Odds on Hirari Sakura Zamurai / Nimble Cherry Blossom Princess whatever coming stateside? Sounds like a cool title.

I hope devs see 3DLand and games like this and see the appeal of the 3DS stereoscopic screen, as it's gotten some hate and people are aligning it with the junky 3D conversions of films. When used correctly and thoughtfully, it's like nothing else out there.

FreakyForms is freaky awesome.

If you want a more regular dose of Zelda (Williams), follow her on Twitter. Wish these ads were used in U.S., though the contract stipulations probably are the reason why...

Okay. This is a dumb question. But...  is Super Monkey Ball worth getting now if you've never played the series? I realize the obvious answer is, "Um, it just made a top 10 list, so yes" but I'm wondering if much of the love is from playing it in 2001, when the series and GC were fresh/new. If I played this today for the first time, does it hold up?

Sort of the same question with Geist. Don't know if it'll make the NWR list, but UncleBob mentioned it, so I figured I'd be somewhat on topic...

MagicCow64, I agree with your first point...  I also read the text and skip forward, leaving the voice acting a half-spoken mess. Have no need for a fully-voiced Zelda game in the future. I recently acquired a 360 and I've gotten so frustrated with how slooow so many of the games are when there's a cutscene every 10 minutes. Bah. Just let me play, give me the good stuff.
I disagree, however, that Other M was such a "souring" experience. Sure, some of the writing was laughable, but the core gameplay was compelling and interesting enough for me not to be too bothered by the story. Maybe it was the sheer novelty of a full-bore Nintendo cinematic game, but I thought the cutscenes/v.o. was neat at best, uninspired at worst, but oh well. Too many people hated on that game for not enough of a good reason, imo.

This game sounds awesome and wacky and totally odd. At first the 7 bucks price tag seems steep, but that's just Apple's race-to-the-bottom app store price war doing the talking. The crazy Mario/Link, um, links above show the deep potential for this kind of DIY game. But I'm a bit confused...  do you just make the character and then they roam freely? Or you do you directly control them? Seems a bit thin if all you do is populate the world and watch what happens. But maybe that's the point, to see what randomness unfold? Either way, I'm in. Hope there's a market for this, since to me it's way more interesting than half the popular genres out there right now.

My first listen to the new format, and I like. Nice work on the editing, Mr. Thompson. Question: What's the music the introduces the NYCC segment? It's driving me crazy (in that I can't think of it even though it's awesome and on the tip of my tongue). Thanks.

« on: October 22, 2011, 04:48:57 PM »
As much as their policies make Westerners crazy sometimes, I'm so glad Nintendo is a Japanese company with deeply local sensibilities. If they merely jumped on the global bandwagon, they'd try pumping out some bro-ey shooter. Instead, their new Wii game... is whatever this is. Cracks me up. Refreshing to see such a huge company continue to not care what so many people are saying about them and just keep making what makes them happy. 'Cause more often that not, it's what will make a lot of other people happy, too.

I really enjoyed the piano-based songs in Bloodrayne: Betrayal, and will have to listen more closely to other WayForward projects scored by Mr. K.  A fun and worthwhile interview. Hope people click and read this.

This is a late post, but I appreciate y'all reading and discussing my email (re: the validity of iOS games, etc.). And if you have an iDevice and love rhythm games such as Elite Beat Agents or Rhythm Heaven, I highly recommend Groove Coaster. Especially if you enjoyed Space Invaders Extreme on DS, as it's from the same people and includes some tracks from the game.

A great idea for an article. I'm always looking at my game stats for some reason. Oddly satisfying. Here's my 5:

1. Ocarina of Time 3D - 36:27
2. Pilotwings Resort - 15:13
3. nintendogs + cats - 9:03
4. StreetPass Mii Plaza - 8:59
5. Steel Diver - 8:14

Heavy on the 1st party launch titles, I guess...

TalkBack / Re: NES Ambassador Games Edition
« on: October 04, 2011, 10:34:36 PM »
@xcwarrior: You took the words out of my mouth. I was seriously about to defend both NES Open Tournament Golf and Yoshi...  strangely, the two games out of all the Ambassador titles I've played the most of. (Pardon the dangling preposition.) Metroid is worth it for the music alone; that title theme is still haunting, especially if you let it play for awhile until it returns to the ambient three-note opening. I've enjoyed trying Ice Climbers, Balloon Fight and Wrecking Crew as something of a history lesson, and will probably come back to the latter two on occasion. These earlier, more arcade titles are probably better portable games than even the much-lauded Zelda, just due to their levels being short and simple. But, you know, Restore Points...   anyway, I'm close to rambling. Hope people try out the less recognized games, as you might just be charmed by 'em.

@Tansunn That's pretty much exactly what I've done. Might be weird, but I find great pleasure in organizing and moving around my icons. That's one reason I like the UI better for both Wii and 3DS over other systems (well, I'm comparing both to the 360 I guess) which is just a list of names. Aside from all the other ads and stuff. Blech.
Another possible OCD tendency: My comment that these "trailers" are but gameplay vids, at least the ones I've seen so far. Like the bit of art on the icon, but like the E3 videos much better so far.
And when can we get another Nintendo 3D show? I enjoyed her, I mean it.

I like the idea of second-tier platformer/mascot games. There's a copy of Billy Hatcher sitting at my local GameStop and I keep eyeing it....  would love a reason to pick it up (other than, you know, maybe I should anyway and just play it).

Maybe I'm the anti-anti-Neal, but all the negativity is tough to stomach. I appreciate Scott's level-headed message to calm down - "it's going to be okay." I'm not worried about my 3DS, and I'm frankly quite happy with the 10 NES games. The older, more arcade-style games are perfect for quick pick-up-and-play sessions, whereas something like Kirby's Adventure as a longer platformer might not work as well on a portable. Yoshi is actually pretty addicting, Golf has completely sucked me in, and Wrecking Crew is a fun little history lesson. Come back soon, Neal. Sometimes it's okay to be an apologist. Better that than a curmudgeon.

James, you're a talented violinist....  but you're wrong about NES Open Tournament golf. I love plowing through 18 holes in half an hour and trying to best my score. Sadly, it's pretty realistic, in that I can barely break 90. Very simple fun, the NES game I've played most on my 3DS so far.

TalkBack / Re: Disney Epic Mickey 2 in the Works
« on: August 28, 2011, 07:09:38 PM »
Does the idea of this sequel remind anyone else of the 16-bit era platformer sequels, using basically the same assets but add a character with slightly different abilities? Not that more time in the same world is necessarily bad... but it seems weird, given the big deal people seemed to make about Epic Mickey and then--Oh yeah, here's another one. Wii U controls could make it a whole new ballgame, though. We'll see.

No love for the TRUE greatest baseball game ever... Ken Griffey Jr. Presents: Major League Baseball? Shameful.

And inspired by the conversation, I sought out Illusion of Gaia. Found it at a local used games store selling for $33. Made a mental note, then went to eBay and saw Gaia in a lot of 7 games, including Super Punch-Out (another great "sports" game unmentioned) and Alien 3 (a pretty awesome licensed games if I recall) and Populous, and won it for $18 total, incl. shipping. Sorry brick 'n mortar store. I am happy.

Love the BIT.TRIP games, but I'm not sure which collection to get. Already have BEAT, CORE, and RUNNER on WiiWare, so I feel compelled to get the 3DS version, since I know all the content will be at least somewhat new...   but all of the extra stuff on the Wii disc is very intriguing. I'm also concerned the control will be tricky on the portable version. Hmm. I guess it's a win-win either way. Just thought I'd voice my thoughts.

TalkBack / Re: Investors Heavily Criticize Nintendo's Performance
« on: August 12, 2011, 11:49:27 AM »
I agree with what the vast majority of you here are saying...  please no don't do it (but they're not going to do it, anyway).

The same investors in 1986 might have said, This NES thing needs a VHS player. It even looks like it could play them...  you're missing the next evolution in home entertainment!

In 1996: Use CDs not cartridges! (Well, they might have been right about that one....)

In 2006: The Wii doesn't have a DVD player!? Craziness!

Okay, maybe the analogy isn't quite right, but the general idea is that a lot of people think they know what Nintendo should do based on short-term trends. But the Big N has been a force in the market for nearly 30 years and that's no accident. Sure the market is changing, but it's changed before. Let's not get all carried away and follow the leader after being one for decades.
