TalkBack / Video from EA: NBA Live 08 Gesture Controls
« on: August 24, 2007, 06:40:01 PM »
A short video demonstrating how NBA Live 08 uses gesture control to shoot, block and steal.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=14293

This one minute video clip provided by Electronic Arts outlines the use of motion controls to pull off various basketball moves.  Jump shots are taken by pulling back and tilting forward again while dunks are performed by swiping to the side. Curiously, layups seem to use the same motion control as dunks.  For defensive maneuvers, a simple side swipe will either steal the ball or block a shot, depending on the context.  Passing uses the traditional control method of the A Button and D-Pad.

SEGA NAMES DARRIN STUBBINGTON VICE PRESIDENT OF PRODUCTION AT SECRET LEVEL

Industry Veteran to Help Oversee SEGA’s Growing Internal Development Studio

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (August 2, 2007) – SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. announced today that Darrin Stubbington has joined the team at Secret Level as vice president of production, bringing with him 20 years of experience in developing games and managing development teams. Since SEGA acquired Secret Level in 2006 the studio has doubled in size from 50 employees to over 100 today.

In his new role, Stubbington will oversee Secret Level’s teams of development directors, title producers, artists and engineers that are currently creating SEGA’s highly anticipated titles Iron Man and Golden Axe.

"Darrin’s long list of accomplishments includes building both critically-acclaimed title franchises and respected development studios from the ground up," said Simon Jeffery, president of SEGA of America and head of product development for America and Europe. “We knew he’d be perfect for the job of leading our production efforts at Secret Level."

The hire underscores SEGA’s commitment to creating Western-specific content by growing talented internal teams to build quality games for current and next-generation hardware platforms. The strategic balance between internal development teams like Secret Level, and external development partnerships such as the recently announced Sonic The Hedgehog Nintendo DS ™ title being developed by BioWare, will help SEGA reach its goal of becoming a top five third-party publisher. According to The NPD Group, SEGA of America ranked number six among third-party software publishers in market share by units through June of 2007.

“Our development teams are full of smart people using cutting-edge technology," said Stubbington.  “The SEGA corporate philosophy is one of all teams sharing resources and knowledge to help the entire organization build better games, which is exactly the type of environment I want to work in and lead at Secret Level."

Stubbington began his 20-year career as a programmer and has since held vice president positions at Iguana Entertainment, Acclaim Studios and Midway Entertainment.  He previously worked as executive producer at Electronic Arts where he managed the staff developing the NCAA Football franchise.

NINTENDO ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH ROUSH FENWAY RACING

Nintendo to Debut Wii Paint Scheme at Watkins Glen on Roush Fenway No. 16 Nextel Cup Entry

Concord, N.C. - July 16, 2007 - Nintendo's record-selling Wii™ video game system takes video gaming to a whole new level with a partnership with Roush Fenway Racing and NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Greg Biffle.  Biffle will debut the Wii-themed Ford Fusion at Watkins Glen in August and then provide an encore performance at Dover's Monster Mile in September.  Nintendo's partnership with Roush Fenway Racing is the company's first endeavor with NASCAR and it is excited about the possibilities it brings.

"Partnering with Roush Fenway Racing further demonstrates how Wii is bringing gaming to the masses," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Like going to a NASCAR race, playing Wii is a family event.  Everyone can enjoy Wii regardless of his or her gaming knowledge and experience."

Biffle has one Nextel Cup and two Busch Series wins at Dover International Speedway as well as one Craftsman Truck Series win at Watkins Glen.  Biffle looks to improve upon those stats in the Wii Ford Fusion later this season.

"I'm excited about this partnership with Nintendo and the Wii system," said Biffle.  "I just got one myself and I love the boxing game.  I've always been a fan of boxing and with Wii, it's a workout.  I really get into it.  I'll be driving the Wii car at Watkins Glen and Dover.  I've got a pretty good record at Dover and I'd love to get the Wii car up front in both races."

Team owner Jack Roush is pleased to add Nintendo to the list of power brands that have chosen Roush Fenway Racing for their entry into the sport.

"We have been fortunate at Roush Fenway Racing to add several well-respected and recognizable brands to our list of sponsors," said Roush.  "The addition of Nintendo's Wii as a valuable partner to Roush Fenway is an asset sure to produce multiple benefits both on and off the track.  I understand this is Nintendo's first venture in NASCAR and I know our team will do everything in their power to make it a positive one."

Nintendo and the United States government work to stop counterfeit games in China.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=13299

Nintendo Urges: 'Progress Must Be Made'

REDMOND, Wash., April 10, 2007 - Nintendo of America Inc. today announced its strong support of the U.S. Trade Representative seeking formal consultations with China regarding its failure to meet World Trade Organization obligations concerning intellectual property protection and enforcement in China. As part of its uncompromising campaign against international piracy, Nintendo continues to be an outspoken supporter of the U.S. government, given that more than 7.7 million counterfeit video game products from more than 300 Chinese factories and retailers have been seized during the past four years.

Despite aggressive efforts for the past decade, China has built itself to be the leading production site and exporter for counterfeit Nintendo video game products, and has the largest domestic consumption. Despite the millions of counterfeit Nintendo products seized from retailers and manufacturing plants in China through the years, there has only been one criminal prosecution. Numerous factories, where tens of thousands of counterfeit Nintendo products were seized, escaped with only trivial fines or no penalty at all. And often these production sites continue to operate after products are seized. In order to avoid punishment, many counterfeiters are sophisticated and keep stock levels below the criminal thresholds and avoid keeping sales records.

Each year Nintendo participates in the Special 301 process - the annual process by which the U.S. Trade Representative solicits views from the industry and makes judgments about the adequacy of intellectual property laws and enforcement in foreign countries. This year, Nintendo provided evidence to the U.S. Trade Representative regarding piracy in China, Hong Kong, Brazil, Mexico and Paraguay. The piracy not only affects Nintendo, but also more than 100 other companies who independently create, license, market and sell Nintendo products. In 2006, the estimated loss due to piracy was $762 million.

"Nintendo will continue to work with the U.S. government while aggressively pursuing counterfeit Nintendo products in China," says Jodi Daugherty, Nintendo of America's senior director of anti-piracy. "We're pleased the U.S. government is pushing China to comply with its trade commitments in an effort to protect the lifeblood of the copyright and trademark industries."

Orb Networks has made turning your Wii into a home media center easy, and free.

Orb Networks Unveils New TV Interface, Creating the Ultimate in Personal Broadcasting of Digital Media for Gamers

EMERYVILLE, Calif. — January 29, 2007 — Four weeks after Nintendo® opened up the Internet browser on its WiiTM console, more than 50,000 gamers have discovered Orb Network's MyCastingTM service, which is a simple way to enjoy all of the digital entertainment on the home PC directly on the living room TV screen using Orb's software as the bridge. Responding to the fast-growing user base, Orb created a new TV interface for gaming enthusiasts developed from feedback by gamers in Orb's Wii support forums and Wii blogs.

"Wii users are really getting into using Orb: watching YouTubeTM videos and listening to their music on their TVs. But they want a simple interface to make it easier to navigate with the Wii remote - so we designed one quickly and launched it today," said Joe Costello, Chairman and CEO of Orb Networks. "The experience continues to be about simplicity and when you have 50,000 people starting to use your service over such a short period of time, we want them to know we're listening and responding."

Orb's free software allows you to enjoy all digital media from your home PC, as well as online videos from the growing source of Internet TV and content sites on any other networked device with an internet browser - be it other PCs, lap tops, PDAs or mobile phones with streaming players and TV with the Wii. In addition, Orb announced last week that they also had developed a way for Sony PS3 gamers to also enjoy their personal digital media on their PC directly on their TV as well.

How Orb Works with the Nintendo Wii:

  1. Download the free Opera Internet browser available at www.wii.nintendo.com onto your Wii game console.
  2.
  3. Download Orb at www.orb.com onto your on always-on Windows PC at home. It takes less than 3 minutes to do. To ensure you get the new TV interface you must have Orb Version 2.0 or higher.
  4.
  5. Turn on your TV and access the Wii main menu. Select the Internet Channel when connected to the Internet and open the browser.
  6.
  7. Using your Wii remote, log onto your Orb account through Wii at mycast.orb.com. That's it. Now enjoy, watch and listen to any digital content on your home PC - videos, music, Internet TV and radio or any other online content you programmed in your Orb MyCast application: they are now all airing on your TV screen.

Help junior Planetary Patrol officers Rallen and Jeena save the Galaxy.

Code Input Cards, Wireless Gameplay and Downloadable Content To Revolutionize Experience on Nintendo DS(TM)

BURBANK, Calif. – (January 25, 2007) – "Spectrobes," Disney’s eagerly awaited video game for the Nintendo DS, will not only take players on a captivating action-filled intergalactic journey, but will also introduce innovative new gameplay features designed specifically for the platform.  Disney today announced that "Spectrobes" will include a unique code input card system, local wireless gameplay, Nintendo Wi-Fi downloadable content and a compatible online community.

For the first time on the Nintendo DS, players will be able to use collectible trading cards to unlock additional content within the game using the touch screen.  In addition, players will be able to download content via a Wi-Fi connection; play together locally using a wireless connection; and take advantage of online community features to extend the "Spectrobes" experience beyond the game.

"With all of its innovative features on the Nintendo DS, 'Spectrobes' delivers the type of engaging experience fans of action role-playing games are looking for," said Craig Relyea, vice president of marketing, Buena Vista Games.  "Following in the footsteps of 'Kingdom Hearts,' 'Spectrobes' is another uniquely original game franchise that is rich in story, characters and unique gameplay features.

The game features two junior Planetary Patrol officers named Rallen and Jeena who must save the galaxy by awakening, training and collecting prehistoric creatures called Spectrobes.  These creatures hold the key to defeating merciless enemies known as the Krawl.  "Spectrobes" fully utilizes aspects of the Nintendo DS, such as its revolutionary touch screen and microphone, through creative gameplay that includes excavating and awakening dormant creatures with the stylus and voice commands.

Included in each "Spectrobes" game is a pack of four translucent lenticular code input cards, perfect for collecting and trading.  Once players unlock the special ability in the game, they can fit a code input card over the Nintendo DS touch screen and use the stylus to consecutively tap numerical holes in the cards, unlocking new content, which includes creatures and minerals.  Along with inclusion in game packages, additional trading cards will be available after the game’s release.

Once awakened and trained, Spectrobes are powerful creatures that can be used by Rallen to battle against the Krawl or other players and their creatures locally via wireless gameplay.  Players can enter a one-on-one battle with a friend or participate in an organized tournament for up to 16 players.

Players can also earn the ability to download content such as videos, creatures, custom parts and minerals through a Wi-Fi connection.  Also, once connected to the Internet, the Nintendo DS will generate a personal planetary patrol badge number that can be synchronized to each player’s profile page on the Spectrobes web site.  Once connected to their game results, players’ profiles will include information about their Spectrobes creatures, armor and weapons.  In addition, a leader board on the web site will track the top scores from several special sequence battles in the game, allowing players to show their success to a global audience.

Developed by Kyoto, Japan-based Jupiter Corporation, "Spectrobes" will be available worldwide on March 13, 2007.  "Spectrobes" is rated E for Everyone by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and will have a suggested retail price of $29.99.

NEW YORK, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Six Flags (NYSE: SIX) and Nintendo of America today announced a sponsorship and marketing agreement under which the Wii video game system will be the Official Gaming Console of Six Flags parks and Six Flags will offer complimentary game-playing at Wii Gaming Stations throughout select Six Flags-branded theme parks. In addition, the companies will collaborate on marketing initiatives, including a national sweepstakes promotion for Six Flags on Nintendo.com.

"This agreement with Nintendo enables us to partner with a company, and a product, that has major relevance in the lives of today's families. Wii-MARKABLE! November Sales Show Nintendo Hardware Systems Outsell All Others Combined

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- For video gamers, it was the month that was -- November 2006, the first time all three new home systems would be available to consumers, along with three established portable game devices.

It was a month that belonged to Nintendo.

According to independent sales data from the NPD Group, Nintendo sold 55 percent of all video game systems in November, led by the launch of the Wii(TM) home system and the incredible continuing success of the Nintendo DS(TM) portable.

In only the first seven days of availability after its Nov. 19 launch, Wii sold nearly half a million systems in the United States alone (as reported previously by Nintendo, total sales of Wii in the Americas reached 600,000 in its first eight days of availability). Despite spot shortages in some locations, well more than a million Wii systems will be available in the United States by the end of the year.

While Wii sold through at a rate of more than 70,000 a day for the seven days represented in the data (substantially higher than any other game device), November's two top sellers of any type were the Nintendo DS, at almost 920,000 units, and Game Boy® Advance, with nearly 642,000 portables sold. With Wii and Nintendo GameCube(TM) totals included, Nintendo sold through more than 2.1 million of the 3.9 million systems purchased for the month.

The data also reveals that the Wii title The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess achieved sales of 412,000, representing 87 percent of all Wii purchasers, the highest industry rate of sale for any launch title since introduction of Super Mario® 64 with the Nintendo® 64 a decade ago.

In addition, despite the inclusion of Wii Sports software with every system sale, Wii buyers also purchased an average of two additional games, compared to approximately one game per system for the installed bases of either competing new home system.

REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 18, 2004 - If you've ever enjoyed video games, you've likely played Mario™, Madden or Metroid®, The Sims™ or Spider-Man™ - but you've never played them like this. The names and characters might be familiar, but now you can interact with them in completely new ways.

On Nov. 21, just in time for the holidays, gamers across North America will begin snapping up the most innovative game platform in a decade, the Nintendo DS™. Boasting dual screens, touch-screen and voice-recognition interfaces and two forms of wireless connection, the 1 million Nintendo DS units available in North America already are expected to be depleted by year's end.

"Retailers began calling for more Nintendo DS units even before the first ones arrived," explains Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "They're reflecting the demands of game players for entirely new ways to enjoy games - not just playing the same old games on a different platform. It really comes down to delivering a new experience and that's what we're doing."

Nintendo DS comes embedded with the PictoChat™ communication feature and bundled with a playable demo of the upcoming Metroid Prime® Hunters. In addition, the system will have a dozen titles available during its launch window, spanning every genre, including Super Mario 64 DS from Nintendo, Madden NFL 2005, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR® Golf and The Urbz™: Sims in the City™ from EA, Spider-Man 2™ from Activision, Ping Pals™ from THQ, Feel the Magic™: XY/XX from SEGA, Rayman® DS and Asphalt Urban GT™ from Ubisoft and Ridge Racer® DS and Mr. DRILLER®: Drill Spirits™ from Namco.

By the end of March, the Nintendo DS game library will include 20 to 25 games. More than 125 games remain in development worldwide, from Nintendo as well as every major third-party developer. And because Nintendo DS is backward compatible with Game Boy® Advance SP games, it already has a library of more than 550 games.   "Interest in Nintendo DS is very high as we head into the holidays," says Jeff Griffiths, CEO and president of Electronics Boutique. "This is a must-have item for a wide variety of people, older and younger, this holiday season."

Nintendo DS will sell at an MSRP of $149.99. Its clamshell design protects both screens, and its rechargeable battery allows for six to 10 hours of play on a single charge. The launch is being supported by an aggressive, multifaceted marketing program, which includes the "touching is good" campaign that targets a hip, male demographic in lifestyle magazines and on hot broadcast and cable television programs. Additional information about Nintendo DS is available at www.nintendods.com.

Nintendo DS launches in Japan on Dec. 2. By the end of 2004, Nintendo will ship 2 million units worldwide and another 2 million by the end of March.

Disney’s Aladdin boasts the following features:

And what about the chance to win the hand of the beautiful princess Jasmine?  If only all it took was magic to make Aladdin’s wishes come true!

SUNNYVALE, Calif. --  May 12, 2004 -- Capcom, a powerhouse in the multi-billion dollar video game industry, today presents the highly anticipated Viewtiful Joe sequel, Viewtiful Joe 2 for the PlayStation2 computer entertainment system and Nintendo GameCube. In Viewtiful Joe 2, players will reacquaint themselves with the cel-shaded, comic book movie realm and stunning signature gameplay elements that are synonymous only to Joe.  Capcom’s quirkiest action superhero once again takes center stage in this engaging action brawler that has new moves, a playable heroine, and inventive character designs with gameplay that perpetuates more punch and style than its predecessor. Viewtiful Joe 2 is set to unleash it’s viewtifulness onto the real world this winter.     "Viewtiful Joe was the killer app for the GameCube in 2003, and this winter Viewtiful Joe 2 will raise the bar for excellence and innovation even higher with the second generation of the series," said Todd Thorson, director of marketing at Capcom Entertainment. "With new visual effects, enemies and challenges, Joe and Silvia are ready to take on an all new Viewtiful adventure."

At the beginning of this new adventure, we find Joe and his girlfriend, Silvia, ready to face even tougher enemies and greater challenges.  This time around, not only will gamers be able to play as Joe, but as Silvia right off the bat as well. In addition to being equipped with her pompoms, Silvia will be packing some heat as she wields a projectile weapon to help defeat the encroaching evil that lurks in the shadows.

Keeping to the stylized yet richly detailed visuals, Viewtiful Joe 2 stays true to its masterfully crafted roots and delivers an even more brilliant and polished videogame.  New cinematic visual effect (VFX) powers, such as “Replay” which allows gamers to repeat a part of the action for heroic results, have been implemented to help solve ingenious puzzles, defeat unique yet relentless enemies and add variety to gameplay: Spanning across an increased number of stages and environments including a jungle, snowy mountains and outer space, Viewtiful Joe 2 incorporates more impressive quasi 2D/3D action with over 40 new types of adversaries to obliterate.  The not-so-average-Joe will once again break the gaming mold and deliver an experience unlike any other with his polished martial arts attacks, high-flying acrobatics, and compelling storyline.

Viewtiful Joe 2 boasts the following features:

  • More viewtiful 2D/3D hybrid action spanning more stages
  • New second playable character – Now gamers can select Joe’s girlfriend, Silvia, who not only struts around with her infamous pompoms but also wields a weapon that fires projectiles to fend off the fiendish foes that she encounters.
  • Over 40 different types of enemies to obliterate!

  • Six variations to the Six Machine - Now Joe’s trusty aircraft transforms into various shapes to support his activities throughout various stages such as a racer, cannon, drill or submarine.
  • In addition to the infamous “Slow,” “Mach Speed,” and “Zoom In” visual effects (VFX) powers, the action is even hotter this time around with the new “Replay” VFX power.  Replay a punch for three times the damage. Need to restore some health? Eat a hamburger and replay it so you get three times the effect! But beware, try not to use Replay when getting hit or take on three times the damage!
  • Grab a hold of the enemy to swing and throw them around with vigor!
