Rock out to Zelda music as you solve some nonograms.

Picross games are abundant on the 3DS, and lately, Nintendo’s taken to slapping themes on them. The free-to-play game Pokémon Picross took elements from the series and mixed it with the classic nonogram puzzle formula. My Nintendo Picross: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess doesn’t carry with it any neat gameplay twists inspired by Zelda. Really, all this My Nintendo bonus game does is give you about 100 new puzzles to complete while a Zelda song repeats on loop.

To me, that is a hell of an enticement, because Zelda music is fantastic, but it ultimately doesn’t make for that much of a Zelda twist. Midna does show up in a great tutorial, though, making Twilight Princess Picross one of the better entry points for this style of puzzle game. The controls and setup are very similar to the polished Picross e series, complete with button or stylus controls, a hint system, and the Micross and Mega Picross variations.

The biggest downside here is that the regular Picross puzzles and Mega Picross puzzles all make the same images. So while the puzzles for Wolf Link in both are unique, the picture you reveal at the end is identical. It doesn’t hurt the gameplay, but it does hurt the reward.

This is a Picross game condensed into a smaller wrapper than usual, but fortunately, it’s a pleasant Zelda wrapper. If you’re like me and the mere presence of a familiar Zelda tune is enough to make you smile, then Twilight Princess Picross might be a My Nintendo reward worth striving for. But if you’re swimming in other Picross games, this doesn’t add anything other than Midna and some token references.

I was actually disappointed by the music in the game.  The Hyrule Field arrangement that plays when you're solving puzzles has some instrument samples that are out of tune enough for me to find them horrendously grating when they kick in.  I had to keep the volume turned down when solving puzzles because of it.

Weird thing is, I asked a bunch of people about it, and only about half were also bothered by it.  The other half either didn't notice or didn't care.

This reminds me of when months and months after Guitar Hero 3 (?) released on the Wii they found out it was only putting out Mono sound. In all that time it was played millions of times and nobody noticed they hadn't been playing in Stereo.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.
