Max became irrelevant after RE4 came out on GameCube.  What's he got now besides new standards of fashion?

I don't think Resident Evil 4 had anywhere near the destruction inherent in any max Payne level. Furthermore, the gimmicks of bullet-time and film noir comic transitions helped to set it apart. It's just too bad that the second game wasn't very good. Still, Max Payne aims and handles a helluva lot easier than Leon Kennedy could ever hope to, even with the Wii-mote... Hell, even with a mouse and keyboard in that horrid port that Capcom threw onto the PC.

Max Payne was the Crisis of its day, leap years ahead of any other graphics engine. The new character model and settings of this sequel seem to have very little to do with Max Payne.
