Metal Gear Solid on GameCube - CONFIRMED
« on: February 27, 2003, 03:15:59 PM »
Konami's website confirms that a Metal Gear Solid game is in development for GameCube.

An administrator at Konami's website's official message boards has confirmed that recent rumors of a Metal Gear Solid title for GameCube are indeed true.

I might as be the first to tell you all. I can tell you that YES, just as Mr. Miyamoto stated, a metal gear game for the GC is in development, but honestly, that is all the info that is available.

This post is by "Administrator", a user with Administrator privileges and the first registered member of the message boards.  It's pretty safe to say that this person works for Konami.

Clearly, there are no details on the game, nor do we have any idea whether this will be a remake or port of either existing Metal Gear Solid game, or an entirely new chapter.

We'll have more info on this announcement soon.  Thanks to Ethan Pearson of Nintendophiles for the tip!

I'm happy it's confirmed even though I probably won't buy. There is a chance in the future closer to release... I'm looking at Splinter Cell on the Gamecube. But back to the point, I think this will help Nintendo a lot, especially if it is is brand new.

? Is this all the conformation PGC could get? We had our own thread discussing this, linking to the exact same page. Exactly how much more credibility does the Nintendophile have over us forum goers?

Anyway, not complaining. This could only be a good thing....right?

Finally, this is a big step. This is the first big non-sports property (other than Yu-Gi-Oh, and, well, TMNT I guess) that Konami has shared with the Gamecube. It's probably just an enhanced port of the PSX game, but still, this is a step in the right direction, considering when even the rumors of a Contra: Shattered Soldier port didn't even turn out, it was looking bad.

GIMME A HELL YEAH!

FINALLY, Metal Gear has come back to Nin-ten-doooooo.

OK, its out of my system now

The question now is: Is it a new adventure or a Remake? It'll be nice if its a new venture, but a Re-make will suffice. But if they remake, will it be done a la Resident Evil?  Maybe we'll have something to see at E3 perhaps?

PGC doesn't want to take chances with stuff like this. They want a perfect track record with reporting confirmed and accurate news. I understand this but it would be nice to once and a while get some speculation or some rumors. I don't think it would be a big deal as long as it was appropriately marked. Hell, even though Louie is supposed to report rumors all of that stuff is confirmed on PGC's end of things any way. Of course with the accuracy and lack of BS that PGC does I always know that it's a definite thing when I see something is confirmed here. PGC is always the final word on stuff like this for me even if IGN or a similar site is saying it's true.

You know that if I hadn't seen MGS2, I would be jumping up and down with joy about right now.  Except that I really and truly hated MGS2.  My love for MGS is tempering this though, so I am quite hopeful for the game.  I would really like to see a remake of MGS on GameCube for my own reasons (I loved the game to death), but I would also like to see MGS3 or MGS Gaiden on GameCube simply for the reason that it would attract a lot of users of other systems, and would elevate Nintendo's installed userbase, showing developers that if they give us good games, they will be successful.

A joint Konami and Nintendo venture.  Mario Gear Solid.  Think about it.  You could make the little pudgy plumber into a stealthy warrior ready to plunge in and attack by jumping on heads, squirting water, or simply ramming into hordes of enemies with his Invincible Star Power.  What a beautiful marriage.  I can't wait.

I just hope its not a port of MGS2.  All in all I would prefer a remake of the original Metal Gear (considering the story was trashed in the NES version)  or even better *gasp*the MSX sequel Metal Gear 2: Soild Snake. Seriously though remaking the first two games in the series would be great for those who've only played Solid. Especially when you consider that MG2:SS contains a lot of info about the characters in MGS.  If you never played MG2:SS how would you have never know who even Master was and why you should even care about him.

THAT is exactly what I would like to see.  I have played Metal Gear on NES, but the insane difficulty of the game turned me off.  I thought that a lot of the ideas were good ones, but I am interested in playing the first two games at some point.  I have heard that the MSX Metal Gear 2 was the best in the series, but I have never had an opportunity to try it myself.  A remake would be quite high on my most wanted list.

What I want to see is a remake of Metal Gear Solid, with new remakes of the original MSX versions of "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake" included as unlockable bonuses. Perhaps by way of the GCN/GBA link cable.

Ah, who am I kidding? I want the crappy NES action game "Metal Gear 2: Snake's Revenge" tossed in there as well.

And Snatcher.

Is this exclusive?  Gaming-Age reported yesterday that MGS was being remade for all three consoles.

Either way I'm happy that Konami is at least giving the Cube some attention.  You can talk about the lower userbase all you want but Konami basically wrote the Cube off before it was released yet supported the Xbox.  Now they have an excuse to not support the Cube but they didn't really initially.

Anyway this is obviously Konami's way of testing the Gamecube market.  A remake is less of a risk to make then a brand new game so it's probably the most likely scenario.  This game HAS to sell well if we want any decent Konami support.  I'm not saying buy the game if you don't like it (I sure wouldn't) but don't sit on the fence either.  If you're interested in MGS buy it the day it comes out.

Hopefully it's not a port of MGS2.  That game's gotten such a bad rap lately a Gamecube version would be doomed to fail.

Gaming-age most likely got it from the same source, so they just made up the part about it being multiplatform.  In fact the person working for Konami on their forums basically said that it will probably be exclusive, and that's all we've heard on it's platform.

I think that Gaming-Age said it was multiplatform. GBA + GameCube = multiplatform.

The problem with this is that it had better be a new game that is up to the standards of the other two, and not a toned-down spin-off. It also can't be different than the PS2 and X-Box versions, if there are any. This is because at this point in the game--late, late in the game--if it is one of those things that it cannot be, the sales won't be very good. If the sales aren't very good, then Konami's going to be like, "I told you so," and stop making games that are somewhat worthwhile on the console.

However, if it is a new game, then either it is a good idea to tweak it up and throw some new things where ever so that it may be worth spending $50 on, orrrrr don't charge $50 for it. A third good idea in this same vein would be to put both games into the same box. I already had my tryst with the MGS games, and as big a Nintendo fan that I am, I won't be buying this game if it's simply on par.

I heard Konami will be using this game as the test to see if the Gamecube is worth bothering with. To me that has bad news written all over it. I'm pissed off that they think they can totally diss the Gamecube for more than a year and then suddenly release a remixed game and expect it to sell. Why the sudden interest in Gamecube? Sounds like someone lobbied, finally got their way, but was also given an ultimatum: sell or else. And most likely, since they are essentially giving us a rehash of some older game, this new Metal Gear will not sell as well as it needs to. It's too dang late! If it comes even close to tanking, kiss all future Konami games goodbye. So I'm telling you my prediction right now: BAD NEWS.

Their only hope for high sales is if they make a completely ground-up amazing remake like RE. But did THAT game even sell very well?

Major 3rd parties refuse to give Gamecube the same dignity they give the XBox. It's been that way since day one and they are trying to make us believe it had to do with their marketing forecasts when most likely it had to do with the cash MS stuffed in their pocket. Amazing how that can alter your forecasts.

The way I see it, it's probably gonna be Substance. Mainly because Xbox and PS2 have it, and Substance is basically the Director's Cut of MGS2. Not a bad thing, really.

maybe this will pave the way for the silent hill series...maybe konami was waiting till the userbase his a certain number...maybe their giving up on xbox(they did in japan)...there are alot of factors...but think aobut this...your gettign metal gear and final fantasy the same year(assumign its more complete then previously beleived(theres been a remake rumor for months now))...is that not awesome. Gamecube owners you know own a psx/ps2. Metal Gear,Final Fantasy, Resident Evil. Then you have a nitnendo system too.

But wouldn't ANY change from Konami be a good one? This is a weak one. Maybe if Konami had a NEW game that it was releasing on the Gamecube I wouldn't see it this way.

The fact that it's probably (we don't know yet) a remake tells me they are reluctant to commit any resources in this direction. In return for their half-hearted efforts they will probably get mediocre sales. Let's wait and see what kind of game they churn out. If it's a new game of some sort, there may be hope. If it's a port of the XBox / PS2 version: bad news, very bad. The PS2 version has been on the budget rack for ages. They expect people to get excited about it now? I don't think so. Game ships, sales stink, Konami drops the GC and never looks back.
