Internet Explorer problem
« on: March 24, 2004, 07:32:02 AM »
When I click on "Internet Options" I get this
Quote

Restrictions
(X)
This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

Funny, I though I was the "system administrator" for my signle user PC.? I've had this problem for a while now and have made efforts to right my situation but alas I'm too dumb and Microsoft seems keen to have me suffer.
Im running win98SE(I keep win up to date).
I keep IE up to date also.
I have downloaded spyware/scumware in the past and have yet to completely purge it from my system(I'm sure there's a good chance that this has something to do with it).
I guess this is a two part question, second part being> how do I get scumware off my system. (scumware problem>When I right click on an internet window I get this great option
Quote

>>> FREE PORN GALLERIES <<<

also when I right click on some program icons I get this option
Quote

javascript:{document.location='http ://  www  .sexmaxx.com/freegalleries.htm';}

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I fear my tinkering is only making my problems worse

EDIT: spaces were added to dehyperlink the trashy link. But feel free to remove the spaces and use the link to get your own unremoveable scumware, CHILDREN WHO MAY BE READING THIS, THIS MEANS DON'T!

RE-EDIT:Ok spoiler text added, that's the best I can do. I need the broken address there for reference.

You might want to adjust your post, because if you are posting links to anything porn related you'll bound to get more trouble than help. I'm not going to go to that linke because I don't want the same problem happening to you, happening to me.

But I have never heard of scumware, I never had anything you mention happen to me.  I've had stuff magically appear on my desktop that I don't put there after being online, but nother like what you describe. So alas I can't help.  How about a spyware remover, like Spybot?  Have you tried that, or anything similar?

Here's what you do...

Get FireFox.

It'll stop just about all of those kinds of things.  For removing "scumware" (better-known as spyware/adware) from your computer, get Ad-aware 6.0.

That should help you out.

I assume you mean for future protection.

As for Ad-aware and Spybot, I run them regularly and keep them up-to-date.

If you Spybot and Adaware it, it could either be something more sinister like a trojan (update the antiviruses and scan just to be safe) or just IE has been fizzucked on your system.

Updating it by Windows Update may solve the problem temporarily, but in the long term Firefox is a brilliant alternative - its really like comparing an umbrella to a bomb shelther for protection.

HijackThis! is a program that makes a log of common file locations that might be used by scumware, and can effectively kill those programs, if you know what to look for. Email me if you want to try it (mreimer9 @ yahoo .com) , or try getting help at http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

Hijack This can produce a lot of "harmless data". If you blast everything it shows your system might stop working. They have a list somewhere what's legit and what not.
If Spybot doesn't find it, it's CoolWebSearch. I don't have the link ready, but there's a specialized removal tool for that thing (since CWS can irreparably destroy your Windows' internet connection).

I keep Windows, IE, and my antivirus(McAfee) up to date. Though I could upgrade my AV engine I guess(4.0.70 / 4.1.60) doesn't seem necessary without a full numerical change though.

Also I've submitted this thread to both Spybot & Adaware, I guess I should submit it to McAfee too.

Lastly thanx for all the replies thus far.

I downloaded HijackThis from your link(2x) and everything seemed fine until I tried to run it, then I got this error message

I had a problem similar to this. You can read about it in This thread.

I was able to solve the problem with the adult links toolbar, however IE seems to maybe have been corrupted from this as I still get redirected to "the page cannot be displayed" page.  I just decided to switch over to Firefox, which has been working flawlessly. I highly suggest it for all IE users because it is just that amazing.

I got these error shortcut popups on my computer talking about.  Something like MORZE0, 133000PJ, T1NK03, etc I keep using my ad-aware and it gets rid of it but more just comes and it keeps changing my IE homepage.  Damn IE.

[Flukeworm:] Try downloading and installing this file:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb60pro/Redist/sp5/WIN98ME/EN-US/vbrun60sp5.exe

If that fixes it, remember not to have HT fix everything, since most of what it finds isn't harmful.

And yeah, I <3 Mozilla. Has anyone used the Adblock extension? It does it a great job of blocking annoying banners, for me anways.
