Ice Cream Surfer Review

One of the most colorful shoot ’em ups to ever grace the Wii U.

Ice Cream Surfer starts things off on a rather correct note, because it immediately lets you know that the game is crazy. The story about how an evil broccoli mastermind has its mind set on taking over the Flavor Universe. Now you will have to join a selection of colorful freedom fighters and stop the Evil Vegetables!

While delightfully insane, the game is a bit problematic is that there are just six levels. This could be excused if the game had any kind of leaderboard, but the Miiverse community is sadly the only form of online competition available. Fortunately the game does feature five playable characters, each with their own set of attacks. Ace is perfect for the shoot 'em up beginner, while Sailor Twister can only be recommended for the players with a solid grasp on the genre. It helps that the game is really fun to replay and will take you 20 to 40 minutes depending on your skills. Next to this, you can play it together with a friend in co-op, which also adds to the replay value.

Two bigger problems come on the technical side of things. The framerate does take a hit once in a while, which can cause issues in a game that demands precision. The second problem is only present in the European version and the developer, Dolores Entertainment, is doing everything to fix it. At random intervals at the final boss, your victory will somehow not count and you will get an instant game over screen. This is endlessly frustrating for those trying to set a high score to put online. I can only recommend that the European players wait until this nasty bug is resolved, because it can seriously hurt the overall enjoyment of the adventure.

Ice Cream Surfer is a fun little shoot'em up, and is both wonderful to look at and play. With only six levels it is a short adventure, though the game is really playable. It is sad that online leaderboards were not included as it would have rounded out the experience nicely. Bugs aside, the creativity of the title does shine through.

I seriously get something between Adventure Time and Parodius from this game.  The presentation creates an odd desparity with how awesome the art assets are and how good the game looks still, and how actually sort-of wonky it looks in motion.
