TalkBack / Re: PODCAST: Radio Free Nintendo: Episode 112

Forgive me if I'm less than eager to accept your judgement on what is and isn't worth downloading.  ;-)

Well, if you can ignore the laughably bad characters and the voice work, the actual pool game is very good.  The graphics are clean (albeit nothing to write home about), it plays very well and gives you freedom on making your shots.  So it was worth $8 for me anyway.  It's a solid pool game, nothing more.

I love how many times you guys refer to editing stuff out, in the final post edited version. =P

Part of the reason why I love this podcast and this crew, is PRECISELY because of all the tangents and the lack of editing of stuff that James says he's going to edit.  It plays less like a prepared and sterilized show and more like a casual conversation between gamers.  Great to listen to at work and on long drives (#103 has a permanent place on my mp3 player).

I don't know where this perception came from that E3 is targeted only at the mainstream press.  It's targeted at the gaming world, period, which means all gamers and gaming press alike.

It's funny, Sony and Microsoft didn't have any trouble accomodating both casual and traditional games in their presentations.  Obviously their focus is more on traditional gamers, sure, but they made an effort to reach out to both.

The closest thing I've ever seen to the mainstream press covering E3 was usually business news channels and brief mentions in general news websites- nothing deep mind you, just a news blurb, that's all.

Uhhhh....  *orders my Oompa Loompas to work faster*  Um, it's a perk that comes with being a Prime.  Long story, don't ask...

A bunch of whiny brats that gave them the $$$ to create The Wii in first place.    8)

EXACTLY.  I've given Nintendo hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for their product.  In return, they give me games that I'm not remotely interested in.  I'm not happy with that.  That's not whining, that's customer displeasure.  If you ordered a steak well-done and got it rare and bloody, would you consider somebody that returned the steak to the chef a "whiny little brat"?  Gimme a break.

That's why I feel so used from Nintendo.  It's possible (probable) they couldn't have gotten this crazy success story that is the Wii WITHOUT the core, early adopters buying it for what we usually buy Nintendo systems for.  I'm glad they're back to the top of the heap, but for crying out loud give us a reason to continue out brand loyalty!  The rest of this year will have a lot of us core gamers looking at the other systems more than usual.

If we look at the Wii thus far we have a fairly solid collection of titles from Nintendo all geared to satiate the Nintendo "hardcore" crowd. We have seen Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Smash Bros, Battalion Wars, Fire Emblem, Mario Kart, Paper Mario, and Wario Ware on the Wii already. We also know that Nintendo is working on Disaster, Wario Land, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, a new Mario and a new Zelda.

Note that of the 15 titles you list in this paragraph, only ONE of them is a new IP (and it also happens to be the one that's most likely to be utterly mediocre).  Like D_Average said, if you think that Nintendo is going to suddenly do a 180 and release a ton of new IPs aimed at gaming purists, you're kidding yourself.  They've tilted the playing field up towards casual gamers, slowly causing traditional gamers to slide off to the 360 and PS3.

and if I remember correctly, Animal Crossing was one of their earliest tries at casual gaming, so to insinuate that it's a hardcore game (I'm looking at you Reggie), is nothing more than pandering...

I'll certainly get flamed for this, but I'll say it anyways: I no longer consider the Wii a "gamer's console" because as time goes on, there are less and less "gamer's games" for it.  Those types of games have become the exception, not the rule.  Flame away, but that's the way I see it, and Nintendo is doing nothing to convince me otherwise.  It's like they've said, "OK, make Wii sequels to all of the franchises that our hardcore fans expect, and that should shut them up."  I feel like Nintendo releases games like the ones you've listed only out of obligation, not because they really want to.  It's like they try to keep up this facade of wanting to appease traditional gamers when they could really care less.  It's pretty patronizing, actually.

If you're gonna get flamed for this, then I'll be the first to give you cover.  I pretty much second every word you said.  Hopefully there will be something more than "our Mario and Zelda teams are working on new stuff" later on in the year. Good to know Miyamoto and Co. are earning their keep at NCL, guys.

Interesting to note that a lot of us Nintendo fans put up with quite a lot of crap from them and their decisions through the N64 and GC years only to keep coming back hoping they'd do SOMETHING right to get them back into the game.  Now, it seems the new found success from the decision they GOT RIGHT, may result in the final straw for a lot of Nintendo fans.

If it IS simply a case of putting on a "casual gamers only" show for E3, then hopefully, the powers that be at Nintendo are aware of the internet uproar and disappointment of their presentation and will at least refine said presentation.  An awkward admission of a new Pikmin being made at the 11th hour. WTF?!

Silks, what size kevlar do you wear?

TalkBack / Re: Gradius Rebirth Coming to WiiWare
« on: July 19, 2008, 06:23:37 PM »
Although lets be true here.  We're ALL huge Gradius fans and as far as I know, there hasn't been a horribly bad game in the series.  Granted, there hasn't exactly been a whole lot of change to the formula since day 1, and it would probably take more work to make a bad Gradius game than it would a good one (and everybody thinks Zelda is formulaic!).

It's Gradius. A NEW Gradius.  At least that's the impression I get - doesn't make any sense to rehash an older version for WiiWare.  That's what the VC is for.

Best case scenario: Treasure develops it and it rocks.

Worst case:  It's STILL a Gradius game. 'Nuff said.

(you'd think by now SOMEONE would get a clue and load the Vic Viper with Antibiotic based weapons.  They're called "Bacterions" for crying out loud!)

Sweet. New levels to Speed Up and "SHOOT THE CORE" in. Well, hopefully it will be new levels. It'll probably not, but I wonder if Treasure has some input in this.

Wouldn't IT be nice if this is one of the games Treasure is working on?  Definitely a Day 1 purchase for me...

What a strange unexpected turn the Wii has taken, though:  The core gamers are getting all NEW versions of some classic franchises. Who saw this coming when the Wii's lifespan started?  For some reason, this reminds me of the scene from Back to the Future 2 when Marty is in the future diner and plays an old 80s arcade game (Hogan's Alley, I think) to show off his skills to a bunch of kids but they get annoyed because you have to HOLD the gun to play.  Although in this case you could alter the reaction to:

"You mean you push a button to jump?  There's no waggle? That's ANCIENT!"

Ancient... Moai statues... Gradius...  mmmm...

There were many self-congratulatory charts.

Well, we DID want Nintendo to come back to prominence after the 'Cube performance.  What's the phrase: " Be careful what you wish for"?

I guess I chose right when I decided to stay in bed at 2am rather than tune in to your bizarro-time conference.

Ironically enough, this was my first time watching Nintendo's presentation live.  Yawn.
At least they announced a new Gradius for the VC.  That has me excited, and I imagine it's going to take a few days to pry Greg Leahy from the ceiling after he read that bit of news.

I think this weeks's Penny Arcade sums it up NICELY.

Welcome to the boards OzPrime. I get a feeling you'll fit in just fine.  8)

Thanks.  I'll do my best to maintain the high level of insanity here, although Mr. Jones makes it a hard act to follow in that regard (and YES, I DID immediately think of you and your "experiences" with Pokemon when Reggie mentioned it... and your probable groan of WTF-ness)

*Goes off to find the Matrix of Basketweaving until Nintendo remembers us again...*

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought the E3 Presentation was practically a blowing off of the hardcore gamers.

I was thinking about how things have progressed since the Wii launch and something very disturbing hit me.  Does anybody else get the distinct feeling that we (the non-casual gamers) were merely the instrument to get the Wii snowball rolling.

It explains why Nintendo made a point of getting all their big franchises out so soon in the console's lifespan (VERY uncharacteristic of Nintendo) instead of staggering them out.  All of the dedicated Nintendo fanatics buy up all the initial Wiis because of the Marios, Zeldas, Smash Bros, and so forth.  Then we "spead the gospel" of the Wii to our friends and families and so forth until the casual gamers become the dominant force in the console's lifespan.  We then are pushed aside and thrown the occasional bone to placate us ("Look, here's Grand Theft Auto... on the DS!  We're watching out for you crazy otakus out there!").

Maybe I'm overreacting but that's the feeling I got after N's E3 presentation.  I almost feel used in a strange way (uh, to clarify... not "used in a strange way"  I'll leave that for the Sonic fans/Sega relationship).

Oh, and the WiiMotion Plus?  Uh, wasn't that what we were SUPPOSED to get when we bought the damn consoles in the first place?!  Great.  They've learned how to adapt their handheld strategy- i.e. release a handheld with a glaring omission only to add it later on.

Ironic note: Nintendo made a huge point of stating that the Wii was no bigger than 3 DVD cases in size to keep it small and unobtrusive.  Yet they release so many damn add-ons ("Now with WiiSpeak and WiiMotion plus!"), that the overall size of everything probably is more than a 360 or PS3 by this point!

RFN 106 was fantastic, by the way, guys.  Whatever it is you do, keep doing it.
