PODCAST: Radio Free Nintendo: Episode 99
« on: May 14, 2008, 09:23:00 PM »
Our WiiWare discussion is anything but focused, as we stray into bizarre Virtual Console games and Nintendo's mysterious fall lineup.

RFN is leaner and meaner this week, with a single segment dedicated to the WiiWare launch.  Of course, only James had downloaded anything at the time of recording, so he goes into detail on Final Fantasy Milking Spinoff Chronicles: My Job As A SquareEnix Concept Approver.  The rest of us discuss the launch lineup: what's surprising, what's missing, and what's up with all these casual games?

You know our crew can't stay on topic for very long, so we take extended flights of tangency for Cho-Aniki and speculation on what Nintendo might be selling in fall 2008.  (Hint: It rhymes with "Pee ****".)  Enjoy the shorter episode while we put together a monstrous anniversary special for next week!

Oh yes.  I'm getting a podcast out CLOSE to on time this week.

Expect me to make up for this next week by getting episode 100 out sometime in June.

I think the difference between buying Wii points on the Wii and buying stuff from Nintendo's online store is the need for immediate approval.

I expect the credit card companies require more information if they are going to immediately tell Nintendo it's ok to send the Wii points electronically.

IMO, the Wii Ware launch was quite good it had games for everyone. FF:CC and LostWinds both seem like great titles (Wish I could have played them!). The trivia is supposedly a solid deal for $10 (Though I doubt it comes close to rivaling one of my favorite Wii party games, Smarty Pants) and Defend your Castle has multiplayer mode and is supposedly addicting with features not found in the flash game. Probably the only suspect games are Pop and Black Jack.

In regards to Black Jack, according to IGN, High Voltage was shocked to find it as their first WiiWare title. They expected their shooter (Forgot the name) to be the first game and for Black Jack to come out much later so it looks like Nintendo is, once again, not communicating with developers on when their games will be released.

I heard that too, and I thought that was quite revealing. Clearly, Nintendo hand-picked the US launch line-up fairly late in the day, which makes you wonder what in particular motivated them to make these choices. Gyrostarr (the High Voltage shooter that GP was referring to), Star Soldier R, and Protothea all could have been launch titles by all accounts, but Nintendo chose not to use them - I would imagine this may have been to help differentiate WiiWare from Virtual Console by keeping the shooter genre out of the spotlight that comes with the launch of the service.

After episode 100 can you guys go on a hiatus?  I'm still stuck on episode 90 because I've been swamped at work.  I'm never going to catch up at this rate.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

That's awesome, DAaaMan64.  You should be able to find it in your local independent record store.  It's also at Borders for sure (it was featured on their CD rack for a while).

I hadn't thought about it, but a one-week hiatus after episode 100 is actually a great idea.  I'm sure we could all use a break, especially James.

I can't believe you're judging the fate of Wii Ware based on the 6 launch titles. GP said it, and she's right, the reason to buy Defend Your Castle on WiiWare instead of playing it on the web is the multiplayer. I've been having fun with it in single player and I would imagine that once you get it to the more hectic pace having 4 players going at it would be well worth 500 points. Also it runs full screen on the Wii Ware version as opposed to in a little Flash window, plus progressive scan/widescreen.

Crimm, I hate you for not just making me want Crystal Chronicles, but going as far as drawing comparisons between it and Pikmin, which is like twisting the knife of my not having the blocks for LostWinds, let alone Crystal Chronicles.

Is it too late to try to keep Crimm from looking at the NPD numbers in the interest of public safety?

I can no longer stand by and watch Pokemon Mystery Dungeon's good name be besmirched so undeservedly.  Granted, I haven't played all the way through it yet, but I've got at least ten hours or so of pretty good enjoyment out of it (then I got distracted by other games, but I'll probably come back to it at some point when there's a lull).  I certainly don't regret buying it or anything.

I know roguelikes aren't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but Crimm talks about that game like it's bubonic plague or Miami Nights or something, whereas I feel like it's a pretty solid dungeon crawler with a few annoyances.  Unfortunately I'll probably never be able to play it again without feeling like the ghost of Crimm is hovering over my shoulder and moaning about random dungeons.

It's hilarious to read this because this is kind of the same thing that happened when I reviewed the original game...

A bunch of people said they liked it when the first got it.  But everyone agreed it was monotonous and terrible after you've played for a while. =P

That's the thing, though... a regular person isn't being forced to play through the entire game in a short time in order to review it.  We can just play it for as long as it's fun, and stop and come back later (or not) if it gets too monotonous.  My point being, the amount of fun I've had playing PMD up to this point has already made me consider it a worthwhile purchase.  If I keep going and the game suddenly gets much worse, I'll just stop there and I'll have lost nothing (I can't say I'm particularly emotionally invested in finding out how the story ends).  But if I keep having fun with it, then that just increases the already adequate value:cost ratio.

This isn't required to buy games on Xbox Live and Playstation Network.  All they need is your credit card information.  The only thing I can think of is that maybe it's some sort of child-proofing mechanism.

Oh, I meant to say something about the County field in the Wii Shop. It's not necessary. I never fill it in when I'm buying points and it's never been a problem.

Hey Everyone!
I have been listening to the podcast a long time but I am new to the site and forums. Radio Free Nintendo is my favorite Nintendo podcast. Now that I sucked up enough I feel I can ask a question. LOL j/k.

A few podcasts back a windows update for gaming was mentioned. I forget what it was called and what episode it was mentioned on. Does anyone remember? I would like to download it.

Thanks keep up the good work on those entertaining podcasts. I’m looking forward to #100!!!
