Famitsu has released market-data on first-half-2005 hardware and software sales in Japan. The stats show a 1.8 tie-ratio for Sony's PSP and a 1.9 tie-ratio for Nintendo's DS, with both machines selling similar numbers.

Since launch, the report says, 1.5 million PSPs and 2.65 million software units have been shipped to stores. The top-selling PSP game is Minna no Golf, with sales of 232,000 copies. Nintendo has sold through to customers 2.3 million DS units, and 440,000 DS games. Its top seller is Nintendogs, with sales of 495,000 copies.

Over the last six months, though, PSP numbers closed in on the DS, with 1.1 to the DS's 1.2 million units.

In the market overall, the magazine's 100 top-selling titles for the first half of 2005 include 17 from Nintendo, 12 from Namco, and 10 each from Sony and Konami. Square Enix and Bandai each have 7.

A chart of game publishers, ranked by copies sold, features Nintendo at the top, with 3.1 million copies; Sony second, with 2 million; and Namco and Square Enix tied for third, with around 1.5 million each.

In the first half of the year, a total of 24.4 million game software units were sold, down from 28.3 million over the same period last year.
I think this is the info you were looking for, even though it looks a little inaccurate.

"Nintendo has sold through to customers 2.3 million DS units, and 440,000 DS games. Its top seller is Nintendogs, with sales of 495,000 copies."  does that seem a little off to you too? Are they missing a '0'? if the tie ratio is 1:2 it would appear that they missed a zero .

and why are they comparing Sony's 'shipped' to Nintendo's 'sold'?

Maybe Sony hasn't released the numbers of PSP's sold?

I'm kind of confused how Nintendogs alone sold 495,000 when total game sales were supposedly 440,000?

The Famitsu must be off, because the DS has regained over a million unit lead and is growing weekly.

So that's a 700 thousand unit lead just in the past six months? Or all time? Huh?

Eh?

"Over the last six months, though, PSP numbers closed in on the DS, with 1.1 to the DS's 1.2 million units."

These are the figures for the last six months. Before that, the DS already had a million lead, but the PSP started selling and cut into that million lead. A few weeks ago, the DS regained the million lead with its consistently good sales. So over the last six months it has a lead of 100k, and before that it had roughly a million more. Therefore, the DS is in the lead by about 1.1 million units.

I assume it would be to make Sony look better.  Sony rarely uses true sales.  They always tend to use shipping numbers to sound more impressive.

Not to "Joe Average" who only quickly reads through it and figures that the two figures are close, instead of them measuring two differents things. Not only that, but it makes the entire first part bull $^&*, and obviously in favor of Sony.

1.8 tier vs. 1.9 tier? Yeah, I guess, except the 1.8 Sony "tier" is simply how many games have been shipped to stores compared to systems, instead of how many games have been sold compared to systems like is being done with the DS data there.

Media Create July 4th - Jul 10th

Software:
1. Sakura Taisen V (Sega, PS2): 111,771
2. Yawaraka Atamajuku(Easy Brain Training?) (Nintendo, DS): 75,156 (147,812)
3. Minna Daisuki Katamari Damacy (Namco, PS2): 61,455
4. Musashiden II (Square Enix, PS2): 57,916
5. Mushiking (Sega, GBA): 41,370 (308,521)
6. Gundam True Odyssey (Bandai, PS2): 37,653 (123,643)
7. Otona no DS Training (Nintendo, DS): 28,792 (274,939)
8. Kenranbutosai (SCE, PS2): 27,928
9. Genji (SCE, PS2): 24,156 (94,239)
10. Star Wars Episode III (EA, PS2): ~20,000

Hardware:
DS: 41,503 (1,112,952)
PS2: 28,711 (1,128,763)
PSP: 20,711 (1,020,458)
GBASP: 11,176 (401,927)
GC: 2,273 (127,226)
GBA: 289 (14,025)

Xbox: 179 (8,185)

DS more than doubes the PSP sales (barely) for that week, falling just 8,000 sales shy of equaling all Sony system sales, Mushiking has sold over 300,000+, both Brain Training non-games are still in the top 10 & are  selling more this week than they did last week!!

an overall good week in Nintendo camp

DS: 41,503 + GBASP: 11,176 + GC: 2,273 + GBA: 289 = 55,241
PS2: 28,711 + PSP: 20,711 = 49,422
55,241 - 49,422 = 5,819 in Nintendo's favor

I don't know if this is all peaches n cream...glad the sales are good, yet I'm like BlacknMild I'm a bit bitter that the non-games have seen such scintillating success yet the cool "regular" games have not.

Famicom Wars...Trauma Center...Goemon...where art thou? According to Famitsu you were all excellent to good games. And the system is selling like hotcakes. Where are the sales?

Famicom Wars has never been popular in Japan (the GBA series) so that's no surprise.

Yea, 'cuz that's a real "traditional, regular game"

And Famicom Wars isn't really appealing to Japan, as pointed out.

Wait for some other of these "traditional" games; I guarantee they will sell well. Look at Jump already.

Sometimes review score =\= game quality.  Case in point, Armored Core: Formula Front.  I cannot fathom how anybody at Famitsu could have enjoyed that game enough to give it a score above 6.  This isn't a personal issue.  Formula Front you don't even play.  You tell your robot what to do and they fight FOR you.  It was less a game and more a movie.  I guess having actual input into the combat would have drained the PSP battery or something.

As for Goemon, well...  They may have just not liked it.

Naw man, thats just how Goemon does in Famitsu. They ain't too hot on Goemon generally.
If anything, thats ENCOURAGING, coming from Famitsu...apparently the game is a bit short as well, unfortuneately.

Yea, I'm not quite understanding where folks are getting the "Famicom Wars is not popular in Japan" idea...if anything, the fact that the game series has survived and continued to spawn since the days of the famicom would seem to indicate it does well enough for itself over there...

It certainly has garnered an excited following in America tho.

Check the sales data for both Advance Wars and AW 2 in Japan and you'll see exactly where we are coming from.
