Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
« on: September 18, 2005, 08:28:24 AM »
All I can say after watching the trailer is: Holy scheisse. I might have to break my tradition of only buying Nintendo consoles/handhelds for that game. And Kojima proved it was in real-time, too.

(Please note that I've only played MGS:TTS. I'm a bad, bad person.)

Yeah, looks pretty amazing.  I was under the impression from the E3(?) video that Snake would be the main character.  But that looks like Big Boss to me.

Well, it's definitely Snake. The thing on his eye isn't an eyepatch, it's a little infra-red scanner radar thinger. Also, Otacon is in it, and he refers to Big Boss/Solid Snake as Snake. So it's pretty much assumable that this is Solid Snake. The reason he looks so much older than Otacon is because all of Big Boss's sons have accelerated aging.

I remember reading somewhere that you play as SOLIDUS snake. And that looks pretty impressive, I was already planning to buy a Rev first and then a PS3 sometime down the road. Also this is Kojima's last MGS game.

Umm stevey if you have an active braincell in your blind nintendo fanboy brain you should know the MGS 3.5 changes the camera perspective to 3rd instead of over view. Also as much as I love nintendo you do know there are other great products from its competition and other great games that companies offer to those consoles. But dont get me wrong Nintendo consoles have always been my primary console and Sony's consoles have always been secondary consoles to me. I never liked the Xbox and I wont like the Xbox360.

It just makes the franchise more of a movie... sorry, but I think MGS is too "cinematic" of a game for me to like it. In stealth games Thief beats MGS any time imo.

Thief bests MGS for stealth. But MGS is a tactical espionage pasteurized isometrical action shoot-'em. ;¬] Stu, you should give MGS3 a try. I dismissed it when I first learned about it (MGS in the jungle???//), but they really pulled it off. The graphics are great, despite being fairly 'PS2'. And the pacing is good, even with the extended--but not absurd--cutscenes. The exception being one very trying section riddled with load screens, which almost brought the game down for me. Then the end more than redeemed that part. You might want to wait for Subsistence if you're into the online thing, or if you need the free-moving camera.

I think it looks incredible.  I've never had another company's system and I doubt I'll get the PS3, but to think that the graphics could* really look like that, that's just amazing.

*I still have to see someone actually playing the game to be convinced that it really looks like that in motion, because I just can't believe that right now.

It's in-game but I'm not so impressed.

It doesn't look like a huge jump up graphically from MGS3. They've bastardized the metal gears, aged Snake to the point of drugs being needed and given him an annoying sidekick. I don't feel like playing with a coughing drug addict.

But who am I kidding, I'll find a way to play this somehow.

Galford, yeah I heard, that doesn't make him less annoying though.

From what I've heard the trailer has absolutely no visible polygons. If that's a trick or prerendered remains to be seen.

Well, as for MGS2+3, I admit that I really would like to play them. But it's just hard for me to give up my virginity to non-Nintendo systems. And anyway, I'm not exactly in the position to spend any money.... I need to save up to get a new graphics card so that I can play Oblivion on my computer!

As for polygons, I'll take a look at that.

And as for bastardizing METAL GEAR?!, believe it or not, these new Metal Gear models aren't new. I know for a fact that Metal Gear MkII was in Konami's Snatcher.

No visible polygons is a bit of an exaggeration. Perhaps on the lower quality feeds you couldn't make them out, but if you look at the hi-res screenshots you can see them pretty clearly. The video was definitely real-time, they manipulated it via a Dual Shock attached to the dev-kit it was running on.

Kojima is notorious for breaking the 'fourth wall'. At the end of the MGS2, characters in the game instructed you to turn the PS2 off and the MGS3 trailers had a GTA parody. That was just Kojima's quirky sense of humour.

MGS2+3 are absolutely essential playing. MGS3 is one of the best games of the current console generation.

Well done for noticing Metal Gear MkII, Kojima said himself during the TGS demo that they were indeed from Snatcher, which was another one of his games.

Alright look, I know it's from another game but I don't care, it's a bastardized Metal Gear.

I'm going to play this game anyway, but just let me have my nitpicks.

I'd love to play a MGS game to experience the story but I don't think I'd see much of the story when I give up after five minutes of playing.

I find that too often story games are way too much story and not enough game.  Metal Gear Solid is like this.  Once I finally get the hang of the game, and its pacing the game is over.  I would rather have longer more enjoyable games from gameplay then story.

And although Metal Gear Solid is a great series it takes so much time to jump into and play, it is almost too much work to enjoy.
