Nintendo Promises Changes in Future Tomodachi Life Games
« on: May 09, 2014, 05:51:03 PM »

The company responds further in wake of their initial response.

Nintendo responded further today regarding the absence of same-sex marriages in Tomodachi Life.

"We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life," the company stated on their website. They further explained that a patch to include same-sex marriages wasn't feasible.

They did, however, promise changes in further installments of the Tomodachi Life series, if such come out.

"We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series," they stated, "we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players."

Nintendo has been criticized for its initial response to the Miiquality movement in social media sites, earlier citing that it did not intend to venture into social commentary with the games. Their earlier response fueled further controversy, not just from gamers themselves but from various organizations as well, including GLAAD.

Better late than never. This still have the corporate double speak, but that is to be expected.

Now people can just focus on Nintendo being ignorant, lazy, and poorly managed rather than homophobic.

And now I'm guessing Nintendo will just NEVER release any sequels to this game.  That would be an easy way to avoid the issue.  NOA probably doesn't have any actually say in the content of future sequels but if NCL released a sequel without gay relationships then NOA could just choose to not localize it.

It's funny.  I skipped the OP in the other thread because I had assumed it was *this* comment that everyone was talking about.

I don't see how this is any more palpable than the previous one to anyone who's actually offended or upset by the design of the game.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

This is a much better response and what should have been said in the first place.

Of course, there will be another game in the series. It's a MASSIVE hit in Japan, and Nintendo isn't in a position to turn down that kind of money. It will be very interesting to see how they implement these features in the next game, and also how they juggle the messaging at that time.

They'll probably just remove the relationship part of the game from the North American versions in any future games.  The decision will be if nobody has the ability to date now, then there can't be any controversies.

Unless the North American version of this game becomes a huge hit, NCL just doesn't have any reason to care.  Of course even if the North American version of this game is a huge hit, they probably won't care either.  They'll just think the great American sales show the lack of gay relationships wasn't a big deal after all if so many people still bought it and so they'll just imagine a sequel not having it won't be a big deal either.

Too bad they can't go back and delete the first terrible statement, though it still may have been best to not say anything.

MUCH better response this time.  Honestly, if Nintendo would have said this next to "we didn't mean to make a social commentary" and "we'll be more inclusive next time" first, the controversy would've probably ended there.  I hope they don't get hit by the "too little too late crowd".
