NWR Forums Discord / I'm suing NWR for discrimination....
« on: August 30, 2007, 05:42:31 AM »
...against fat people.

I first learned about the site's dislike of people with certain body sizes when the nipple art thread was deleted. The thread featured artistic depections of nude persons. The mods knew about the thread, and allowed it to continue...until I posted a work of art that featured unclothed females who happened to be overweight. The thread disappeared almost immediately after that.

The blatant discrimination NWR demonstrated that day disturbed me...however, I said nothing. But now I have no choice but to speak out, and take action. A far graver injustice has been committed. The Super Smash Bros. Brawl thread has been taken away from me, because the mods have learned of my girth.

General Gaming / 2d vs 3d
« on: August 10, 2007, 11:24:30 AM »
Should 2d games be more prevalent in the marketplace? There are hardly any genres that can't be done in 2d - action adventure games, platformers, fpses, racers, and rpgs all existed before polygons became popular. And many people argue that 2d games are often more beautiful, and have more charm, than their 3d counterparts.

Imagine if Nintendo poured millions of dollars into, and put their best artists and designers to work on, a 2d Zelda game for the Wii. Would that game be better than Twilight Princess? Would Twilight Princess have been better if it was 2d?

If you had asked me those questions two years ago, I would have answered them all with either "no" or "what the hell is a Wii?" I grew up on the N64 - I like 3d. But recently, I've found myself thinking that most games that come out these days are either dull-looking or downright ugly. And that maybe, 2d is due for a comeback.

NWR Feedback / I don't like epic threads.
« on: August 10, 2007, 10:44:29 AM »
They're annoying. I don't like wading through them. Sometimes they're necessary - having a big thread about Metroid Prime 3 in the Wii section is preferable to having 5,000 threads about Metroid Prime 3 in the Wii section. But there are some epic threads that exist that I wish didn't. Like the Wii sales thread - I think there should be a new Wii sales thread every week. And the Virtual Console thread - why not have a VC sub-forum, so that we could have a seperate thread for each VC game of note? And the updates thread in the new Smash Bros. subforum - I'd prefer a seperate thread for each update.

Agree/disagree?

Making a theme park that's themed like California in the middle of California was an incredibly dumb idea.

I was about to forgive Disney for making such a terrible park, but then I rode Space Mountain and found out that they ruined it.

Reader Reviews / Sam & Max Hit the Road
« on: June 07, 2007, 09:52:03 PM »
So look at what I scored on Ebay:

It's pretty good. Sam & max, I mean.

It's a 10-year-old Lucas Arts adventure game, which means you'll spend your time solving fiendish puzzles, while being entertained by witty jokes, and bizzare characters and locales.

You play as Sam, a dog. Your partner is Max, a "hyperkenitic rabbity thing". You're freelance police, on a mission to track down a sasquatch that's escaped from the carnival.

It took me a little while to get used to the pixelated graphics, and voices (I played Sam & Max: Season One before playing this. Hearing Sam & Max for the first time in this was like meeting an old friend who had stopped taking Prozac since the last time you saw him, if that makes sense. (I realize it probably doesn't make sense, because it's, like, four in the morning. I really need to go to bed.)) But once I did (get used to the graphics and voices), I found I was really enjoying myself. The dialog, animation, voice acting, and artwork are all superb. Oh, and the game is funny as hell.

I also enjoyed the puzzles, for the most part, once I got used to the game's twisted, cartoon logic. There were some puzzles that I could only solve by randomly trying objects on other objects....but, I didn't mind too much.

I enjoyed also how the game rewarded you for solving puzzles. You know how, in Zelda, after you solve a puzzle, you hear a chime, and a new area opens up? Well, in Sam & Max, you're generally rewarded with an elaborate, funny, animation.

I also liked how the game mainly satirizes real-life things. Season One went mostly went after things you see while you're sitting on your butt at home: talk show hosts, creepy spiritial leaders, video games, former child stars. Hit the Road goes after things you see while you're on vacation: kitschy tourist traps, chain stores.

So in conclusion, this game is great, and you should probably buy it. And then buy Sam & Max: Season one, because it's also fantastic. And then buy Season One again, when it comes out on Wii.

Score:

Nintendo Gaming / SUPER SMASH BROS BRAWL - The New Megathread
« on: May 24, 2007, 10:05:11 PM »
I'm not sure if many of you have heard of this game. It's apparently some kind of fighter, featuring characters from different videogame franchises. It's coming out December 3rd, 2007.

Here's some info about the characters, items, etc.:

------------------------------------------Characters!------------------------------------------

Bowser

Donkey Kong

Fox McCloud

Mario

Meta Knight

Pikachu

Pit

Samus - turns into Zero Suit Samus after performing her Final Smash

Zelda

------------------------------------------Items!------------------------------------------

Assist Trophies - they're like Pokeballs, except they contain characters from a wide variety of games.

Banana Peel

Cracker Launcher

Crates & Barrels

Gooey Bomb

Pitfall

Pokeballs

Smash Ball

Smoke Ball

Super Scope

------------------------------------------Stages!------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------Final Smashes!------------------------------------------

A final smash is a super powerful attack that you can only perform once per match, and only if you have a smash ball.

------------------------------------------Single Player!------------------------------------------

The Subspace Emissary is a "robust side-scrolling action game" that "also emphasizes character development."

------------------------------------------Controls!------------------------------------------

You can control Brawl with a Gamecube controller, or a classic controller, or a wiimote + nunchuck, or just a wiimote.

To preform a smash attack with the wiimote, you simultaneously press down on: a direction on the d-pad, the 1 button, and the 2 button.

------------------------------------------Music!------------------------------------------

Double S double B will feature music from tons of great composers.

A challenging, but very rewarding, activity that should be experienced by everyone.

-------------------Watching the sunset------------------------

There's nothing wrong with the sunset, per se. However, I find it hard to justify watching the sunset when, by skipping it and going to bed early, you could wake up in time to watch the sunrise, which is more beautiful.

I am in desperate need of this game. Should I:

- Buy a used copy of the original DOS game for $20-30
- Buy a never-opened copy of the Windows XP-compatible re-release for $20-$30.
- Download the game from an abandonware site.
- Get Grim Fandango instead
- Stop making illegal polls

General Chat / blogs
« on: April 30, 2007, 12:00:16 PM »
It took me awhile to get into them, these things called "blogs". I'm not that interested in political propaganda, or the mundane details of the every day lives of boring people. And, while blogs seem like they'd be good places to get news, I find it more convenient to get my real-world news from places like cnn.com and bbcnews.com, and my gaming news from various forums.

But then I found out there were blogs that featured the thoughts of interesting and famous people like Tim Schafer, Neil Gaiman, John Hodgman, and Infernal Monkey

Oh, and postsecret is pretty neat (but you already knew that.)
