After more than a decade of playing, I'm officially bored of the Pokemon formula.  I don't think Pokemon can ever draw me in again just by layering the same mechanics over a different map.

Now, if Nintendo ever made a spin-off series that added a bit more depth to the formula, a "Pokemon Tactics," if you will, I can very well see me easing back into Poke-serfdom.

If they make "Pokemon Tactics", I quit. The only constants in life anymore are death, taxes, and Pokemon games, so they'd be wise not to mess with it. Besides, a large percentage of customers for each new "generation" are newcomers to the franchise, so it's new to them!

I never played this one, since I'd never beaten the original game. Still haven't, eleven friggin' years later...

Your doing it wrong mikintosh.  The Wii and the DS have taught me to branch out, and play stuff I wouldn't normally.  And to find the games to play, because they aren't gonna find me.  I own the most games for my DS than any other system ever.

Also, as far as the topic goes, I got maybe two pages into the farticle and couldn't stomach it.  It was pretty bad

you see what i did there?

Yes, I most certainly did! Well, it doesn't help for the Wii and the DS that they probably have the most disproportionate ratio of "real" games and licensed tie-ins which get horrible reviews (though they probably aren't all bad). I'm not going to plunk down $30 on a game that got 6/10s across the board; I have many higher quality games at home that I haven't even finished. As for the 360, I had a long string of purchases made for that system the first six months or so after I got it, but now I seem to have hit a brick wall; in their case bad licensed games are replaced with bad shooters and heaven knows what else. Hell, after enjoying Halo 3 immensely I barely got through Gears of War's first level before returning it, so maybe I'm just picky.

29
Yeah, it did

but it's not like how the game plays is a mystery to anyone really. It's really all about the look and feel of the game and I guess the demo does its job there.

I thought people said that you couldn't even start a match without a second controller.

30
When were the glory days of demos, then?

The shareware era.

Yeah well at least these are easier to get ahold of :) I still have fond memories of the Doom demo; don't think I ever actually ended up buying it tho...

Just prefacing this by saying that I don't ever pirate games or use flash carts, as I think both hurt Nintendo in the way the article describes.

The DS depresses me. It has a huge amount of games out for it, but only a mere fraction of which I've ever been interested in (the only system with worse ratios for me is the PS2), and it's the system that I've returned the most games to Gamestop for store credit, by far. Nintendo hasn't been supporting it in the same way they aren't supporting the Wii sufficiently, the prices are too steep to experiment with obscure titles (it doesn't seem like anything gets marked down below $18), and the DSi was a huge miss in offering a valid reason for people to upgrade while at the same time promising that any new titles will only be made for the new system. I haven't bought a DS game other than Pokemon Platinum and Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (used) in a year, and that's a shame, since the system still holds such promise to me.

Demos this generation downright suck.

When were the glory days of demos, then?

Well, it hadn't been confirmed yet...gee whiz!

It's really just a matter of what your used to.  Lots of people were playing street fighter on the SNES or the genesis, where an analog stick wasn't even in the picture.  If you learn on a dpad you'd probably stick with it.

To which you reply, "I was one of those guys who learned with the d-pad, I just know how to get out of the stone age" :)

Haha, actually other then my Game Boy I grew up with consoles with pretty much only analog sticks (N64 and onward), which is why I can't deal with anything else and also why the Dualstrike confuses me so much. Why even put a thumbstick on the thing if it's in such an awkward place?

Analog sticks lack precision, and are only similar to arcade sticks in shape.  Arcade sticks are digital, like a d-pad.  They are either on or off, and that precision is important to fighting games, analog sticks have a sort of looseness and it's easy to lose which direction your actually pushing.

I dunno, I've played umpteen hours of Xbox ports of Street Fighter & King of Fighters and haven't noticed a problem :)

I dunno what it is but the 360 controller just feels awkward for fighting games to me.

Probably because it has the most horrible and unresponsive d-pad imaginable.

I still don't see why people use the D-pad for fighting games. Aren't analog sticks much closer to the arcade controls on the machine?

To be more exact, it's venom whiffing a venom fang over ryu and getting tagged in on my cyclops on the clown stage

lol, there's no "think" about it

Well, with that kind of distortion (and the fact it's only 3 seconds long) it's hard to tell whether it's the fancy jazz stuff from 2 or the synth remix stuff from 1...either of which is fine by me.

Well, I'd tend to think they'd base these things more on business decisions rather than emotional ones, since they are a business...

I meant the people who own the Wiis.

Ah, sorry. Though I dunno, if they were only putting one game on a disc, would they be able to justify having "Dr. Mario" on the shelves next to all the other games? I mean, all the shovelware makes everything of quality look like a bargain, but it just doesn't seem like a market model that next-gen consumers would get behind. Man, I sound like a marketing exec...

The reason I love MK64 is the same reason I have problems with Double Dash (though I still play both all the time): I don't like constrained tracks because they're not very forgiving, and make the "everyone's throwing items at you" atmosphere seem annoying as opposed to fun. Same reason I don't play the SNES and GBA games either (tho those two are pretty much interconnected).

Anyway, back to Cube, I never even finished the *first* Metroid Prime since I kept getting lost/bored (the lack of anyone to talk to in that game tends to weigh on you); didn't help that my 1051 memory card that held all my saves got fried by my Wii (tho strangely my Melee save survives), and I just had no interest in starting it up again. I like the mechanics tho.

NFL Blitz 2003 FTW !!!!!!!!

I don't care if everything is out of date, It's a fun game ! Something I need to play with rumble its just empty to not have bit hits without rumble.

Word. It's the only football game I've ever enjoyed.

Just for reference, Hudson's entire WiiWare catalog in a compilation would cost 79$ if you priced it at the combined cost of all 10 contained games.

Sad to say, but most of the people who can't afford Internet for their Wii console probably don't have enough money to buy many games, anyway. And since there hasn't been a breakout hit amongst the WiiWare games a la Geometry Wars (tho I guess World of Goo is doing very well), there's not much call for these publishers to put money into packaging for retail distribution when the whole point of digital downloads was so they didn't have to do that.

I don't think it's a pure cost thing, they just don't care enough.

You want to know what the best game on the XBox 360 is?

Sneak King.

You play as Burger King's King and you have to hide and surprise people with food when they least expect it. Genius.

Actually, Big Bumpin' is surprisingly addictive in multiplayer. Got more enjoyment out of that then Banjo-Kazooie, anyway...

There's no question that piracy is huring the PSP's software sales (re: killing them), but the other big factor is...game quality.

Yeah, I don't pirate games or use emulators, but I certainly haven't bought anything for my PSP in a long while. However, it's still a nice picture & video browser, and it lets me play Power Stone whenever I please!

DD is the worst in the series.

That's impossible, Super Circuit is from the bowels of hell. It actually has worse controls then the SNES game, which is amazing. And I liked Sunshine a lot more after I finally beat it five years after I bought it, but it was still way too "samey" level-to-level. Galaxy was the real true sequel to SM64.

Overall though, I have a real fondness for the Gamecube, and I have more games for it than anything else. Zelda Four Swords FTW!

I wouldn't count on seeing Stunt Race FX. It didn't really make a splash back in the day and it has aged like a dirty sock.

Since when do they care about original sales numbers? They sell Turbographx-16 games, for crying out loud.

48
Well, the process got slowed down to make room for WiiWare.

Which also hasn't really shown its promise, especially from Nintendo's own 1st-party development teams. There should already be a slew of games like Dr. Mario RX Online, and there aren't. I mean, My Pokemon Ranch?

49
You only have 2GB left on your HDD? What did you throw on there?

Music from CDs; they finally got the user soundtrack thing down right with the 360, so I like to have things to listen to in Burnout and such. Plus, I have a bunch of XBLA games.

This may be a slight tangent, but I don't see why all of these classic game companies don't just dump their entire backlog onto the VC/XBLA/PSN channels; this staggered release business is ridiculous, because the years of lost sales for releasing something 3 years after the service began has to outweigh any benefits to releasing them one at a time.
I'm sure that they've done market research to determine that it's best not to release everything at one time. They're not the only one who does this sort of thing either; companies don't release every season of an old television show on DVD all at the same time. Though I do think that they should go back to releasing three VC games every week, regardless of what's coinciding on WiiWare. With the amount of systems supported by the VC and the possibility of more, I'm sure they could find three worthwhile games every week for many years to come.

Yeah, but that's usually because they don't want to crowd the market by releasing multiple seasons of Frasier at the same time, for example. I don't think it's the same for video games since they're more evergreen and you don't have to experience them in any particular order (unless they're sequels). At the very least the process is too slow.

yeah it's a download game.

That's not really confirmation...

That's also not confirmation. I'm not saying I don't believe it, but someone could have just put this up on the website because they heard a rumor that it was coming out for the 360.
