Mario's Assist Block power-up from Super Mario 3D Land returns, among other gold-tinged power-ups.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31023

White Tanooki Mario returns in New Super Mario Bros. 2 as the game's Assist Block, according to Famitsu.

The power-up first appeared in Super Mario 3D Land, making Mario invincible for the rest of the level. Like 3D Land, the Assist Block containing a Golden Leaf appears after you die five times in the same spot. It is unknown if there will be any other additional boosts other than invincibility from the suit in New Super Mario Bros. 2.

Mario will also don a Golden Raccoon outfit in New Super Mario Bros. 2, likely somehow related to obtaining coins. It is unknown exactly what item will activate the two different suits, as so far, only a Golden Leaf, which is identical to the one that activated the White Tanooki Suit in Super Mario 3D Land, has appeared in New Super Mario Bros. 2 art.

There's also a Golden Mushroom power-up that gives you a bunch of coins. Also, like in 3D Land, Luigi has a fox-like appearance in his raccoon/tanooki garb. Additionally, Luigi becomes silver when he gets a Golden Fire Flower, unlike Mario's gold.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 comes out on July 28 in Japan. It hits on August 17 and August 19 in Europe and North America respectively.

i have no hype for this game. Level design be damned it seems like something they thought up last second. This will be the first mario I ' wait and see reviews ' with when all others I have bought on day one and even reserved.

I had no hype for Super Mario 3D Land until I got it as an unexpected Bonus from a GameStop deal. I just generally have no hype for mainline Mario games anymore.... but wow. With 3D Land I went from no hype to like... 10! TEN!!!1!

I seem to be the only one on staff who came out of E3 really looking forward to this game. Combining Mario platforming with a high score mechanic is going to be insanely addictive for me.

You aren't the only one.

I'm not ecstatic, but fucking a, it's a goddamn Mario game. I'll be there with bells on, like I have been for every side-scrolling Mario game since I've understood gaming.

Am I expecting an amazing game? Eh. Am I expecting an enjoyable game? Yea. And I'm okay with that.

Not true. I think all the staff who played it are looking forward to it. I am, even though I was skeptical when it was announced. The level design looks great so far.
