Using a PC everyday is slightly different than playing a disc based console every day.  95% of the time using your computer, the disc drive sits idle (assuming most people just do internet stuff).  However, while playing video games, the drive is hardly ever idle.  Now, take this into consideration, a regular cd-rom drive might last forever, but in general, cd-writers last only 12-18 months.  now, this isn't saying that i've bought low-end drives that crapped out, but cd-writers generate more ( read A LOT MORE ) heat than a regular cd-rom drive, and generally don't last more than 2 years.  as a PC technician, i would guess that about 75% of the cd-writers that we replace are between 12 and 18 months old.  i would guess that the heat generated by a cd-writer is more comparable to the longer use of a console system.  so, 2 years sounds pretty dam good for an average lifespan.  so, sorry to shoot that idea in the foot, but the use of a computer cd-rom drive and a disc based console is vastly too different to compare in such a general sense.

Hey Ty.  Would it be possible for titles to be part of someone's profile?  It doesn't seem like it should be that big of a problem to get integrated.  or are there other issues at hand?

just be gentle with the q-tip.  it doesn't take much to take dust off a lens...

i've got a question that i hope someone can answer.  how is this game played out?  is it like animal crossing in real time?  or each time you go back to play, is it right where you left off?  that was one of the only things i didn't like about animal crossing.  you have to play it almost every day.  of course it's a great excuse to play some video game every day then.  i kinda have the same question for the GC HM that's coming out.  will it be real time?  or just play as you go?  i think that's going to be my determining factor in buying either one of them. thanx

that was my comment.  i can't say it will work for a gamecube for sure, but it's what we do at work for anything with a laser lens.

it's a long shot, since you already turned it on.  (bad idea by the way.  should've left it dry for a couple days at least.  if not a week)  if you have a self-defrosting freezer, wrap up the gamecube in wax paper or something, and throw it in there for a week.  great little trick with electronics.  as the freezer does it's "self-defrosting"  it takes moisture out of the freezer.  probably your best shot.

hey manunited4eva22.  what software do you use for your virtual drive?  i haven't found anything that seems to work very well.   i did try using iso buster to grab the information out of the image, then re-burning that information, but doing that, i lost the security layer of my the images, and then couldn't play the game from them.

well anyway, thanx everybody.

PS i partially agree with KDR.  Nero Express that comes free with stuff is a steaming pile of crap.  but if you've ever used the real software suite, it's pretty good.  lately, i've taken a liking to CD-Mate.  it has copy protection stuff built in.  it's great.

quick question for a fellow computer geek.  i'm trying to make back-ups of some of my computer games.  i've managed to rip the disc images, and burn working copies, but i would like to be able to add the patches/updates right onto the discs.  does anyone know of some software that can view and modify a cd image?

and before this turns into a flame session of people telling me that copying games is illegal, i do a lot of traveling to LAN parties and really don't like taking all of my original discs along.  it's bad enough when people try to take my custom ethernet equipment, that's cheap.  but to drop $60-$70 on a game and expansion just to have someone walk off with it?  i don't relish the thought.

thanx anyone that can help

if you're going to connect the GCube directly to the computer, you'll need a crossover cable.  beyond that, i haven't tried to use warppipe.  good luck.

wet a q-tip with equal parts water and windex.  then simply wipe off the lens with the moistened q-tip and allow to dry.  should take more than 30 seconds with a cube, since you just open the cover, and there is the lens!

the only problem with the sound in MM is that when you go to a new area in the game ( ex: different parts of town. ) there is a very short pause in the background music.  fine with me.

actually, it was more of a 'there aren't enough progressive scan games' and that they thought it was more of a kiddie market.

hmmm...  here's the story.  I work at a Best Buy and got a chance to speak with a representative from monster a couple months ago....
Monster acually had a working prototype ready for production.  But after marketing research, they didn't think there was enough of a market to manufacture it.  They didn't feel the markets of the serious video/audiophile merged well enough with the market that the gamecube was modeled to.

i use Norton Internet Security, and haven't seen a pop-up ad since i started using it.  occassionally i still see the black ad before it goes to the PGC site, but it usually only lasts a second becasue NIS blocks the ad from loading on that page.  all i see is the white writing.

it's essentially the same process with an XP boot disc, but you don't use fdisk.  you just boot like you're going to install, but before you tell it where to install, delete all the old partitions and create new ones.  it's pretty straight-forward.  good luck.
