Movies & TV / Re: Rate the last TV show you've seen
« on: March 25, 2015, 11:58:19 AM »
current episode of Fresh off the Boat, man I am really loving this show everyone should be watching this show needs to last a while.

52
I liked Indy 4, better than Temple of Doom. But not as good as Raiders or Last Crusade.

53
I think they are moving towards a gaming tablet but they are taking baby steps. I think the hybrid will be one of those baby steps.

54
Leather-clad queer bikers with Nazi, Catholic and occult themes dancing to 50s-60's pop and rock and roll songs.

That's not even a spoiler. That's just a description of the movie. You're not the only one to make this mistake but I just felt it was time to point it out. That spoils nothing!

You've seen Birth of a Nation?

I am a film student in film school, what do you think?

That you haven't.

Greed - The man/husband kills his wife's cousin who was trying to kill him for killing his wife only to realize he's been handcuffed to the dead cousin and dies from thirst in the desert from dragging the body. That's a spoiler. And I feel bad for doing it because Greed is a really great movie but I doubt any of you people here are going to watch a 1924 black and white silent movie with missing film footage so whatever.

I have seen dozens of movies that fit that description, many of the Edison films, Metropolis, Nosferatu, Le Voyage dans la Lune, too many to list but those are the main ones. As a film student I have watched most of the early films that are considered prominent and that includes Birth of a Nation as well as several Chaplin and lots of really cool German films that were made during WW2 but are considered "taboo" today.

General Gaming / Re: Biggest wastes of money video game-wise for you?

Waste of money, sure I used to be a die hard SEGA fan, just about everything those fools made was a waste of damn money. I had a Saturn, Sega CD, and a 32X, there is your waste of money. Except the Genesis one of the greatest game consoles ever made.

56
it's a tie because the master says it's a tie and there is no arguing with the master.

I wrote a paper about this for one of my English classes about how MEMES spread before the internet and used Techno Syndrome by the Immortals as the basis of the paper. I am pretty sure I have a copy of it somewhere if anyone is interested in seeing proof that I could get an A in an English class.

Okay, I dug it out, not a terrible paper, did get me an A but it was English 101 so not really shocked there. Anyways I thought I talked more about music but it turns out I barely mention a couple of songs. I will still post the text if anyone is interested in it.

General Chat / Re: What are your 10 favorite songs from the 90's?
« on: March 25, 2015, 01:15:51 AM »
I intentionally left of the Spice Girls because as much as I did enjoy their music they were late in the decade and I just think I listen to other music more. I also left of Maria Carey because she transcends the decade, whereas most of the stuff I listed defines the 90's.

General Gaming / Re: A Dilemma Regarding Video Games...
« on: March 25, 2015, 01:04:38 AM »
To be completely honest, aside from occasionally trying a new game here and there, I still find myself replaying the same ten or so games over and over. I replay Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda NES, Bust A Move Neo Geo, Sonic 2 Genesis, TMNT Arcade, Altered Beast Genesis, Turrican Genesis, Super Mario 64, Tetris Game Boy, Dr. Mario NES, Sim City SNES, Mega Man X SNES, Donkey Kong Country SNES, Super Mario RPG, and Zelda 2 NES annually. Some of those games I pretty much play every chance I get especially Super Mario World, I replay that game probably several times a year. I used to replay Kirby Super Star, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter games constantly too but lately I have mostly lost interest in those. I played AVGN Adventures non stop when it was new, beat it twice on two different difficulties then lost interest. I try new games and I found quite a few I would like to finish but these are the main games I replay over and over.

Final Fantasy 7 I replay every couple of years, not too often as I don't want it to get stale. I also have started Dragon Warrior NES and Final Fantasy 6 several dozen times, and I never finish either one.

I am just going to be totally honest here see how it goes.

My 10 favorite songs from the 90's also happen to be near the top of my favorites of all time list.

I will not rank these in any particular order just list them for your consideration.

Cardigans- "Love Fool"
Chumbawumba- "Tubthumping" (the song that prompted this discussion ;) )
Smash Mouth- "Walking on the Sun"
Britney Spears- "Baby, One More Time"
Deep Blue Something- "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
Garbage- "I Think I'm Paranoid"
The Proclaimers- "I Gonna Be 500 Miles"
Dead Eye Dick- "New Age Girl"
Beck- "New Pollution"
Marylin Manson- "The Beautiful People"

That should get the topic going more.

Haddaway- "What is Love" is one of my all time favorite songs but its more a dance song to me when I remember the 90's I tend to put the dance music into a separate category so for good measure my 10 favorite 90's dance songs too.

Haddaway- "What is Love"
Ace of Base- "My Mind"
C+C Music Factory- "Gonna Make You Sweat"
Tha Immortals- "Techno Syndrome- Mortal Kombat Theme"
Marky Mark- "Good Vibrations"
La Bouche- "Be My Lover"
Gina G- "ooh ah, Just a Little Bit"
Los Del Rio- "Macarena- Bay Side Boys Mix"
Rednex- "Cotton Eyed Joe"
2Unlimited- ~everything just pick one they are all the same~

Aren't they all overrated anyways. Mega Man is superior in every way.

And Mario's easily better than F-Zero.

Holy crap did we just agree on something? Oh wait this is the funhouse you are joking right, damn so close.

This is why read the comments, we are Nintendo gamers not typical console gamers. Everyone one says the same thing they don't typically play online and if they do voice chat is a nuisance to them not something special. Nintendo is not Sony or MS so stop comparing them, sure do it when it is lame like this but when talking about graphics or something suddenly Nintendo is doing their own thing.

Whatever Nintendo does not have the same market the other guys do, this is NOT a Call of Duty game that would appeal to that crowd, if it were most of us would shrug it off as not worth playing. We collectively as a Nintendo audience tend to dislike those games and the ones who do like those games buy the other console anyways. Nintendo is not the only one with voice built in, PS4 comes bundled with a mini headset.

Unlike Smash and Mario Kart where there is already a precedent and an established mindset going in this a brand new territory for Nintendo they have to tread lightly because they would hate for a kid-friendly game like this to taint their image because Johnny was listening to two teenagers talk about the slut they banged last night (each others mother is how it usually goes if I recall) and Johnny is asking questions mommy and daddy were not ready for at such a tender age.

Saying let voice chat exist among friends only is still asking for trouble, many of us DO add friends we meet here or elsewhere that actually are underage and they might want to enter a match with one of us and who knows one of the other guys has a potty mouth they can't turn off again this is Nintendo being overly cautious. Mario Kart DS their first online venture didn't have voice anything it took them years od badgering and sequels to start to make progress and that was because they followed the audience close. This is uncharted territory for them, its a shooter game the other two are fairly harmless in comparison. Hell the fact its paintball as their first real online multiplayer shooter tells you how much they are protective of their family friendly image.

If you are getting burned out take a break or change things up. If you only want to cover retro stuff then do that. Nobody is going to hate you for doing another retro thing. I would love to get in on your podcast if you are looking for a new voice to share ideas with. I keep trying to get my own podcast going but things keep getting in the way. I would prefer to talk about more than video games, maybe movies too, even technology from time to time.

I want to ask how old you are first, which you don't have to answer obviously. I just ask because when I was in my mid-20's I went through a period where I lost interest in video games entirely too. I know others my age who had a similar loss of interest at around the same time too. For me it was smack in the middle of Wii generation and it hit me suddenly and out of the blue. I actually was loving the Wii and DS tremendously. I was having tons of fun with them. Then all of a sudden other things became more important. After a while my dissatisfaction with the way things were going turned into downright disgust so I walked away. I traded my DS into Game Stop and sold my Wii to a random couple on Craigslist.

I spent a few years catching up on movies and TV shows that I missed. For me motion pictures are a far more interesting medium than interactive games these days. But once I had seen all the movies and shows I missed I was having a hunger to get back into games. I kept gaming all along mostly retro gaming via emulators. I picked up a used Game Cube at a yard sale and grabbed some games and I loved it I really did. I didn't have the time to play ever so I just gave it all to a thrift store one day.

Now I am older, I have a better job, I am back in college, and life in general is much better. I have found a desire to play video games again. I would say that I am really hooked on retro games still, mostly old school games and new games that remind me of retro games. I enjoyed AVGN Adventures, Shovel Knight, Super Mario 3D World, and currently am really into Elliot's Quest. Plus I got bit by the Minecraft bug they, sadly, have yet to find a cure for.

Look at the pattern, consoles come out every five years, Wii U will be close to that when this thing launches. Nintendo has SIX Consoles and only 4 hand helds if you are not counting the half steps as you are calling them. 3DS is not performing to expectations but is still doing well, New 3DS just launched it can sit on the market for two years easily. Wii U is pretty much a dud they need to abandon first chance. It makes more sense to replace the failing console and hope that by stating over there they might have a chance to regain a footing and leave the successful hand held alone then it does to sacrifice what good the handheld is to let the console flounder.

Even if NX is the handheld, fine then discuss it from that angle. I don't care but arguing over if it is console or handheld is not productive
.

General-3 / Why haven't we made Britain a state yet?
« on: March 24, 2015, 01:12:16 AM »
I get why we don't want Canada in our perfect union, yuck who would even the UK was happy to let them go without a fuss. But we should be pressuring the British to apply for Statehood. I want to be able to take Doctor Who away from the Brits and give it over to an American network so they can fix it like they did Torchwood just make sure it has lots of boobs and explosions and it will be so much better than that lousy English crap that actually tries to get you to think, who wants that TV isn't supposed to make you think why else would they call it the idiot box damn brits get with the friggin program.

Also if we made Britain a State we could put the Queen on Mount Rushmore, finally work together to end the spread of that disease they call "soccer", and while we are at it we can fix their broken roads and teach them how to use the English system of measuring they friggin invented and get them off that damn overly complicated worthless metric system once and for all.

We need to elect a President who wants to make annexing Great Britain as the 51st and 52nd States of the Union, England and Scotland will be one State and Ireland will be the other, nobody wants Whales so it can stay all alone over there.

71
right but it launched this year, the NX is getting announced next year there is no way they replace New 3DS that fast. Wii U they can.

72
well it didn't work I have seen all these movies.

73
Evan is right on here, this isn't a tactical game where you have to coordinate your bullets its friggin paintball your side is blue, enemy is pink, you shoot blue paint at the pink **** end of story.

General Gaming / Re: "THE" Game- One for each genre.
« on: March 24, 2015, 12:45:07 AM »
I have written similar posts like this on my now dead blog. I love these kinds of challenges.

2D Platformers
If you want to sell someone on 2D platformers, I always pick Super Mario World. It has delightful character design, colorful levels, mostly happy music, the level design is great for beginners and just challenging enough for veterans. The new mechanics it introduces have a long lasting effect on platformers as a whole not just Mario games. I also like how it is the first to use a save feature that is not tied to specific save points but does require you to actually earn your save by completing a specific type of level. The music in this game is the best of the genre too, the only Mario game where I think the music is actually good enough to just sit and listen to for no reason other than to put a smile on your face.

3D Platformers

Normally I would say it is a toss up between Super Mario 64 on N64, and original Crash Bandicoot on Playstation. I like Mario 64 because it basically creates the template for 3D platformers and is a lot of fun. I dislike the game because honestly once you unlock the upper level you realize how short, and limiting in scope the game really is. It is a great pick up and play game to initiate a gamer into 3D controls as well. The reason I would suggest Crash Bandicoot instead would be because it is a good blend of 2D and 3D and it gets both right. The 3D is not quite as open ended as Mario 64 but it still works really well for what it is plus it has the benefit of not rehashing the same levels over and over. The challenges are quite fun and the game is remeniscent of DKC on SNES, but it feels like a proper evolution of that game more so than DK 64 even did.

2D fighting games

For someone new to fighting games but looking to get a real experience I would recommend Samurai Showdown for Neo Geo because it has all the elements of a good 2D fighter but it is simple enough for a beginner and advanced enough to lead into the superior games down the road. Otherwise I would probably suggest Marvel vs. Capcom as a good entry point for someone looking to jump right into a fully fleshed out fighting game. Anything newer than that is going to be too complicated for a beginner and I don't think Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter cut it because they are fine games just they rely on unique gimmicks that are not quite as indicative of fighting games as a whole.

3D fighting games

I suggest Tekken 3 as a good entry point. I would also suggest Dragon Ball Z Budokai PS2/GC if they were anime fans but Tekken 3 is a really good starting point for 3D fighting games, that is the point where the genre finally caught up and surpassed 2D fighters, before that 3D fighters were all training wheels for Tekken 3.

Scrolling Shooters (shmups)

Everyone is going to have their own opinion here, but I would suggest starting with Raiden, and go from there. Raiden is more accessible than the more advanced shooters, it has a good assortment of levels and weapons but it isn't too complicated like the more popular games and its got some pretty cool music.

FPS

Quake on PC. Doom is the grandaddy but I think Quake is the game that took multiplayer FPS games to a new level. You could pick anything newer as well but I think Quake is where you need to start.

Puzzle Games

Tetris on Game Boy, the definitive version of Tetris. This game is addicting and will turn anyone from a casual gamer to at least a hard core Tetris nut for a while.

Sim/godlike

A tough one. My personal preference is Sim City for SNES, I play that game way too much. But it is far from accessible and hardly resonates with non-gamers or new gamers. I would then go instead with Civilization for PC instead.

Slasher/hack n slash

Golden Axe for Arcade (or Sega Genesis but realistically that won't fly in todays world)
This is the game I think of when I describe a hack n slash game.

Maze runner
Gauntlet hands down no need to explain.

gaming in general, Pac-Man, EVERY gamer needs to play this game first it is like gaming 101. There is no other video game that transcends gaming it is so universal its not even a contest Pac-man exists on just about every game machine ever made in some form or another.

Racing

Daytona USA arcade. I played this game so much in arcades.  not as much as Pole Position or Super Chase HQ but those games are incredibly dated and primitive at least with Daytona you get a fully fleshed out experience. There are better games but this is the one I think of it is my go to racing game.

RPG

You are going to hate me for this but seriously Final Fantasy 7. That is the game that made RPG gaming cool and mainstream. As a introduction to RPG games I would dig Dragon Warrior on NES that is damn fun but way to hard core for modern gamers or gamers not already familiar with gaming. FF7 is the ONLY RPG game I know of personally people who have played, enjoyed, and beaten it who literally it was their only RPG experience. Every other RPG appeals more to dedicated fans of the genre.

Dungeon Crawler/Adventure quest
Legend of Zelda NES, or Link to the Past. NES is my personal favorite and the one I think really introduces gamers to the game play but Link to the Past is the better game and the one that has connections to the modern games and is more accessible to today's games in that it feels similar to the modern hand held games.

Brawler/beat em up

I can't decide between Battletoads, Streets of Rage, or TMNT Arcade game, they all resonate with me for the genre. Battletoads is more sci-fi and features a variety of game play but so does the Turtles games. Streets of Rages perfected the formula that Final Fight and Double Dragon  began awkwardly. If I had to pick just one, the Sega fan has to hold his lip and go with TMNT.

Button masher/arcade

Ghost N Goblins, this game will frustrate the hell out of you but it really is a great beat the **** out of your controller game.

That is all I can think of at the moment. Not very insightful I am afraid.

75
how can you be so sure it is a hand held, they DID just release a New handheld even if it's not what you were expecting.
