Welcome to Connectivity 198, its a long one!

In the first half of the show we kick things off with Zach offering some thoughts on the recent PC release of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter from the N64. Next up, Becky talks about the Nintendo 3DS game, Final Fantasy Explorers. After that, Adam talks about getting back into Ingress along with a discussion about the Pokémon 20th Anniversary commercial, before relating his frustration at his Detective Barbie game not running on his PC. Nick wraps things up with some brief thoughts on Wind Waker HD.

Before the group moved onto the main topic for the week, they answer a listener mail question from Adolph Vega. He gives the crew several predictions to mull over.

The main topic this week is all about Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow and their surrounding era. We celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise with a lengthy discussion filled with memories, glitches and novice level advice.

The musical selections on this episode include 'What Kind of a Pokémon Are You' from the 2.B.A. Master CD and the ending theme from the Pokémon Red and Blue album Pokémon Hikerukana.

Connectivity has joined twitter, so be sure to follow @ConnectivityNWR to be up to date on any announcements. We are wanting more listener participation, feel free to ask questions, they may show up in the show!

While his points are valid, I ultimately think they don't matter a whole lot. They don't impact on the games general enjoyment value.

Project X Zone 2 "Don't buy this game, 8/10."

Great Pokemon discussion, and I believe the reason they use thunder for move names instead of lightning is that it fits into the character limit in the original name and it's just stuck ever since then.

To the outdated discussion I don't think sequels that improve upon the original automatically make the original trash. It's still a fun game in it's own right and is still interesting to go back and play due to it's historical significance, I don't see how superficial things like the items being too expensive would undo everything good the game does.

Agreed.

A good example would be to say "No point in playing the original Super Mario Bros, because NSMB is better". I mean, it couldn't even scroll backwards. ;)

The games aren't GARBAGE, it's just, like, you don't have to put up with that stuff anymore. You know?

I kinda wanted to come back to this, and... it's a hard listen. not out of any sort fo scathing or seething, but out of the lack of knowledge and research done here.

I suppose it works as a prism for a different sort of pokemon fan, but I feel like I could go on a checklist of outright misinformed opinions.

I feel a lot of Zack's frustrations come from not understanding Gen 1's mechanics more than anything. things like the Homogonized SPECIAL stat making pokemon equally sturdy defenders and Special attackers probably lead to some of the frustration, but also the fact that Vine Whip and Thundershock are TERRIBLY weak moves.

Critical Hit Percentage is calculated on the Speed stat for some INSANE reason. also, Hyper Fang is a move that has a higher weighted crit chance, so that might be where that frustration is rooted from.

even if your move is accurate, all moves besides Swift have a 1 in 255 chance of missing.

things like sleep can stick for 3 to 7 turns, and those turns reset if you switch the sleeping pokemon out.

there's a bunch of other garbage like that too... particularly moves like wrap and fire spin that for some insane reason are just the auto-lockdown attack, no matter how slow they go in widdling your opponent down. if you're faster and you're wrapping your opponent, they're left with a 1 in 255 chance every 2 to 5 turns to even have a shot of attacking you.

I used to toxic stall with wrap on a lot of my pokemon back in the day. people in turn did not want to play Pokemon with me.

But yes. Gen 1 is kinda bad for it's terrible pacing and unneeded bullshit like item limits and such, but I feel the imbalance comes from Psychic's omnipotent type advantage coupled with some of the highest SPECIAL stats in the game. also, it's very easy to bind opponents to the point that makes them want to yank the game link cable out.

I don't get too wrapped up in the smaller mechanical problems or annoyances with the games. After recording though, I did feel we didn't spend enough time on the games themselves in a deeper way. I probably should have pulled back a little from the overall era.

Actually, my enjoyment isn't hampered at all from how the games play. I guess I'm just a dirty casual lol.
