Theaveng, once again it seems like you're a very different kind of gamer from me and those like me.  You play RPG's for Battles and Exploration?  I play for Puzzles and Plot... the other two things are good too, but I normally run away once I get to high enough levels that I don't need any more, and as for exploration, I'd rather do that in a game like Zelda, but I guess it's ok in an RPG too.  But I thought you said you didn't like exploration?

Anyway, I HATE THAT FOREST WATER SIDEQUEST.  It's just... not... fun.  Run around aimlessly, not allowed to take any extra time to do something fun, nooo, you have to sail around trying to find the stupid koroks within 20 minutes... I tried it once, found that I felt making a sidestop on an island (this was key island I think) to do something fun was a way better thing to do than continue with the sidequest, and just waited until the forest water turned back and poured it out.

I like the Triumph Forks map hunt.  It's nice to have something to be looking for when you would just be sailing around to all these islands anyway...

I think that battle-ship game was kinda boring.  Maybe if it had been something thought-provoking, like Minesweeper.... well, I think that the "shoot the fish" was a good diversion.  As was the mail-sorting minigame, although hard (it would have been more fun if they had assigned each box to a button instead of having to use the analog stick to control which box).  And I guess the Orca-fighting could be considered a minigame, and it's fun until you have to spend absurd amounts of time to get to 500.

How do you get to that dungeon on Outset?

Hah... there are three remixes of Kokiri forest in Wind Waker.  One on Outset, one on the outside of Forest Haven, and one on the inside of Forest Haven.

Just music?

Anyway, I like the overworld theme myself... I like just about all the music, cept some of it is too minimalist, and with midi that's hard to pull off.

...?  Don't take that seriously by the way, they're there...

"No need to be jackass about it"

??
I was just saying you probably could have been looking closer, it's not like it's a personal attack.  Look at the map... even without the forest water, it's solidly marked.

The Earth Temple?  A great dungeon?  ...maybe that's something to think about.  I hated something about that level.  I like a little tension and horror now and then, but that level just completed exploited it.  It wasn't really that scary, but every time you go into a new room there's something annoying to threaten Melodi... it wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to switch to control her.

That puzzle at the end was AWESOME!  Unfortunately, it was WAY too easy... it looks complicated, but it's fairly linear.  Are the developers afraid to make us spend time on puzzles anymore?

I thought the ice-boots and power-bracelets thing was cool... I have no complaints with that.  It's more fun if you can get in there, see new sights, fight some battles, get a new item, and then get out so you can do what you really want to do again.  I get the feeling that there are two types of Zelda-players: those that play for the dungeons, and those that play for everything else.  Of course it's not mutually exclusive, and everyone likes most of everything, but there's a distinct difference.  I agree that there probably should have been more big islands, perhaps a couple that took up more than one block, and more than one per block of the small ones... but if that were to happen, I think that would make the map too big, taking too long to get across and taking too much memory.  Maybe in the future, but for now, this size with one island per block, mostly small, is just fine.

Why does dungeon-count even matter?  Oh yeah, I forgot again... some people play for the dungeons.

Any help please?

Go directly north of Tingle's Island... the Great Fairy that'll give you a bigger wallet is there.  There's another one back that you may have noticed WAY at the beginning of the game on Outset, when you're going to get Tetra.  Bomb (if you have them) the big rock.

Has anyone else tried this and can confirm that he does/does not add anything? I've tried re-asking him and all he says is "I've already put them on your chart."

Thanks.

how close were you looking?  See those little leaf marks on some of the squares of the map?  They will be faded unless you currently have forest-water with you, but they mark where the Koroks are.

I like the fairies in Wind Waker a lot more than in Ocarina of Time, or most of the other games.

They're kind-of simple looking... but the simpler they are, the more benevolent they seem.  They just seem like these kind, gentle spirits who help people... you know, nothing fancy, they're just there, unassuming.

About these questions all you people are asking...

Maybe I'm just a genious, but I really think most of these (for example, the ones with the lighting-up the eyes and the watering the bombs) you could solve yourself, leading to much better entertainment.  Both of those stumped me, too, but that led to me trying more different things and thinking more creatively, rather than asking for help.  I recommend asking for help when a problem really starts to hinder you, and you would have more fun if you just get past it because you have already wasted large amounts of playing time; or if you feel that you are missing out on some aspect of the game that you should be enjoying.  But if you can't solve a puzzle... that's the idea.  Puzzle are meant not to be solved easily, and some of these are just too easy to really give your average person any trouble.  I don't mean to seem like I'm trying to force you not to ask for help, or like I am assuming way too much and this is not at all the case, as it may well not be, but still, I think you should be trying a little harder.

But a good example of some questions that, IMO, are worth asking because they will just get in the way of the rest of the game, are the pictographic quests.  It took me a while until I found the guy who said "I wonder if the Rito postman has come yet" and then it clicked.  I was looking at night for someone who was actually WRITING before.  Eventually I got the picture, but then I decided to check some FAQs, and I'm glad I did, because some things aren't worth spending that much time on.  The coward guy is in the coffee-shop... just throw a pot near him or roll into the table and take a picture of him as he's looking around.

Tetra's Stone?

Why does it nearly never say anything to me?  Only a couple times in the forbidden forest, when I was trying to do something like lifting the stone heads before I had the *item* I needed.  It never gave me hints on any bosses or anything...

Oh well.

Please don't say anything about theaveng... that's just stupid.  Maybe it's true, but it's just downright sad to be suspecting people like that.  Sure, he's a regular at some XBox forums, but that doesn't mean he is one of those anti-GC fanboys who are bent on destruction and think it's really funny to act like an as$-hole.  Maybe he just doesn't like Wind Waker?

Personally, I found everything so far completely enthralling.  Well, not everything... the Earth Temple is kind of making me not really too excited about the prospect of getting into the Wind Temple.  And I think that Korok side quest with the 20 minutes thing is really annoying... what do you get for that anyway?  And another thing, I hate it when I open a chest and it's a Treasure Map... I mean, who really cares?!  Yay, 200 rupees... except harder to find.  I still think that in the next Zelda games there should be a large variety of items, like in RPG's... you know, like special bows that cut the magic used in half, spells that cause double damage for a limited amount of time, different kinds of armor, defensive rings, et cetera.  Pretty much everything but the sword... that should stay with the traditional 4 levels.

But other than that, I've just got to say, WOW.  I mean, this incorporates the human aspect of Majora's Mask with the vastness of OoT's world (hey, it felt vast to me) and also provides something 100% fresh.  I think it just takes some imagination... plus, alot of people just expect something to be bad automatically when everyone is hyped about it, and go into it feeling hyped about it, but subconsciously are preparing to be disapointed, whether they actually like it or not.  Still, once again, theaveng may just not like the game.

Theaveng, I still think you should put some more effort into liking this game.  Saying this game is boring is like saying Metroid Prime doesn't have a plot.  You have to find fun where you can, and get involved; otherwise you'll only see the shell, which is a linear game where you sail from one dungeon to the other.  This is, really, just a shell; the dungeons and all that stuff makes up like 10% of the game as a whole (not length-wise, cuz I dont know that, but emphasis-wise) and when combined in that proportion the dungeons really shine, plus all the other stuff is worth it.

Nintendo Gaming / So many secrets! (some spoilers)
« on: March 30, 2003, 09:54:11 AM »
Ok, this post might have some spoilers in it, but I'll try to keep it down, k?

For example.

Magic Armor.  I got that really, REALLY early on... and so far I haven't really needed to use it, as it's way more common to be in need of magic than health, but I think it's really cool that a sidequest like that could pay off with something as cool as that.  And none of the FAQs, that I've seen, even make mention of it.  And then there's the DX Pictobox... and the Hero's Charm (is that supposed to be a grinning mouth, or something less rediculous?).  Then there's all the fairy fountains (I wish there were more; I got all of them pretty much as soon as I could accomodate each one.  Either that or make them harder to find; like in LttP or OoT, they were out of the way, where as in WW they are just there, and it's really easy to recognize their distinctive silhouette as you sail by.)  And then there's the special spin attack, and gaining levels in combat with Orca.

So, this thread is dedicated to the little-known secrets.  I thought there were alot in OoT... but Wind Waker makes that seem almost linear.

Another secret:  just go up one of those towers with the pink guys who you can grapple joy pendants from, steal their pendents, play the song of passing (you don't even need to kill them), steal again, play, steal, play... I hope it works with those Knights Crest guys too.

Is there a prize for 10 more Knights' Crests?  What about getting the maximum number of hits in on Orca? (I'm still stuck on trying to get 500... all it takes is for you just to mess up, no matter how methodical you are the rest of the way).  Any other magic spells like Magic Armor?  (although there are no spaces left ... ).  Any secret moves (I somehow thought there were three... maybe that has to do with getting more Knights' Crests).  What about that Joyous Volunteer Society dealy?

If you've got questions or if you've got answers, then please post.

Sc.... whatever your name is.

It actually looks really good in action.  If you need something to convince you to get it, then, I'll help you with that.

It's addictive.  Its an RPG that just keeps sucking you in... plus, all the special moves are really cool.  And every development in the plot brings something new and interesting with it.  It's very plot-driven, which is a good thing in this context.  ...why don't you rent it?  Then you'll see if you like it or not.  Just don't judge until you get to Valua the first time... it kind of picks up there.

I don't really like that idea bout the "helping out other Links" thing.  Seems a little... I dunno, superficial?  Not that I'm trying to say it was a bad suggestion altogether, just IMO.

I'm glad somebody suggested that futuristic thing.

If it was set in the future, I'd like to see it as a futuristic parallel of the Zelda formula.  Ganondorf is the leader of the powerful crime-syndicate/gang that cooked up th is plan to kidnap the daughter of the president of the most powerful corporation in the solar system.  Zelda is still the girly-girl that she's always been, but there are some very interesting possibilities for some incarnation of Sheik, like in OoT.  It would be cool just to see this whole, detailed world full of corruption, where people have to abide the corporations just to stay alive, either that or join one of the many gangs/crime-syndicates on the different planets.  And Link is only a bit more righteous than the verage degenerate, immoral citizen of that time, but he will soon learn that he's different the hard way.

The whole thing is parallel to the old Zelda games.  I don't mean they have exactly the same everything only futurized, but it's still parallel.  If there's any venue where realistic graphics could be used, it would be in this Zelda game of all Zelda games: the bleak skyscapes and fantastic but rusty technology would be perfect for dark, realistic and shady graphics.  Of course, it wouldn't be ALL depressing, but on the whole I would like it to be a very bleak game.

Im not really too interested in this game.  If the whole thing is focused on getting enough money, well, I don't need another Animal Crossing.  But I'll see how it turns out... not that I can afford much beyond the essentials anyway (Zelda, Pokemon MMORPG, et cetera).

Nice graphical style... not great, but nice.  Really looks cool, but just lacks... well, it lacks... it lacks.  Maybe it looks a little too hollow, too... I have no idea.

Hahaha.... that post-modern Zelda idea is great.

But you've got the specifics all wrong!

See...

The Zelda would just take place in the far future, corrupted corporations and decrepit slums and lasers and spaceships and all, WITHOUT ANY EXPLANATION!  It just opens like any other Zelda game... Link is just there, he's a citizen of that time, just like he's a citizen of whatever time he lives in in the other games.  They aren't all the same Link... and it doesn't have to be "Link is reborn" it's just that this Zelda takes place in the far future.  So, Link is a street-smart rogue of sorts, although he has a more steady lifestyle and a stronger determination and is less vicious and more moral than his peers.  His weapon (everyone in this future carries a weapon, gotta defend yourself in these harsh times!) is a sword, but a really high-tech one.  Thinner than the master/normal Link sword, a little less shiny and a little darker, but still silver in color with cold blue on the sharp edges, with an assymetrical handle of some sort.

And Zelda would be the daugther of the big boss of a very large and extremely powerful corporation, although far less evil and corrupted than most.  Gannondorf would be the young leader of a gang of theives and con-artists... you get the idea .  It should take place over multiple planets (gorons and zoras have their own planets).  Epona would be his trusty fighter-ship...

Basically, mix the classic Zelda gameplay and style and goodness with Skies of Arcadia Legends and Cowboy Bebop !!!!

I for one hope it doesn't get any more action oriented.

Often, having too much action in a game just serves to make you want to stop playing it, frustrate you, and trivialize the whole process.  It can be pretty hard to have fun and enjoy the game when you're trying to fight for your life; of course, this has a place, but I think the action-aspect should stay moderate.

I don't see how you can think the SW00 footage didn't look good, but whatever.  I like both now, although I like cel-shading a little more.  The graphics type, not that it matters that much, that I'd like to see in the next game is cel-shaded.  However, cel-shading that is more dramatic; with more complex shading, and harsher edges and smoother curves and all that.

As for gameplay, I want both linearity and non-linearity.  I like linearity in the sense that you're not just loose to see what you feel like doing, and you can choose what you want to do it doesn't really matter (that's why I stopped playing Chrono Trigger when it became non-linear, as much as I loved the game) and you actually have a strong sense of direction and plot and what's going on.  But I also like there to be many ways to accomplish the same thing; and many different options that will each lead in a definite and planned direction.  So...

I'd also like to see less gimickry in the next Zelda.  There's no reason why the whole game has to be focused on wind, or sailing, or batons... just make it all good, and it'll be good.  I mean, of course there should be more than just running around with the same weapons and adventuring and stuff, but it doesn't all need to be based around the same thing.

Am I the only one that  doesn't have time to care about these new games?  I mean, it may be great and all, but... there's Zelda, Skies of Arcadia, Soul Calibur II, F-Zero.... anyway, I probably will be missing out on F-Zero anyway, so...

Oh well.

Who would want another Goldeneye?  I mean, another, nother, NOTHER Goldeneye.  Just take Perfect Dark, which I've heard was better, and TimeSplitters 2, which I can confirm is better in most ways.  These are both close enough to Goldeneye; but that's IMO.

How about hoping for a genre not already covered well enough?  Adventure is covered; Racing will be covered soon; FPS is covered; RPG is... well, not covered enough, but I'd rather leave most RPG's to Square/Enix and Sega; what about Puzzle?  I think a puzzle game is what's really needed, although that would have no effect on what they're actually making.  You know, a NEW, INNOVATIVE, ADDICTIVE, MIND-BENDING, puzzle game.  Makes you think, but also involves action, and doesn't get tedious, and things vary from match to match.  I probably wouldn't get it anyway, but still, I think we Cubers need a new, effective, puzzle game.

Well...

I don't know about anyone else, but I loved SA2:B.  All of it.  Even the shooting/hunting levels.  It was all good.  Mainly because of the over-all feel of the game; it was just so... fantastic, heartwarming, slick, whatever you want to call it.  Plus most of the music was great, and the gameplay was fun above all.

I'm not sure if I'll be getting SAX though... .  Unless I can trade in SA2:B for it, and/or the Chaos can transfer from one game to the other, and/or it's really cheap, I already have too many games as it is.  I'm probably going to be missing out on F-Zero, although I'm pretty sure I won't be sacraficing SCII.  But SAX is pretty low on the list, with Wind Waker at the top.

Maybe I should just go buy a dreamcast, considering how much I like SA2:B and SoA Legends (in fact, AM liking it, I'm in Yafutoma and it's just getting better!  No, there's no straight crystal-to-crystal treasure-hunting to be found in THIS game!).  Then I would be able to play both SAX and Soul Calibur, not to mention PSO and all that other stuff...

Grand Theft Airship: Vyse City

Ian, I'm surprised you're not liking it more.  You're probably pretty early into it; later on, there'll be less random battles, and there'll be more you can do about them (get Aika's Lambda Blast as soon as possible!)

Remember, up until... well, you'll know it AFFIRMATIVELY when you finish the introduction.  I wouldn't want to say so because it's kind of a spoiler... but its a pretty long introduction.  You'll be way past the point where you have your fourth party member, so, that's not it.

You really do get used to the random battles.  I would have liked non-random better too, but, that's the way it is, and it's really just as good.  Just one piece of advice:  when you hear the word "Delphinus" for the first time, that's your cue to start drooling madly!
