TalkBack / Re: Metroid: Other M Review
« on: May 22, 2012, 12:07:24 PM »
I agree.  This game isn't that bad.  The graphics are some of best on Wii, the combat controls are a little clunky, but the story really isn't terrible.  It'd give it maybe a 8/10.  Not to good by Metroid game standards, but it's still pretty good.

Retro needs to make a new version of other M, add analog controls, and scanning.  The prime games where incredible

TalkBack / Re: Castlevania: Mirror of Fate Set for an E3 Unveiling
« on: May 22, 2012, 01:00:07 AM »
For me, that means following from part of the original timeline.  The reboot borrowed to heavily from other games and not enough from other CVs.

Considering Castlevania was founded on "borrowing too heavily" from the works of others (originally, Western myths and Western horror movie monsters.  Later, from Metroid when Konami ran out of ideas), I don't put much stock in the "not enough Castlevania!" complaint when Lords of Shadow basically followed the same path the original game and Super Castlevania IV (which the devs have said was a direct influence) did.  There are aspects of the gameplay I'd have liked tightened-up and Gabriel's character arc could have been much better conveyed, but I found the mythology of the world displayed in that game quite interesting.  It's not a traditional Castlevania to be sure with its lack of heavy electronic music, but what was there felt relatively fresh and interesting (and I thought the music was quite lovely, if very ambient).

Considering all the emphasis Konami put on rebooting the franchise with Lords of Shadow (which was a reasonably successful game), I hope they have the strength of their convictions to stick with this timeline from here on out until the franchise inevitably needs to be rebooted again.  Otherwise, what was the point?

As for Mirror of Fate, I also think the franchise is due for a more "classic" 2D sidescroller approach, rather than yet another game ripping off the Metroid formula (which was cute back when we hadn't had a Metroid game in nearly a decade, but got old after the franchise made its return with the Prime games).  I also hope this isn't a return to the yearly installment formula that drove the franchise into the ground in the first place.

I never really thought Castlevania was original.  Alucard's castle? I'm sorry that's about as generic a vampire setting gets, IMO.  It was always like Metroid, that's just how it was. On the topic of gameplay, I think instead of a classic style, they should try to make a next gen 2D game.  I really haven't seen any developer try to push hardware when working on a sidescroller and I think that CastleVania would be a perfect fit.  They could combine aspects from the 2D and 3D games. as long as the art style remains I'd be all for it.

As for, the topic of over releasing...I really don't see that as a problem.  The games differ in settings and are all different.  Gameplay changes are minimal but the area's you explore feel fresh and the main game is usually pretty long.   We haven't seen a portable Castlevania game in about four years, I'm all for Konami making three games during the 3DS's life.  As long as there different.

Golden Sun 3DS (God I love that game)

New Super Mario Bros. 2

Metroid For 3DS/Wii U

New StarFox for 3DS (I think that game works better as a handheld)

Paper Mario 3DS (I've been waiting two years Nintendo)

Monolithsofts Wii U and 3DS games (Xenoblade was awesome)

Zelda for 3DS (No remakes.  Remakes are rude)

Pikmin 3

Super Smash bros. 4.

@Ninsage

Man, I couldn't agree more.  We need more 2D hand-drawn games,  like RayMan Origins.  I really wish more games developers would do the same like for Mario.

Is that QR code only valid with NSTC-U Mario Tennis? If so that's really confusing on Nintendo's part.

I have like 10 of these cards and I don't even have the game yet.

@Ninsage

That would be amazing, I remember playing 3D classic Kid Icarus on my friends system and it looked really awesome.  I just hope the art style stays the same as the DS and GBA games.  I mean polygons are fine for backgrounds, but me as a hardcore 2D sprite enthusiast prefer the older arts on character models.  I also hope that the gameplay isn't to stuck in the last generation.  The 3DS is roughly as powerful as the Wii so they should build the game design with a console in mind.

The same problem comes to mind when I think about New Super Mario Bros. 2, I hope it's not a retro throwback again.  If Mario makes another old school 2D Game it won't even be retro anymore, just redundant and uninspired.  Hopefully EAD Tokyo are making it, and taking ideas from the Galaxy games.

Guess will just have to wait two weeks to find out.   Don't fail us now Nintendo...

General Gaming / Re: Anyone have Sonic 4: Episode 2?

Played the XBox version.  It was okay.  The graphics where kind of lackluster and the sound effects where aggravating.  Other than that, I was a lot better than the first episode.

North America will never get this game.  This are the two things that make me think that.

1. It's far to graphic.  NoA Would never publish a game where's you main motivation is feeding your girlfriend demon hearts.  This game would possibly be rated M by ESRB.
(weird, though, it's only 12+ in Europe.  Even the Japanese version was higher)

2. It's not critically acclaimed enough and most Operation RainFall goers have seemed to forgotten it after The Last Story was announced.  Not to mention this game has no gimmick or mainstream appeal.

That said, I still really want to play this game.  This was the first OP Rainfall game I knew about, and the premise looks really awesome, plus this review makes me want it even more. :)

I liked the GBA games, and Order of Ecclesia on DS.  I see them as sizable 2D Metroid substitutes.  I wonder how the 3D effect would be emplimented, that would be interesting.

If this is as good as the older ones, I might seriously have to invest in a 3DS.

I'm glad Konami knows how to get there stuff localized (I'm looking at you Nintendo of America) So we won't have to wait a insane amount of time to play stuff that everywhere else already has. > . >

This could be really awesome.  I haven't played a good Metroid game in a while (Other M was a disgrace. "Concentrate" for missiles...wtf Nintendo?) And lord knows that StarFox hasn't had a new home console release in ages.  Retro seems perfect for this job, as both franchises are more "western" orientate then most franchises from Nintendo.  Retro did a excellent job with Donkey Kong Country Returns.  That game runs circles around NSMBWii.  Hope this rumor is legit.

I'd love to play New Super Mario bros. at launch, but one thing...How come there's no Pikimin 3 on this list?

Not that I'dhave the time to sit down and play a home console, what with college coming up....Life sucks.  :(

Mario tennis is a franchise I really like.  The lack of RPG mode is a little sad, but I guess it's okay since it is MARIO TENNIS, and the RPG mode just let you play as some generic kid.  I really didn't like GBA MT game because you couldn't actually use Mario characters for the stronger portion of the game.  Still It looks like a must buy,  once I get a 3DS.   I hope the online isn't THAT lag ridden.

I really like Xenoblade.  It's one of the only things to look forward to on the Wii this year.  About 30 hours in, and boy, can this game kill time in a fun non-monotonous way.

I really hope more Wii games come this year, like Dragon Quest X and Pandora's tower.  Really, Because after I complete the Last Story when it comes out in July, I'll only have my backlog of Gamecube and older generation Wii games to play.

I am willing to bet that Nintendo is making a camera/body sensor similar to Kinnect for Wii U.  That would be supremely awesome.

I really want to get a Wii U, but I college is coming up soon, and I'm not sure I'll be able to afford it.  I'll probably just get a 3DS to satisfy my gaming needs, for the next few years.

 Does anyone know where I could buy a cheap second-hand 3DS (Not Ebay, that site hates me)

@Maxi:

Yeah, I hope Nintendo releases the numbers soon.  I read on VGchartz (not the most legit website) That it sold over 200k in April.  I hope those numbers are true, because then NoA would look pretty idiotic if they are.  Considering that would be well over the sales for the Europe and Japan regions, in lifetime sales.

The worst thing ever happen when I got my purchase from GameStop.  First, the game came in one week late, and when I went to pick up my copy, it had no Club Nintendo insert, and to top it all off, the cashier wouldn't give me a new code, even though he knew the copy was jacked.  I really, hate gamestop.

Back on topic: I'm was sure this game was going to make it in the top five.  I could have sworn there was a rumor about Xenoblade being number three for the April NPD charts.   It's that true?

I know how Nintendo gets with there online systems.  Wii Virtual console was really lackluster in it's latter quarter.

It makes one think that the 3DS's apparent "no new VC games" this early a good thing.  At least Nintendo will hopefully have a balance life cycle of games for the 3DS.

Anyhow, I don't have a 3DS yet, waiting for my birthday/E3 before I get one.  :P:
