NOTE: I know we have talked about the VC to death, but I thought the editorial was very interesting and offered a great idea as to how to handle the VC.

The editorial talks about how Nintendo should consider demos of the VC games so that you can try before you buy. The guy offers some really good points and I agree with him. I think the prices for the VC games are a robbery, and it would suck that you spend money on a crappy game, so trying it before you download it sounds logical and not that hard to pull off.

Unless you are clueless about it, its been confirmed that 4kids entertainment has dropped the One Piece rights and will no longer dub and distribute the rest of the series. So far they have only dubbed 100 episodes of the series, leave the other 100 up in the air.

So how does this play in the grand scheme of things? Well, you all know that Nintendo has been touting "One Piece Ultimate adventure" as a Wii title worth checking out. Its been shown in all the Wii trailers and it was even demoed at E3!

My question is, with 4kids no longer dubbing One Piece does this mean that the game might not get released in the US? Does this leave Bandai/Namco in charge of localizing and releasing the game?

Before you say "the game will not come out!", keep in mind that the game WAS demoed at E3. Why would Nintendo put money into demoing games that will never come out in the States?

From what I know, the One Piece games have done well and people have knowledge of the franchise so it wouldn't be like Bandai is dropping a bomb on people.

Can anyone contribute to this? Anyone know any information I may be missing?

Famitsu just polled people about the recent news of DQ IX going to the DS. Despite the great joy the news brought to people, apparently some Japanese fans are not happy with the announcement...

It's a well known fact that the Wii is VERY hard to find in the US (don't know about Europe) and I am sure many children, families and fanboys (like myself) were Wii-less this Christmas. But apparently the Wii is around in Japan, and people don't seem to care...

Don't believe me? These should say something...



Look at those Wiis piling up!! In people in the US saw this they would KILL to reach the pile first.

But now, the Japanese are looking for something of bigger importance...



Yeah, they are buying the DS lite as if it was going out of style while the Wii (and the PS3) remains un-loved.

But my question to you is, is this a glimpse into the future of the console in Japan? Why do I have the feeling that the Wii will be insanely huge in the world but will come second to the DS in Japan?

Again, this breaks my heart. Hey Nintendo! Take those unsold Wiis and bring them here, where people actually want one.

UPDATE: I am full of crap! Turns out that the signs say "sold out" and those boxes are empty.

Surprised no one has made mention of this...

It's a wonderful world is a Square RPG for the DS. It is being done by the same team that did the Kingdom Hearts series (complete with Tetsuya Nomura doing the designs).

The story sounds interesting. It reminds me of the "play the game for your life" elements of movies like Saw (minus the blood and gore). The battle engine sounds confusing as hell. Hopefully it becomes easier to understand once you get into it.

There is a fear that because the game takes place in Shibuya and dives into Japanese pop culture it might not be released in the US. Hopefully they can change the setting. The story's universal enough, they can change it from Japan to the US (and have it take place in either New York or LA).

The Postal service has been ruining my week like crazy. Last week SB sent a care package with some of the prizes he got from the Naruto contest, along with his copy of Elite Beat Agents. Technically, the package should've arrived by now. Its been a week since its been sent and NOTHING has arrived...

I am angry as hell because I am severely bored with nothing to play and it seems the fates are doing everything they can to prevent me to get some gaming joy.

There are still no Wiis, my ASS of a friend lost my copy of Dragon quest VIII and the Postal service are either taking their sweet time with the package or they lost it for good...

Been having an annoying week because of this...

Keep in mind that nothing has been confirmed or denied, but Go Nintendo has looked over the facts and they point out that no mention has been made of the game's online mode.

I doubt Nintendo would be THAT stupid to axe the online aspect of the game in one of their biggest games yet (it is also very vital when the Wii goes online as well). But at the same time, Nintendo can be that stupid as well.

Looks like we have to wait and see...

I noticed that many of the new members put images in their signatures when it is forbidden.

My question is; can the moderators turn off the image code in the signature section? If you can, turn off the image code so that people don't go crazy and put images in their signatures.

Nintendo Gaming / Chocobo picture book. Looking good!

For the uninitiated, Chocobo picture book (I think this is the right title), is Square's take on the DS mini game formula using the beloved mascot.

I admit at first I didn't care much for it, but after reading an import review on Game brink I am very interested. Looks like it could be a very cute and fun game, a neat diversion from the deeper DS games. It also reminds me of Chocobo racing and Chocobo dungeon (which were simple but fun games in their own right).

I hope they decide to bring it over to the US.

Wii Play delayed in US

It hasn’t been officially confirmed by Nintendo, but I would take their online press room as proof enough. As of yesterday Nintendo’s online press room had Wii Play dated for January 15th. I was in the press room this morning, and now the title has been bumped to February 12th according to the list.

I guess NoA doesn’t want WarioWare receiving any first party competition.


Suckfest...Oh well, at least this guarantees there is at least one Wii title in Februar.

Just now, I saw the US commercial for Rayman Raving Rabbids on Nick at Nite. The commercial uses the same bunny animation seen on the trailers and scientific facts ads. But here's the interesting thing, at one point they show Rayman for like 3 seconds, then he is crushed by a sofa, then the bunnies take over the commercial and it shows them playing the mini games.

This made me realize something...Ubisoft has created characters that are so funny, so hilarious and so enduring that they were able to overshadow their own official mascot. I mean, the game may be called "Rayman raving rabbids", but the advertising focuses on the bunnies and a great deal of the games feature the bunnies only.

Isn't it funny how things work sometimes?

These are brand new details found on the latest issue of Nintendo Power. Some interesting stuff:
* Characters Banjo and Conker have been replaced by Dixie Kong and Tiny Kong. Other characters include Pipsy, Tiptup, Diddy Kong, Timber, Bumper, and Krunch. Four additional blank spaces are on the title screen for unlockable characters, for a total of 12 characters overall.

* “All of the great character animation that you remember from the old game is in the new version, and it looks even better than you remember it: the textures — often supersaturated and blurry on the N64 — are crisp and bright on the DS.”

* When boosting off the starting line, players must rub the touchscreen for the car and plane, and blow into the microphone for the hovercraft.

* The speed-boosting bananas that littered tracks in the N64 version are gone; players will now have to rely on power-ups and skills alone to win.

* The Silver Coin Challenges from the N64 game are gone. Replacing them is an on-rails target-shooting minigame, where you fly through each course on Taj’s magic carpet, popping balloons from a first-person perspective.

* Before, two red balloons snagged you the homing missile power-up, then a third red balloon gave you ten rockets. Now the missile power-up goes single rocket –> five rockets –> homing missile.

* As reported in an earlier GoNintendo update, every track you unlock in single player mode can be played in single-card multiplayer mode. There is an online mode as well.

* All of the courses from the old game, as well as the bosses and the overworld, have returned, and NP hints there is more still to come. The game hits North America this February.

Not surprised that Banjo and Conker got the axe. 4 more characters? Well, there was that chicken and the clock guy, maybe some more Donkey Kong characters?

Go Nintendo posted a newstory about a rumor of 3 new Katamary games coming in 2007, one for the PS3, one for XBOX Live and the other for the Wii.

Keep in mind that this is still a rumor, but considering that Namco has pledged 30 titles for the Wii in 2007, I wouldn't be surprised if one of them was a Katamary game.

What I find surprising is that a while back the creator dismissed the Wii as being a gimmick and looked as if the series would be Sony only for a while. Also, 3 Katamary games? As much as I enjoyed the first game, and had some moderate fun with the second, how in the HELL will they keep the games fresh?

Also, with the news of the PoP game being a wiimake, I wouldn't be surprised if the game turns out to be the first game with new motion based controls.

Unless you missed it, I've been working hard to find a store with Wiis available, which have lead to failure so far.

I personally don't mind it much. I waited nearly 3 years for the thing, I can wait another. But the one that has his heart and soul on getting one this Christmas is my nephew, and I can't help but feel guilty.

See, the minute I showed him the concept of the Wii he was floored. Since then, he's been doing nothing but talk Wii, dream Wii and even DRAW Wii.

Now before he even put it on his Christmas list, I warned him that Wiis would be very hard to find in the Holidays so he better not put too much hope into it and ask for an alternative. I even told him that if he wasn't getting a Wii I wouldn't be either. But my warning has been in vain as he is STILL highly hopeful of getting one.

How bad is it? So bad that just now, he kept asking my sister about it, then he actually asked "Santa first arrives in Japan, right? Maybe he can get one directly from Nintendo and bring it!".

I feel bad for even introducing him the Wii in the first place. Had I known he would be so set on getting one, I would've NEVER shown videos and pics of the damn thing.

I feel so bad that I am THIS close to dropping the "Santa ain't real, kid" bomb on him as even with the warnings that he will not get a Wii he is setting himself up for a HUGE disappointment.

I just read this story at Go Nintendo and while I don't know if part of this story is made up for the sake of drama, I got scared at the fact that people were ready to tear the woman apart just to get her Wii...But what got me the most was that she needed police escort in order to go home with her Wii.

I must confess something. While I really enjoy the holidays, I HATE the commercial bullcrap behind it, ESPECIALLY the commercials for crap because they are able to convince people that buying crap equals love and acceptance.

I could go on about this, but I just saw a Wal mart commercial that did it for me...

It starts with a little girl approaching her mother with a letter for Santa. She asks her to deliver the letter for her. The mother looks at her and says "But you already sent a letter to Santa!".

"I know, but this is for my stocking!"- the girl replies.

The mother then becomes concerned and says "Not only is it a little late to ask, Santa is on a budget!"

"But mommy, Santa is magical!"- the girl replies in a smart alecky way and  leaves the room.

I almost lost all the blood in my body when I saw this. I mean, this is taking Holiday greed to the next level.

A real parent would NOT let this fly. If the kid already asked for a toy, there's no way a parent would let the kids get away with a second list. If the kid pulls the "Santa can get me anything I want!" crap, that's the time to drop the "Santa does not exist" bomb.

I hate Holiday commercials, I really do...

This is a text review I wrote for another website. I know the game is old but I enjoyed the game so much that I decided to write a review for it!

The story of Geist’s development is as interesting as the story of its lead character John Raimi. The game was first unveiled at E3 2002 alongside big name games like Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. While it was definitely buried under the shadow of its big name brothering, the concept was exciting and had a promising future as a unique, mature Nintendo franchise. But after E3, the game surprisingly disappeared for 2 years. No new screens or updates arose, waking the suspicions that the game had become the victim of vaporware development. But in 2005, the game finally surfaced and would be released sometime during the fall gaming season.

So, did the extended development period help it along?

Review
Geist is a non-traditional FPS game, something akin to the Metroid Prime series on the Gamecube and Nintendo DS. Careful thinking alongside sneaky tricks and watchful techniques are preferred over melee combat and all out frag matches. In other words, it was considered to be “the thinking man’s FPS”.

When the game starts, you are a normal, run of the mill counter terrorism member investigating a weird corporation called Volks. In fact, the first few minutes of the game play like a tired FPS storyline. But once Raimi is captured and forced onto the soul extracting machine its where the game truly begins.

After being freed from a weird simulator that explains the basics of gameplay, you learn that you are nothing but a ghost, stripped of physical existence and fighting skills. But we quickly learn that being a ghost has its advantages and its what drives the game forth. As a ghost, you are able to take possession of objects and living beings like humans and animals. The last half, however, isn’t easy to posses. You must scare them first in order to make them vulnerable to your possession. In order to do that you must posses various objects then make them “come to life” in order to scare the crap out of them. Once they are scared and you posses them, their bodies and skills are yours to control.

This is a vital aspect of the gameplay, and one that turns the game into something truly special. You need to take control over a great deal of hosts in order to complete the missions and move the story forward. Sometimes these missions can be a delight once successfully completed. I won’t spoil the details for you, but there is something almost magical about taking possession of a TV, then calling some mice forward, then scaring them with a demonic picture of a cat, allowing you to posses THEM. Again, it’s a great feeling rarely seen in a game (which isn’t surprising, since Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s head developer, supervised the development and contributed ideas).

Being able to posses a host provides a puzzle element to the game. Scaring people can sometimes be a lengthy process, forcing you to posses various things at once. This can be very fun and frustrating at the same time. It can be fun because you must discover just what makes that person tick before you can carry on with your haunting, as well as determine the sequence you must do in order to perform a successful possession. But sometimes it can be frustrating because you must look EVERYWHERE for that one item that completes the puzzle. Keep in mind this doesn’t happen often, but it can be annoying spending more than 30 minutes looking around for that vital object, only to find it by sheer luck.

The thing that makes this truly unforgettable, though, is the authenticity of it all. You will feel like you have taken possession of a unique individual, rather than just feel like you are controlling the default character model. When taking possession of animals you will have limited vision as they would have and experience the once familiar world through their eyes.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a first person shooter without a shooting segment and even if it isn’t the entire emphasis of the game there’s still a lot of shooting to be done. This part of the game is very solid, but not without its flaws. Movement is done with the joystick while aiming is done with the C-stick. The controls just lack the fluidity seen on PC FPSs, sometimes adding to the frustration level. I admit that after a while I was able to get used to the aiming system, but even then I wished it was better (something that, hopefully, the Wii will be able to fix come November).

This aiming system can also get in the way even during the exploration and ghost sessions. In order to fully interact with something you need to aim your view precisely at that person, animal or item. Because the aiming can be so clunky it can sometimes take a while before that item is in your field of vision. It isn’t as annoying as in the shooting segments but it can get grating trying to get something and having the system get in the way of doing it.

Another problem the shooting portion has is the reloading. Simply put, it is far too slow, even with guns that require little effort when loading it. Again, to some it may not be a big deal, but there are timed missions that are crucial to the storyline. You can literally lose precious seconds because they were spent reloading.

As some have put it, compared to “true” FPS, the game is very sluggish; something that can turn potential fans off.

But even with those apparent issues it is a solid shooter, especially when it isn’t main focus in a game like Geist.

One overall problem I found in the game has is difficulty. There are times in which you will breeze through missions and bosses, while others can be controller breaking difficult. The best example of this are the last two bosses in the game. Without spoiling the surprise, one takes a lot of time and patience to defeat, while the other can be defeated in 10 minutes if you know how to control your character. Also, some of the bosses are rather straightforward and, dare I say it, un-original in its execution, while others actually require you to think and move fast while conserving those precious health packs.

To some, this might not be enough to break their enjoyment, but it is certainly there and I wish N-Space would’ve developed that further.

But perhaps the most annoying part of the gameplay is the button smashing. Right near the end of the game you will be faced against ghosts that will take possession of your host. If you don’t get rid of them they will destroy it by guiding it near danger. The only way you can free yourself from their grasp is by smashing the A button like it was a frenzied Mario Party game. After a while, my hands got tired and it became extremely annoying to do it more than once. Thankfully, this only happened at the end of the game, but had this been a crucial gameplay element, trust me when I say I would’ve taken a lot of points off.

The story is a mish mash of many clichéd science fiction archetypes, but it is intriguing, suspenseful and interesting through out. Unlike in RPGs and other story-based games, the game doesn’t slow down to a screeching halt in order to bring you a big chunk of the story. It is constantly developed through gameplay and small chunks of cutscenes here and there. It might not be something that you will cherish greatly, but one you shan’t easily forget.

As far as extras go, the game is limited. There are the standard multiplayer modes (which while breaking convention isn’t captivating enough) and hidden host and ghost collectibles that you can find throughout the game (which unlock multiplayer characters and stages).

Overall even with its flaws (which come from in-experienced development rather than laziness and malice), Geist can be one fun and engaging romp. The overall concept brings new life to the already tired FPS genre and one that would’ve taken off had it been released on brighter circumstances.

Gameplay score: 8 out of 10

Graphics and sound
Geist was meant to be a second/third generation Gamecube title, and the graphics are proof of that. Granted, they aren’t bad but certainly isn’t the best I’ve ever seen on the GC.

Character models have that nostalgic, early gen feel to them. It clearly proves that N-Space still working with character modeling on videogames. I have to admit, they aren’t as ugly as in other games, but still need some time to be worked on.

The game also suffers from frame rate issues. The game aims to run at a smooth 30 FPS but the game constantly switches between 30 and 60, sometimes going below 30 during heated shooting scenes.

The part where the game shines graphically, though, is on the ghost elements as well as the special effects. As I mentioned before, when you posses an animal the world will according to how that animal views it on a daily basis, so if the animal sees everything distorted and in black and white you will see it that way too. It adds to the overall excitement of the game.

Monster design is pretty neat, but something you haven’t already seen in movies, anime and TV shows.

So overall, the game will not win any awards for graphical prowess but its certainly above average, especially when coming from a small development house like this one.

Music and sound is rock solid. Nothing stands out as being truly unforgettable but like the graphics for a small game production is it quite impressive. The voices are perhaps the best element in the entire game. Once again, for a small game the cast did an excellent job. It avoids the pitfalls many games of this caliber suffer from (hell, even high profile, big name games suffer from this). No exaggerated accents or acting, or groan inducing voices here, folks. Again, I am quite impressed.

Graphics score: 7.5 out of 10
Music and sound score: 8 out of 10

Final thoughts
It is a great shame this game came out after being in development for so long and right at the end of the Gamecube’s life cycle. A long development cycle with a lack of hype from Nintendo made sure this game went under everyone’s radar, and the very late release in a lackluster console didn’t help it either. It’s almost a crime, really. Geist is perhaps one of the few FPS games that dare to tear down convention and try something new and daring, yet was heavily buried under the shadows of the Halos, the Dooms and even the Half lifes.

But still, you shouldn’t let this stop you from even trying the game out (especially with the Wii coming out with GC backwards comparability). Even if the game is marred down by gameplay execution flaws (some due to in-experience, others from typical console FPS issues), the immense you get from playing this game, successfully completing its missions and thinking your way out of a possession puzzle is one unlike anything ever seen on a videogame.

I recommend it!

General Chat / Your favorite Holiday episode of your favorite show

Considering the commercialization of the Holidays forces TV shows to do at least one Christmas episode, which is your all time favorite Christmas episode of your favorite TV show.

Mine would be:
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air: The first Christmas themed episode where Will goes overboard with the decorations. I mainly like it because it reminds me of when mom would go overboard with the decorations and there was ALWAYS a reaction.

Family Guy: I LOVED it when Lois finally loses it and goes on a rampage at the end. It also isn't as mean spirited as the Futurama Christmas episodes.

Doctor Who 2005-2006: The Christmas episode was great, although the episode was more of a normal Dr. Who episode since they celebrate Christmas for like 10 minutes.

Animaniacs: They actually released a VHS made up of all the Christmas themed Animaniacs shorts. I always loved watching it as a kid, especially the Gold wrapper short.

Love Hina Silent Eve: OK, this is anime, not a normal TV show, but the special was really good, perhaps even better than the traditional TV special seen in the US.

I know some of my favorite Cartoon shows had Christmas episodes, but at the moment I fail to remember them.

Since its very likely I won't get a Wii this year, and SB is lending me his copy of Elite Beat Agents, what DS games do you recommend me getting for the Holidays?

Just so you know, I already have New Super Mario Bros. I asked for Starfox Command, is that one any good?

I ask because since it is VERY likely that I won't be getting a Wii this Christmas with Zelda (and SB is lending me his copy of Elite Beat Agents), I might just erase EBA from my back up list and put Zelda GC in.

Are there any major differences between Zelda Wii and Zelda GC? I know the Wii version has better graphics, controls and a reversed world, but outside that, the games are identical, right?

Please let me know. I want to play Zelda TP during the Holidays, but don't want to wait for a Wii in order to play it.
