TalkBack / Stanley the Bugman Once Again in Limelight
« on: November 19, 2002, 11:26:06 PM »
Another secret NES game for Animal Crossing owners - this one's a real obscure 'classic'.

Well, it's that time again - Animal Crossing owners are in for a real treat with the revelation of another NES game, Donkey Kong 3.  This rounds out all the Donkey Kong themed games available within the game (the others being Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong Jr. Math).

Donkey Kong 3 is the very strange offshoot of the NES Donkey Kong series - Mario is strangely missing, with you controlling the character Stanley the Bugman (for more information about him, check out his trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee).  Stanley's job is to protect his flowers from bugs, and also our main ape, Donkey Kong.  Using his trusty bug spray (it gets better), Stanley has to squirt insectiside up at Donkey Kong to force him to climb higher and eventually get his head stuck in a beehive.

Yes.

To obtain this NES masterpiece, simply go to the Animal Crossing homepage.  Select 'Travel' just underneath "The Crossing Guardian" headline, and then click on the "Welcome back, sir..." banner near the bottom of the screen featuring Porter the Monkey.

My God, I'm so addicted that I even know their names now.

Once you've clicked on it enough times to bring up the new window, just follow the instructions as always (remember, you'll need to enter your birthday, but not any other details aside from your Animal Crossing Town Name and your name to generate the code), and then you'll be set!

TalkBack / The Princess' Plea
« on: November 06, 2002, 03:38:07 PM »
The trailer that will shown for The Legend of Zelda is available for download - will you answer the Princess' plea?

Zelda.com has updated their site with the trailer for Link's latest adventure.  This trailer is going to be shown in US cinemas, and it's a very cool one.  A voice begins the trailer with "In the land of Hyrule... there echoes a legend...".  While the voice continues to narrate, the camera passes across a dark landscape, towards a dark, twisted tower.  In it, we see the narrator - a hooded figure, who tells of a 'boy who became a man'.  Game footage is shown, and then we once again see the hooded figure, speaking of the boy's destiny, "which is, above all else, to save...me." The trailer has a dark, mysterious feel to it, and it makes you curious about the game, too.

There's some gameplay footage shown, some old, some new - but most importantly, it announces that it's due Spring 2003.  Not too far away at all, really.

TalkBack / Australian Nintendo News Update
« on: November 02, 2002, 02:19:27 PM »
News on latest local release dates from Nintendo, Acclaim's comment on the classification rejection for BMX XXX and why AFL 2003 is now AFL 2004.

Seeing it's getting closer to the Christmas flood of games (after the usual yearly drought), Nintendo Australia has updated their site with updated release date information.  Along with release dates now going up till April 2003 rather than the end of this year, the following games have been listed with these dates:

GAMECUBE

  • Eternal Darkness - 7th November
  • Star Fox Adventures - 15th November
  • Mario Party 4 - 22nd November

    GAME BOY ADVANCE
  • Game & Watch Gallery Advance - 7th November
  • Metroid Fusion - 29th November
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 6th December

There are more dates on-site, so be sure to check them out.  Also listed on Nintendo's site (finally) is Animal Crossing, but with no date at this stage.  It's currently listed as TBA, along with Metroid Prime.  Animal Crossing's profile also has this information:

GET CONNECTED! Connect to Game Boy Advance using a Nintendo GCN GBA Cable (sold separately) to travel to a new island and design new clothes. When you're ready for even more, you can connect an e-Reader (coming in 2003) and scan Animal Crossing e-cards to get special presents - maybe even classic NES games!

This game has just been released in the US. There is no confirmation yet as to if/when this game will be released in PAL format for Australia - but we will keep you posted of any announcements!!!

Let's hope that that if there are any major changes to the game, such as season or holiday alterations, the item codes will still be usable with the US version of Animal Crossing so that international trading is possible.

You may remember a while back that AFL 2003 had been announced for release on the Nintendo GameCube.  Unfortunately, Acclaim hasn't been able to release it - here's a quote directly from Acclaim's PR explaining why:

"Unforunately we had to cancel AFL Live 2003 for the Nintendo Game Cube this year.  We and the game's developers were concerned that the tight deadline we had set ourselves would compromise the quality of the product for this console and dissapoint both AFL fans and Nintendo Game Cube owners.  This was clearly unacceptable.  Instead we will be focussing on the next AFL title, AFL Live 2004, for a release on all next generation formats, and ensure that we can bring the best possible AFL experience in a game to Nintendo Game Cube owners late next year."

Acclaim Australia has also been in the news (as I'm sure you've already heard) after BMX XXX was rejected for release in Australia by our ratings board.  I asked Acclaim whether they would try to submit a toned down version of BMX XXX (this was done around last year when Grand Theft Auto 3 was rejected for classification).  Acclaim stated that although there is a toned down NTSC version coming, BMX XXX probably won't make it to Australia at all.

And, seeing Phantasy Star Online is causing such a stir here at PGC, I thought I'd finish off with when it's currently due out in Australia.  The current release date for Phantasy Star Online in Australia is (wait for it) December 1st, 2003.  I'll see what information I can dig up on it and the modem/broadband adaptor release date.

    Cheers everyone.

TalkBack / Junior to Traumatize Animals

Now you can get your hands on a free copy of Donkey Kong Jr. - in Animal Crossing.

Much like the free Soccer game that is being given away, Animal-Crossing.com is giving away a code to use in your Animal Crossing town for a free copy of Donkey Kong Jr..  All that is required is that you click on the link above and keep clicking the "Oh darling Pete, Where have you been lately?" banner until a new window pops up.

In this window, you'll be once again asked for your birthday (which you need to enter) and other details which are optional, and then you'll be shown a Flash version of the Animal Crossing keyboard.  Simply spell out your name and your town's name (remember to use the correct case!) and a code will be generated.  Write a letter to any animal with this code exactly as you see it displayed (including the key symbol on the first line) and you'll be set for DK Jr. action within a day or two!

Donkey Kong Jr. is a great NES game, so be sure to get this code so you don't miss out on an easy way to get it!  Have fun!  And don't forget to get your copy of Soccer by clicking on the 'Dear Pecan' banner!  The Soccer giveaway ends this month.

TalkBack / Mario Heads Back to Brooklyn

Faster than a Koopa shell knocking out a row of Goombas, Charles Martinet has been and gone - and Ben was there to meet him in Melbourne!

As mentioned on the Nintendo Australia homepage, Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario, has visited Sydney and Melbourne.  If you didn't see him on the weekend, then unfortunately you've missed him as he's headed back home.  But don't worry if you did miss out - here's what happened on Friday:

Heading off early, I checked out the area where they were setting up to meet Mario and a small group of people had already gathered, waiting.  There were three demo units which all contained Super Mario Sunshine, and one of them was hooked up via the Wavebird.  Once it was all setup, you could wait in line to meet Mario and ask him questions.  Before that, however, Charles came down the line and was autographing cards for people - people were able to talk to him, shake his hand and ask him what his job was like.  Being the Nintendo freak I was, I asked him to sign my Mario Sunshine box as well - and he did:

There's a backstory to the 'Domo Arigato' thing.

Charles is a very nice guy to talk to, and you can tell that he really loves his job.  You've probably seen his name in credits for games such as Rogue Leader and Men in Black 2 (in which he got to record various aliens grunting and screaming).  Keep an eye out for him in vocal credits - you'll be surprised where he turns up.

After that, he disappeared, and on a big Plasma screen we got to talk to Mario himself.  Various questions were asked, including the standard "What's your relationship with the Princess?" and "Is Luigi jealous of your fame?" questions, to the strange ones, like "What is your relationship to Luigi?" (which was returned with an awkward pause, a look around and then "He's-a my brother!") and "Mario, what do you think of the PlayStation?" (to which Mario said "Uhh...excuse me." He quickly ran off screen, and a retching sound was heard. Mario comes back, and said "Uhh..what was that again, sorry?").  During the questions, Mario let people know that he likes to play Luigi's Mansion so that he can rescue himself, that he loves the Princess because "She's-a so beautiful...*sigh*" and that he has such a great jumping ability because he's always having so much fun.  He is also not jealous of Luigi's slim figure.

There were also thirty copies of Mario Sunshine available and ten bundle packs of a GameCube, Mario Sunshine and a Memory Card 59 to be sold.  Those were snapped up almost instantly, so forty people have had the chance to play Mario Sunshine nearly a week early.  You could also pre-order Mario Sunshine if you wanted to.  If you pre-ordered or bought Mario Sunshine, you got the chance to win tickets to the AFL Grand Final, including a breakfast, and a Grand Final After Party - pretty sweet.

And, (as if you needed proof), Mario thinks that Planet GameCube is #1.  See, I have it in writing:

PGC IS NUMBER ONE! Mario said so.

TalkBack / Catch the Voice of Mario in Australia!
    « on: September 19, 2002, 04:37:08 AM »
If you're in Sydney or Melbourne, that is...

Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario himself, is visiting both Sydney and Melbourne to promote Super Mario Sunshine, which is due out in Australia in a couple of weeks.  Nintendo's setup a couple of special events where you can play Super Mario Sunshine, win events for prizes, and meet the man himself!  Here's the locations of the special events from Nintendo:

Sunday 22nd September - Harvey Norman Moore Park
    1:00-2:00pm
    3:00-4:00pm

Friday 27th September - Myer Melbourne
    11:00-12:00pm
    1:30-2:30pm

Sunday 29th September - Myer Megamart – Auburn
    12:00-2:00pm

According to Nintendo, 'Mario will also be making a special appearance on the Big Screen at the AFL 2002 Grand Final at the MCG.'  Who knows what crazy antics he'll get up to?

TalkBack / Japanese Cube Modem Compatible for US
    « on: September 18, 2002, 02:48:08 PM »
Looks like we can all breathe a huge sigh of relief...

Importers have been worried as to whether the Nintendo GameCube Japanese 56k Modem Adapter will be compatible with US systems.  There were even rumours that the Japanese modem would not be compatible with US systems.  But, it turns out that they were just that - rumours.  The Nintendo GameCube Japanese 56k Modem will work just fine on US consoles, along with the Japanese consoles that they were designed for.  The 56k Modem also works just fine on the Panasonic Q, for those that are interested.  Well, phew.

Importers of Phantasy Star Online Episode I and II can rest easy, as they can now spend countless hours slaughtering monsters, harassing overseas players and typing in stuff in Japanese to confuse players to no end.

TalkBack / Game Boy Color Reaches New Fashion Heights
    « on: September 17, 2002, 01:45:33 AM »
Don't have any pockets to store your Game Boy?  Stick them in your shoes and make a fashion statement!

Ah, Japan.  The land of the toilet-roll hat, chopsticks with their own fans and of course, Engrish (Shine Get!).  And now Japan can chalk off another task on their list of things to do with their telescopic chalk holder, as they've invented the latest chic fashion: Game Boy Color SHOES AND BOOTS.

That's right, the humble Game Boy has been turned into something truly wearable - no more worrying with wrist straps that may snap.  You just put on a pair of these and you'll never have to worry about leaving your system at home - you can pop the Game Boy out of the boots and they're still fully playable!  Well, unless you went trudging about in mud, or decided to do some cross country running.  But you'd probably sprain your ankle before damaging the Game Boy in a pair of these, anyway.

According to Syberpunk, these boots are all the rage with teens in Japan.  Not for me though - I'm waiting for the Panasonic Q hat.

TalkBack / Australian Nintendo News Update

Nintendo Australia updates their site - and thus provides us with local information including hardware and software release dates.

Nintendo Australia has once again given their site a fairly major update, this time adding complete sites for Game Boy Advance, Pokemon Mini and N64.  There's also some Game Boy Color information.  As for the Pokemon Mini, seeing that most stores that carry them have been discounting them to about half their original price, it looks like Nintendo doesn't plan to release any of the new Pokemon Mini games that have come out since its release in Japan.

Aside from this, Nintendo has provided us with a completely revamped release date list.  It lists all currently released games and upcoming games for the GameCube and Game Boy Advance up until the end of the year.  I won't list them all (as they're accessible on the site, and have been for some time) but here are a few of the main Nintendo ones, including hardware:

    Resident Evil - September 13th
Platinum Gameboy Advance - September 19th
Disney’s Magical Mirror starring Mickey Mouse - September 20th
Disney’s Magical Quest starring Mickey and Minnie - September 20th
    Memory Card 251 - October 4th
Wavebird Wireless Controller - October 4th
Super Mario Sunshine - October 4th
    Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3 - October 4th

Because the listing only goes up to the end of the year, there is no mention of games like Metroid Prime or The Legend of Zelda.  Animal Crossing and Doshin the Giant are not listed at all (but from what I've heard, Animal Crossing is planned for next year).  Other Nintendo titles such as Metroid Fusion, Star Fox Adventures and The Legend of Zelda (GBA) only have months listed for their release dates at present.

And yes, the Resident Evil Friday September 13 release date is deliberate.  Oooh, spooky.

TalkBack / New Dates for WaveBird and Memory Card 251
    « on: August 07, 2002, 03:27:17 PM »
Not exact release dates, but certainly more accurate than they were previously.

Nintendo Australia recently revamped their homepage, and although the Upcoming Games list has been lost (and is presumably being rewritten with dates now), there are more accurate for two eagerly awaited pieces of GameCube Hardware, along with prices:

    Memory Card 251
    RRP: AU$49.95
    Release Date:  October 2002

    WaveBird Controller
    RRP: AU$69.95
    Release Date:  October 2002
