If reviews are any indication, Geist didn't sell well because it wasn't a good game. Plus it was released late in the GameCube's life, very little games sold at that point.

Yeah, that's my take on it as well.  I know Geist is popular here for some reason, but I owned that game back on GCN and it really wasn't very good in spite of its ambition.

Aside from the Wii series of games (which are something new that were at least a calculated risk no matter how much some people don't like them), Nintendo have three new franchises on Wii in North America: Endless Ocean, the Art Styles games, and the upcoming FlingSmash. They also revived Punch-Out!! and brought Sin and Punishment to North America. The problem isn't that they aren't creating new IP, it's that many aren't being released in North America. Japan has Captain Rainbow, Takt of Magic, XenoBlade, and Zangeki no Reginleiv, and Europe has Disaster: Day of Crisis. The Last Story will probably soon be on the list too. I've no idea why Nintendo doesn't want to try these games in North America.

Ah, knew I forgot something.  The Endless Ocean series is so casual I tend to forget it's not part of the Wii ______ series.  I forget, but isn't the Art Styles franchise DSiWare not a Wii product?  As for FlingSmash, I know little about the game except that it's one of the few Nintendo games to use the MotionPlus.  And yeah, I don't know why Nintendo is being so stingy with bringing its new Nintendo-published titles from Japan over here, especially the RPGs (which the Wii is sorely lacking in).

Quote
Personally, it doesn't matter to me whether a game is an old or new IP; as games like Battalion Wars, Metroid Other M, and Kirby Epic Yarn have shown, Nintendo will experiment within its franchises. At the end of the day, a good game is a good game.

Agreed.  Battalion Wars and Epic Yarn don't appeal to me, but it's good to see Nintendo experimenting with new ideas.  Likewise with Other M, though I enjoyed that game despite its issues.  Man, this really is the year for decades-old fans of established franchises to have to challenge their preconceptions (or just whine about them, as we've seen), between FF XIII; Metroid Other M; and Castlevania.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

Actually, Art Style might have started on DSiWare, I'm not sure. But it is at least a new IP for this generation, and some of the games are on Wii. Also, I looked it up, and Takt of Magic is a sequel to Lost Magic, so it would also fall under "new IP for this generation" and not for Wii.

The Art Style series began on WiiWare, but there are a lot more of them on DSiWare, including, in my opinion, most of the best ones.

Yeah, that's my take on it as well.  I know Geist is popular here for some reason, but I owned that game back on GCN and it really wasn't very good in spite of its ambition.

The reason it is brought up so often is because it is the last real example of a brand new hardcore franchise created by Nintendo. It was launched in the last days of the GC and its about 5 or so years old now, but it remains the last true example of a hardcore IP by Nintendo on a Nintendo console, and that's the problem. Sure, Endless Ocean is a new IP but I consider that casual like the Wii-____ titles. Even though 3rd parties have mostly crapped on or ignored the Wii, they've given some cool new IPs like Red Steel and No More Heroes, Madworld, Conduit, to name a few. So its a weird thing to say this, but when it comes to introducing new hardcore IPs the 3rd parties are actually doing a better job of that than Nintendo is, because while Nintendo makes far better games overall, the stuff they make all involves characters that were established long before the Wii launched.

Sure, Geist might have been a mediocre or bad game, but its the last time Nintendo tried. Its like someone who does something half ass and then it fails and they're like "well, at least I gave it a try" and then just gave up, but that's not how it should be. Imagine if Nintendo had that attitude back in 1985.
is your sanity...

Let's not pretend that, if other companies had franchises as successful as Nintendo's, they wouldn't make sequel and spin-off after sequel and spin-off. They have no choice but to introduce new IP and hope they find success. Also, the games you mentioned are all rated T-M, which Nintendo doesn't really make. So if those are examples of "hardcore" games, Nintendo have never made "hardcore" games.

Are you trying to tell me these are all casual games? Sure, quite a few are Japan-only, but clearly, Nintendo is still trying.

How 'bout that? I didn't realise that historically, Kirby games have had good opening sales and respectable lifetime numbers in Japan.

As for Donkey Kong Country Returns, I'm expecting it to sell fairly well, though I don't know how much will be accredited to New Super Mario Bros owners. At least in the West, the Donkey Kong Country name is held in high regard, and at the Japanese conference last month, DKCR was the only American-developed game shown, so they might promote it more over there.

The Donkey Kong Country series was huge in Japan back in the day as well.  The first DCK sold around 3 million copies in Japan and was Nintendo's 3rd best selling SNES game over there.  Not to mention the sequel sold 2.2 million copies and was Nintendo's 4th best selling SNES game.  Donkey Kong Country 3 managed to sell 1.7 million copies.  Hell, even Donkey Kong 64 sold over 1 million copies in Japan as well.

After NSMBW success in Japan just a year ago, I'll honestly be shocked if DKCR doesn't manage to at least do 1.5 million copies.  Considering most of Donkey Kong's fanbase on the SNES was made up of Mario fans, since NSMBW was able to bring a lot of the older Mario fans back, I'd be shocked if a large amount of them don't buy DCKR, since they loved the series enough to buy all 3 games back on the SNES which caused them to also buy DK64 as well.

Just when I thought the Wii would be doomed, they have the perfect timing for the new bundle with NSMBW, etc. I expect Wii to be back in 1st place for the next few months.

I'm sure the new bundle will give some sort of boost to Wii sales. But the problem is the bundle is only a short term fix. Nintendo can boost hardware sales by releasing fancy new colors and bundling existing games only to an extent. Nintendo can shuffle around its existing A+ titles to help for the holiday season, but what happens when consumers had their fill of them and want something different? This is yet another example of the Wii riding its success off a small handful of highly popular games.

Media Create - Kirby Comparison

03/24/00   [N64]   Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards   (Nintendo)   -   337.035   /   927.269
08/23/00   [NGB]   Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble   (Nintendo)   -   200.190   /   507.252
10/25/02   [GBA]   Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land   (Nintendo)   -   213.300   /   585.700
07/11/03   [GCN]   Kirby Air Ride   (Nintendo)   -   79.700   /   278.500
04/15/04   [GBA]   Kirby & the Amazing Mirror   (Nintendo)   -   188.837   /   736.226
03/24/05   [NDS]   Kirby Canvas Curse   (Nintendo)   -   75.365   /   310.251
11/02/06   [NDS]   Kirby Squeak Squad   (Nintendo)   -   166.131   /   1.144.490
11/06/08   [NDS]   Kirby Super Star Ultra   (Nintendo)   -   265.654   /   1.157.813
10/14/10   [WII]   Kirby's Epic Yarn   (Nintendo)   -   92.280   /   92.280

These Kirby comparisons aren't entirely valid, in my opinion.  If you look at that list, and take away the portable Kirby titles and simply examine Kirby's console counterparts, namely Air Ride and K64, you are left with sales numbers that can't be taken at face value.  In 2000 and 2003, games were very different - the market was different, the standards were different, and quite frankly GAMERS were different.  In 2000, games, typically, weren't selling 1.5 million copies within their first week of release (i.e. the newest Medal of Honor).  At the turn of the decade, that number would have been absolutely staggering.  Nowadays, we expect to see those numbers because of the influx in those who play games and also the genre in which the majority of gamers tend to favor.

KEY has been released at one of the strangest times in gaming history.  It's been released on a console that is far too often overlooked by most of the gaming populace, it has adopted 2D graphics (albeit the graphics and art style are top notch) at a time where a game is heavily praised for boundary-pushing 3D graphics, and, in a world where 20+ hours is normal game-length, it is short but priced at the standard $50.  With that being said, Kirby, relative to its time, has sold really well.  When I see sales numbers or people who want to prove that the game ISN'T selling well (mind you, I'm not saying that's what anyone here is trying to do here), I can't help but shake my head in disappointment at the fact that people are failing to take into consideration a wealth of extraneous variables that have undeniable effects on a game's sales performance.

That aside, I'm interested in seeing how Kirby has faired here in the states as the initial numbers I've seen have been pretty impressive.

Last I checked most games are in the 6-8 hour bracket while costing 60$.

If I'm not mistaken, Modern Warfare 2 sold a whopping 9,000 or so copies on the PS3 in Japan in its first week of release by Square-Enix.  Medal of Honor, a game that's even more pro-American and was localize by a Western company, actually sold more in Japan?   :confused;   I'm just astonished.

MW2 also came out a year ago and the PS3 has been selling a lot more this year than it had previously been selling. So...it makes total sense.

Agreed. The PS3 has built up a lot of momentum, and it is consistently outselling the Wii in Japan. It now has 10 games on the charts which is amazing compared to where it was a year or more ago.

I'm not going to say the Wii "is doomed" but clearly Nintendo needs to be trying harder than it has to date. It seems like they've been slacking since day one with getting Wii games developed and released, but that strategy isn't working anymore. The quality of Wii games is there, but the quantity is not...

Super Mario Collection sold more than Kirby Epic Yarn and Metroid Other M combined. I hope Nintendo doesn't get the wrong impression from this...

The Wii has the same number of Nintendo-published retail titles as the GameCube after four years, and it has a lot more if you include WiiWare. Look harder.
