More Sonic Goodness but....
« on: September 09, 2005, 06:57:35 PM »
I didn't know if this warrants its own seperate topic, but here it is anyway.

Read it and weep; or bitch whatever comes first

For the lazy, here are some snippets(Somewhat old news, but new info):

"First up was the announcement that yes indeed, there is a next-generation Sonic game in the works. Billed as a "re-invention" of the classic franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog will make its debut on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime during 2006."

Now add insult to injury:

"We are proud to re-create our famous friend, Sonic, for a new generation of gamers on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," said Naka. "With Sonic the Hedgehog, we have gone back to our starting point, more than 15 years ago, to reinvent the attitude and speed that made our hero a legend. The 'rebirth of Sonic' will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by the new systems."

Good for Sonic, bad for Nintendo where he's done the best.

Now lets see: Sonic has the best sales figures on Nintendo's system. SA2 was one of the top selling 'Cube games period. The Sonic Advance series was great (Try comparing Sonic N to Sonic Advance to jog your memory..). Sonic Heroes sold the best on the 'Cube (despite mixed reviews from critics and fans alike), even being the 'best' version. And now this crap? Now Sega's lack of business sense has been well documented, but this is low. This stupidity is painful.

Now before someone says "What about RE 5? It wasn't announced for the Rev at first?", remember that the RE series left a sour taste in both Nintendo's and Capcom's mouth. As of this writing, it MAY come out for the Rev, but that's another story. This is Sega, who's done pretty well on Nintendo's systems. The money and sales should be talking, instead, more disrespect.  Its like the Soul Calibur 3 debacle all over again...

Now it could be possible that Sega could announce a REV version later, but that's not the point.  This is the upmteenth time I'm hearing press releases for Next-Gen games announced for the '360 and PS3. Its like the REV is an anti-hype machine. Its like they can't bother to mention from the get go. Its as if REV need to get down their knees and beg for 3rd party games so far.

P.S Now to be fair, I'll throw a bone to Nintendo since they might have NDA's so airtight, Devs and Publishers can't really talk about specific titles as of this writing. Take that as you will.

I didn't see anywhere that explicitly says the game won't be coming out for Revolution.

NDAs about games still make no sense to me whatsoever; controllers and features are one thing, but to make it look like no game is going to come out is maddening.

First off, this will almost certainly come to revolution.

Second off, It makes sense to keep rev games a secret - the less we know, the bigger the impact of the eventual rev unveiling.

Third off, I WANT to doubt this game....but just look at it. So beautiful....

I dream the same thing (but replaced ps3 & 360 with revolution) a week ago O_O freeky.

I hope this mean they gone back to the root so there be no voice over, cawful music, bad line, horrible controls, unneedly long talking, a terrible camera, bad voices acting, crappy levels, stupid fvm with talking, you cant become super sonic til the end, unskipable fmv and voices line, every thing in sonic hero, and dont forget get the fruity line sonic say; so than it be the best 3d sonic game ever.

When I read the story on IGN yesterday, I couldn't help but remember Yuji Naka's quote about how impressed he was with the Revolution.  Perhaps Nintendo's NDAs do have slap "upside" the head if you say too much.  Although the sales figures for GCN for Sonic games has been better this generation than on the other platforms, it makes perfect business sense for Sega to want to go ahead and debut a Sonic game at the beginning of the next generation system's life cycle.  If it does better on the Revolution in the next generation and Sega keeps releasing Sonic on a multiplatform basis, then we can begin to question them.

If anything, I'd be more worried that Yuji Naka didn't announce Sonic for the Revolution because it is severely underpowered and he wanted some horsepower to keep Blue Blur alive and well for years to come much like Resident Evil 4 did for Shinji Mikami.

Does anyone have a Mikami or Flagship quote for the Revolution?

If they are reinventing Sonic they may go back to just Sonic, or perhaps just Sonic and Tails.  Really, that is what I would do.  Sonic and Tails were cool...Knuckles kinda cool.  Almost every other character in the game not cool.

Also, why did Sega have to continue to make the exact same villian over and over again.  They had the cool RoboSonic that fit with whole theme of Sonic, but then ditched him for Shadow...a hyper version of RoboSonic, and not nearly as cool.

I would love theme to go way back to classic universe Sonic.

Like Mega Man.  Mega Man has an amazing and cool universe.  Mega Man X ruins it by making it hype and trying to cut some of the silliness from the series...that silliness made the universe fun.

Tails really opened up the gameplay and allowed Sega to do some interesting things.  Tails was one of the first characters in a platformer with a default ability to fly (no special power needed)

I would love a game the really creates a traditional Sonic experience, and then a well rounded experience with Tails that opens up the levels and experience to be unique.

And stop this Tails is an inventor stuff.  That was stupid.  Tails should be tails...a slower version of Sonic that can fly.

Go back to the basic theme of Technology verse nature, and drop all voice acting and unneccessary characters.

Sonic is a timeless character.
Tails is an even better character (design wise)
Knuckles-Not so Much.
Shadow-Real stupid.
Robo-Sonic very cool, and fits that theme.  He looked scary too.

Everything else is fluff in the series and could be gotten rid off.

But Tails has always been an inventor...He made the plane that he flies in Sonic 2!  It's just that there wasn't a real story behind it...

Bill:  Ok.  I can deal with that...then just don't put it into the actual gameplay of the game.  I didn't remember the plane in Sonic 2, so I wouldn't remember Tails building it.

It didn't play apart in the game which was the most important thing.

"Sonic Goodness"

...

Am I the only gamer who has NEVER liked Sonic? I even bought the Mega Collection for the GameCube (I missed the originals since I had a Nes/SNES, and NONE of the games were 'good' in my opinion, just running aroung 'really' fast while avoiding enemies, until you get to the end, or get killed. The only game that I play is "Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine" or something, which I think was Puyo Pop (and I LOVE Puyo Pop Fever for my DS ).

*Note: I've never played the 3D Sonic games. But by the comments on the board, I shouldn't even bother.

Toruresu:  After the Mario series Sonic was the best platformer during the 16 bit era.  It wasn't even close to being as good as Mario...but it did have intense boss battles, a complete working theme, and pretty good character design.  Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 are probably the purest games from the franchise, though most argue Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles are much better.

I never got to play Sonic CD, but supposedly they really changed that game into an exploration game, and less about speed.  How much that worked depends on your tastes.

Personally I played Sonic 1 and 2 and found them too easy, but still enjoyable.  In fact the only levels that weren't enjoyable were the underwater levels, because they felt rather cheap in their design.  (I hate dying in games because I couldn't make it from point A to point B fast enough.)

Sonic is also remembered as one of the first video game character to engage the player.  He had "attitude" and didn't want to sit around.  That "attitude" started a trend for idle animation and more expressive animation in general, which really wasn't present that much in the Mario games...though that could be debated.

Overall, Sonic is more popular because of its place in video game history and not that its games were exceptional perfect examples of platforming goodness.

That was exactlly my thought, so I went ahead and bought the collection. I wanted to give Sonic a chance, and now I feel sorry for the Sega fans that never played Mario, and proud of myself for not being 'cool enough for Sonic' back in the Snes days.

Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic and Knuckles are the best Sonic games, and they all rawk.  However, playing them on the GC just isn't the same, and that's not just because of the different controller.  It just doesn't feel the same as playing them on a Genesis..  Playing the originals on the Genesis is awesome, playing them on the GC is merely 'good.'

Plus, it's lol when you stack the Genesis, the 32X, Game Genie, Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic 2 (or 3).  It's a hundred million inches tall.

I don't really have a problem with the 3D Sonics.  I've only played Sonic Adventure 2  Awesome Battle Party or whatever they called it, but it was pretty fun.  I liked the focus on action rather than collecting and exploration during the Sonic missions.  Not as good as Super Mario Sunshine, no doubt, but above average.

I'd like to play Sonic Mega Collection, but I've never gotten around to it.
