Yummy

I won't ruin the twist but all future Nintendo ads should be like this.

Very cool.

For the first 30 seconds people are going to be thinking "what the hell is this?" then when they see the car sliding part they'll be "whoa, cool!" then the Nintendo text and Mairo Kart footage pops up they'll think "heh, I didn't think Nintendo was cool, gotta get me some online Mario Kart!" Or something.

When the video is playing it says "Your download is ready. Right-click here to save" along the bottom. I think you can figure it out from there...

Haha, quite awesome.  The technical quality is great, as Arbok said, and the concept is really awesome.  The guy's reaction is a nice finishing touch.

Yea - great ad overall, I loved the concept including how it was implemented (especially the acting). The only problem is that I would have liked just a bit more gameplay, and a more obvious reference to Mario Kart. They just said "play whomever you want whenever you want" or something like that, and showed a two second long clip of Mario Kart. It should have blatantly stated that Mario Kart was online, and given a bit more time to show the actual game and the what the banana did in the game. They showed a very short clip of the karts hitting a banana, but you could miss that easily, then wonder how the real man was connected to the game. Not everyone knows what Mario Kart is.

Well if they specifically said Mario Kart was online, people would assume that's the only online game, and it's not. It's not really an ad for Mario Kart DS, it's an ad for Nintendo DS wi-fi.

"Well if they specifically said Mario Kart was online, people would assume that's the only online game, and it's not. "

Yea, that's why I thought that they should say something like "Nintendo Wi-Fi connection; a new breed of online games. With games including Mario Kart Online, play whomever you want, whenever you want..."

Or something like that

EDIT: LOL! I actually wrote (real mistake)
"lay whomever you want, whenever you want" instead of "play whomever..."

No joke

Wow, the MK reference totally went over my head, even with the quick 2 seconds of game footage. I agree that the production values were good, but Ninty's commercials really need more game, and less...everything else.

i think its a stupid commercial...its to abstract and not simple enough for the general public. Show the damn games, and show people playing.

But the commercial wasn't advetising the games, it was advertising the DS's Wifi capability, I am sure they will have seperate commercials that highlite the games individually.

I think it was a very creative commerical the succeded in doing what it was trying to do(advertise Wifi).  MK was just used so that you recognize whats is going on.  Like Bill said

Yeah, I thought the spot was perfect for what it was trying to portray. The only thing more I could have wanted was when she said "coming this fall for Nintendo DS" if they would have added "...and coming next summer to something Revolutionary" it would have just made my day.

I don't think it was a good commercial for average buyers. Like most Nintendo commercials, the people who "get it" are the people who already know about it. The commercial had nothing to do with the DS. "For every action, there's an equal and opposite action." I think it's a lot like the recent Mastercard commercials. It has nothing to do with the product. Do younger crowds know what WiFi means? The commercial should have said: Nintendo WiFi Connection, allowing Nintendo DSs to go online this fall. Or something like that. The average person won't get this ad. Artistically, yeah it is a great commercial. But like ThePerm said, its too abstract. Few none techno savvy people understand what WiFi is. It's not like people are going to jump up and say: Wow! it has WiFi!

exactly, as  a nintendo  fan i did like it...but  i  thought i t wasnt too g reat for the reason  im being extra critical on Nintendo. Nintendo talks alot about attracting  non/nintendo elite  hardcore gamers...but with commercials  like  this  dont think it really gets the message across. Also, if  you wqere a nintendo fan  you would get it  right away..if  not..you might not  remember all  that  what happened and you would say "WTF  was  that...lame!"

from an art perspective it was great.  from a  message perspective it sucked. Plus..it will  probably get cut up.  Nintendo  commercials are  big expensive  endevours with big hollywood  directors and high  budgets...but all that money is wasted because  they  get cut  up  to  fit a  realistic commercial  time span.

KISS Keep  it Simple, Stupid.

Anyone with half a brain would make the connection that it was the banana that made the car slide out of control, which is just a cool example of online gaming on it's own, THEN they show footage of Mario Kart and Mario getting hit by a banana and sliding. I don't see what Nintendo fans would get that other people woudln't, I didn't even think of the Mario Kart reference until they showed the footage, but I enjoyed it.

That excludes too much of the buying public. If Nintendo really wants the mainstream, they have to simplify their marketing. I suggest that instead of the dude sitting down for a healthy snack, he should have stood behind the cart to pee. And then the cart explodes! Cut to Nintendo logo. Instant brand rep. Short, sweet, to the point. Actually there is no point. Making it that much more accessible.

This advertisement is an effective one. The fact that the meaning of the banana isn't immediately obvious (or even obvious at all, for most), is irrevelvant. Over here in New Zealand, Sony ran a series of very popular advertisements which had nothing at all to do with PS2 except for a few seconds of the logo at the end. Spending 90% of the advert capturing the attention of your audience is fine, as long as they're still watching for last 10% when you reveal what it's all about. Also, making the link between content and product unobvious or ambiguous can be an effective technique, because if you pull it off people will spend a while thinking about it afterwards.

I'm not that smart and the "buying public" is dumb but not that dumb. The spot will grab the eyes and ears of thoses it needs to. "Play who you want, where you want, when you want. Nintendo Wi-Fi connection". How much simpler do you want them to be without being outright stupid. Plus, it's only a teaser tralier, just like with a movie the teaser will grab you attention until the full blown trailer is released.
