I was reading through the IGN transcript thingie, and I couldn't believe Reggie said something straight out of Ian's mouth!

"Nintendo is not an 'or' company. Nintendo is an 'and' company."

You better be happy now

Because it's Nintendo's official site and they have no adds to make money from, here's a direct link to the trailer. It'll only save them bandwidth.

Okay, I just saw it and I think it's the best trailer yet. There are still some things they need to work on, particuarly the transformation, but it's still not finished and we know it's going to be awesome anyway. I particuarly liked the music. Around 1:45, if you look closely, Link puts his arm out as an owl is about to land on it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: First Revolution Picture! (Plus new details!)
« on: May 17, 2005, 01:08:06 AM »
Well realise that Sony and Microsoft always lie about how powerful their consoles are. And Nintendo doesn't. In fact, they actually understated the Cube's power before it was launched. Nintendo also always has very powerful hardware. So I don't know if this is actually going to be the case or not, but I think the Revolution will be as powerful as the PS3 and/or XBox 360. All the "2-3 times' statement says is that Nintendo still haven't learned how to effectively trash-talk the opposition.

I personally think it looks ugly, but I really like the Cube in purple so I don't expect Nintnedo to cater to my tastes. In case IGN goes down, I've put the pic on TinyPic.com.

"Well they pretty much had to be. It's not like there's many other Sonic games left."

I'm pretty sure you won't find Sonic 2, the Master system version, on any of the collections. That's the best one as well.

"No SK at Sony or MS conferences.. hmmm.. the darkness comes in 11 hours?"

Sega making another console, with Silicon Knights. You heard it here first.

And how did he lie about SK?

He kept on saying that he was going to go up to Canada for a weekend and get the real story. What really happened with Silicon Knights. That was several months ago, and it did not occur. Even after the video interview it hasn't really happened. If he realised he couldn't get much because all parties were under confidentiality contracts, he should have said so and dropped the 'just wait a few more days!' tag.

I didn't call him an idiot.

The concepts in Majora's Mask didn't seem like they'd suit Zelda very well, but they did. This doesn't sound particularly appealing to me either, but I trust Aonuma to pull it off.

I don't usually keep up with IGN. I know Matt continually lied about talking to Silicon Knights. Does he do this often? In earlier mail bags he said he 'had a hunch'  that you'd turn into a wolf. Or something. But now he's outright stating it.

Matt from IGN now asserts that you will turn into a wolf.

"What I'm most intrigued by, however, is the wolf mechanic. Link changes into the beast."

EDIT: Better put that in spoiler tags in case it turns out to be true.

Dennis may be under a confidentiality contract that prevents him from saying much more.

There's more to this than Dyack is letting on...His body language is ridiculously easy to read...(Oh wtf, Ian post...*earplugs*)

Please elaborate. I mean, I realise he's talking crap but I don't really see what he's hinting at. He throws about the usual courtesies which mean nothing and says that Silicon Knights will do what they want. Looking nervous the whole way through. Can any of the staff tell us if he's usually like that?

Do we know if they left Nintendo or if Nintendo gave them the boot yet?

I think that's because there is an entry-number thingie at the end of the URL. This should work better.

Didn't Nintendo say they were working with SE on wireless at one point? This certainly seems to make sense.

A big launch title for the Revolution from SE would really help it along.

I don't understand why anyone would do this. It's obvious that nobody will buy it. Even if some poor deluded parent got it for their kids, it'd never be played anyway.

"I'll wait for the sequel

The Bible Game II: The Next Testament"

That would be the Qur'an

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wouldn't you like to play with this?

Five years is around the average life span for a console, is it not? Handhelds have typically lasted longer (if they lasted at all). Because heldhelds are always less powerful than consoles they're never going to deliver cutting edge graphics, there's not so much of a techno rush. Sure, some people are crazy about the PSP, but they also think that it plays DVDs and has graphics like a PS2. I think people will stay longer with handhelds then they will with consoles.

Even if the DS doesn't stick around until 2010, I'm sure it will be here for a few years yet. I don't think Nintendo would launch another portable within the next two years unless the DS is mysteriously crushed by the PSP. For a start they need to focus a lot on the Revolution in the time close to it's launch, and secondly I don't think they're willing to try and support three systems when they could support two instead.

I don't buy the 'deal with it' argument. If nobody can make a heldheld that will last as long as its lifespan then it just needs to be simpler. Screw complexity. Having said that, I'm sure there's something Nintendo could do which Sony just hasn't. Like have an easily replacable control sticks or use something like a trackball or a touch screen instead.

The DS will die however, unless updated again, while the PGC could last until 2010 and beyond.

Why would the DS die? I think it's most dangerous period was when it was launched prematurely and didn't have enough games. If it stopped selling then nobody would be developing for it now. But it's got a great selection of titles comming up, and the mysterious WiFi capability is still yet to be revealed. I really hope Nintendo does't kill the DS so soon.

My thoughts on a portable Cube can be found here. I remember once Bill pointed out why the PSP's control stick wasn't a good idea: it will eventually come loose or wear out. With a console you can buy another controller after a few years but that won't work with a handheld. It would be the same with a portable Gamecube.

I'm definately not a photo-editing expert, but I'm suspicious of that picture. It's a strange coincidence that the textis exactly straight, down to the pixel, if you rotate it -23 degrees. So are the lines, except teh middle one is isn't quite paralell with the other two. The 'Nintendo' logo at the top and bottom are slightly different, as you'd expect from a photo, but the copyright symbol is unusually smudged on the top and missing completely on the bottom. If you look at the dot below the HD DVD symbol, you'll notice disparity between the size and tone of each copyright symbol. This may indicate that someone scaled the symbols so they wold look good when pasted onto a CD. I say fake, for now.

Great. This was always obviously a lie anyway, because Iwata said that the Revolution coud be played on both a normal TV and a monitor.

"RPGs were a major problem, that's true, but Nintendo knows that and they will fix it."

What makes you think that? RPGs were a big problem in the 64 dats as well and Nintendo did nothing about it.

There haven't been any American RPGs ported to the Cube because Nintendo is weak in the West and most of the people who make are in some way associated with Microsoft. They'd have been made for the PS2 before they were made for the Cube.

TalkBack / RE: Donkey Konga 2 Releases Monday
« on: May 05, 2005, 12:02:10 AM »
I love the basic mechanics of Donkey Konga but I really don't like the songs much at all. The arrangements are generally unimpressive and the drums sometimes don't sit with the music very well. Most of all I disliked all the popular crap they put in there. I'd like to see specialised versions running exactly the same engine with different soundtracks. Even if there was only two, one with 'cool' music and the other with videogame music, I'd definately be happy. I'd also be interested to see which one sells better.

General Gaming / RE: 360 Does What Xbox ... Waitaminute!
« on: May 04, 2005, 12:53:29 AM »
The 'HD generation' thing was exactly what developers didn't want to hear. Luckily it was a conference for Game Developers, not Game Publishers, and Microsoft was told so accordingly.

I think Microsoft has the wrong strategy. Most of their audience seems to be casual gamers who aren't going to jump at an early launch, especially if there's not a really noticable improvement over that last generation. Of course there'll be hardcore gamers who buy it the first day it launches, but I doubt they're as plentiful as those who'll buy Nintendo's or Sony's console. Few are going to mind waiting a few months for the Revolution or the PS3 if they're much better. Having said that, Microsoft have successfully hyped Halo, so they can successfully hype anything.

AFAIK, the Master System Sonic games weren't included in Mega Collection. The 'original' Sonic the Hedgehog was better on the MS because the levels seemed to suit the mechanics better. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was a completely different game for each system. It was one of my first games ever, so I'm very biased, but IMHO it is much better than the Mega Drive/Genesis game of the same name. These games should really be included.

EDIT: Opps, looks like the Master System version of the first Sonic game actually there as a 'Sega Game Gear" title.

Devoted physics chips are the upcomming gaming hardware right now. They're still very rare, but they'll likely become standard sometime in the future. AFAIK, the very first physics chips for PCs are being manufactured now.

It doesn't strike me as a very Nintendo-ey thing to do, but putting a physics chip in the Revolution could only be a good thing.

Still I'm concerned over how much focus Nintendo is putting into this "non-gamer" market. I don't want them losing focus on the core groups of dedicated gamers that made them a success in the first place.

They aren't really. I was concerned by this when they started talking about it a lot but nothing much has come out of it. Except, of course, for a highly promising and original franchise which is selling the DS. Electroplankton required few resources to develop and Nintendogs wouldn't have got 40/40 from Famitsu if it was shallow or somehow compromised by it's appeal to non-gamers. Pokemon appealed to non-gamers too and it was very deep. Nintendo just needs faster localisation to help the Western line up.
