Episode 78: Lesson of Engrish
« on: August 14, 2010, 03:39:19 AM »

Genki, zany, and slightly irritating: It's Radio Trivia! Featuring special guest Andy Goergen.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/radiotrivia/23865

Games featured in this episode:

Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES)
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg (GC)
The Simpsons: Bart’s Nightmare
Shining Force II: The Ancient Seal

(Highlight the text above with your cursor to view it.)

Did you like the third and fourth games? Let your fellow listeners know in TalkBack! Think you've got a better choice? Then send it my way and your request might be on the next episode of Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition!  Heck, throw in a question and specific songs if you want.  Just remember, it has to be a game found on a Nintendo system in North America (unless we say otherwise)!

I'm roughly halfway through listening to the episode. I've figured out all three games so far (hurrah!)... well, technically I don't know if I've guessed Game 3 correctly, but there's only one game I know with so much incessant whistling.

Zelda II was one of my all time favorite games.  I hope Nintendo makes another game in the same style one day, even if they subtitle it as a Zelda spin-off series.

But are you sure the songs are correct?  The 1st and 3rd songs in particular sound like remixes.

It's been a while, but something sounds a little off.

No, those are not remixes, although it's possible the sound emulation could be slightly off. (I remember reading in passing a claim that the vibrato in this game isn't always emulated perfectly, but I also know the Famicom Disk System version has a much less absurd vibrato as well.) It's also possible you're thinking of other tracks from this game--the first is the credits song, and the third is from the final temple...which has different music from the other temples.

Just be thankful I cut "G.I.A.N.T.E.G.G." short.
I hear the A in the clip at the end; were you referring to something else?

The first several times, the A is missing, as if the kids are trying to figure out the word... then what sounds like an older male kid corrects the younger ones by adding in the A, though with an irregular meter.  G-I-A,N-T-E-G-G

I hear that kid say "eh-n", but I could see that being a bizarro "A". Anyway, I didn't edit that portion. I was referring to the actual song which I cut short.

So funny story from me while playing along with this episode.

When Mario Sunshine was on, I just knew it screamed GameCube platformer to me but I just assumed you had to have used Sunshine and discounted my hunch.  So, in order to come up with a guess I went with another GameCube platformer even though I had never played it, and thought up Billy Hatcher.

Then, to my surprise, Billy Hatcher was actually used later on. :)

I recognized the first two games almost instantly but they were the only ones I guess correctly. Oh well, it's always fun to listen to this show.  ;D
This is where I would write something witty or funny if I had any ideas.

Cool to see a game I requested be used (the fourth one). I never bought the game, but I rented it a couple of time as a kid from Wegmans (a northeast grocery store chain) and enjoyed it. I never got close to beating it though.

I achieved my personal best:  5 points!

I got Sunshine but missed the bonus question because I didn't know the name of the level.
I got Zelda II but I'm only giving myself a half point because the teaser at the end of RFN 207 spoiled it and then I got the bonus question.
I didn't get Billy Hatcher but I knew it was a Sega game, so I'm giving myself a half point.
Didn't get anything for Bart's Nightmare but then I got both the game and bonus question for Shining Force II.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I almost always miss the more popular games because I fall into that same trap. Then you hear the answer, and you are amazed that TYP found another Castlevania game! Obviously not the answer for this one, but you get my point :)
Bless you, my child.
