I've unlocked mostly everything and Eternal darkness I finished long ago.

as for non Nintendo related titles I have the Sims (new!) and Tony Hawk 4 these games get as much play as SSBM, and I'm looking for more titles like Splinter Cell (I rented this game, and it may be the next game I buy), and Nightfire which I plan on picking up soon.

Nintendo Gaming / Gameboy Player

AAEEIII!! I love my (import) Game Boy Player!

It lets me see my Gameboy games on the television.

I haven't translated the menus or instructions, but the options seem to be very simple.

Anyway.. Ever since I bought the Game Boy Player a little more than a week ago, I haven't popped in a single GC disc (minus the GBP boot disk).

It has reinvigorated my interest in GB games and inspired me to expand on my collection starting with Sonic Advance 2.

I sure do love Cream 'n' Tails...

Next comes, Castleviania, oh hell yes.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but this is just another point I'd like to make:

Instead of flooding their system with online games it's very likely that Nintendo would try to offer unique content, something only they can provide. Something like Pokemon or Animal Crossing (if either were to be online).

Not just tossing out a pretty basic racer and dressing it up for online, while people can find games like this with more invloving content and more interesting options, not only on other systems but on the PC.

I'm also very happy like another poster on this thread that MK will not be online. It would ruin the simplicity of just playing a game.

Do I want to share all of my experience with the world?

Would I have to to fully enjoy it?

A game being online does not make it better, nor does a game that has had multiplayer in the past need to be online today.

Mario Kart is simply race. It's a simple experience.

A true online game is a game like Pokemon were one would get their moneys worth off a subscription.
(Leveling up Pokemon to suprise online oponents with well thought out battle strategies and thousands of options for online players just from the pokemon and their abilities alone.)

And of course no other current system can link like this: GBA-->GC-->Online

Online and extras to keeps players busy would dilute the whole Mario Kart experience.
(I heard some folks in the past asking for custom Karts and such) I'm almost certain those folk are truly asking for a different racing title entirely.

Mario Kart online would not have the same impact as it would as a personal experience.

Thank goodness. Save it for another racing game a GT or Apex clone perhaps.

(also I read:

http://www.the-magicbox.com/game030203.htm

that the English translation is already done for MK. I just want to say "Thank you Nintendo!" Since I've complained about lateness in their releases in the past).

Cool! There is a slight difference between the US and Japanese versions of Zelda (after checking the spoilers).

This not only warrents the long wait, it makes it feel a bit more unique now to own an import version of game.

Ugh!! I'm definately one of those peolpe who hate Mario Party. A very slow board game, it couldn't hold me or any one of my sib's interest long enough to earn the mini games.

I've been looking forward to the new Mario Kart though ever since I downloaded the short and unrevealing demo clip of the game.

All I want is Mario Kart in full 3D and that's what I'll be getting.

Amen!

"I would not be surprised this analysis was sponsered by Microsoft in some way."

I agree with you. It's all advertising in some way. It's just more of MS tossing around cash.

Buying Penny-Arcade, and perfect review scores for Halo.

It's just more of the same.

Nintendo Gaming / favorite Zelda game quotes, anyone?
« on: February 21, 2003, 02:15:24 PM »
"Grumble, grumble"

First uttered by a hungry Moblin in a cave in the Original Zelda, and then once by the "Great Mido" (from OoT), angry that the Deku Tree wants an audience with Link instead of with him.

On top of that Saria is much friendlier with Link than with Mido, this also pisses him off.

"BURNED!"

Nintendo Gaming / Zelda game after windwaker
« on: February 15, 2003, 06:14:46 AM »
Wow, the idea of a "Techno Hyrule" also crossed my mind a while back....

It all seemed too desperate (lasers, cyber cars, neon lights, robots and such, smog, buildings that are too tall,) sounds like a different game all together.

Though then again coming from the right hands it could be a real kick.

...but it would most likely take away from the simplicity found in nearly ("MM") all  Zelda games. That kind of simple nature that never "distracted" us from the fun.

This is a game I can't wait for.

Hopefully Nintendo will not be so shy as to avoid showing this game at this years E-3.

I'm still hoping for it to be just "Mario" Kart though,
It wouldn't be the same (IMO) with Kirby, Link or Sonic.

I'm just not ready for that.
