Why would Nintendo opt out of E3 this year?
« on: April 26, 2013, 05:02:59 PM »
I spent my morning writing this and trying to figure out why NIntendo would opt out of doing a big E3 press conference this year.

I just don't get it. Seriously. It makes very little sense. I understand the arguments for why they did this, but to me, now more than ever is the time when they need to put on a big show at E3.I like the Wii U.

I think it's an awesome game console with a ton of potential but the average consumer still seems to think it's some sort of accessory for the Wii U.

E3 was their chance to show the world that this isn't the case at all.Anyway, I'm genuinely interested in finding out what Nintendo fans feel about this issue.

Also, if you're curious, below is a link to my column about Nintendo opting out of E3.

They are NOT opting out of E3. Instead of doing one big conference, they will do several smaller ones. Plus, they will be on the show floor as always. They will still get all the press coverage, and all the important announcements will still be reported by every major site and magazine. Really, nothing will change.

I don't know. I'm sort of puzzled about it. I keep hoping that someone would look at the matter and try to figure out what Nintendo's reasons might be and write them up and explain them. I just can't seem to find anyone doing that. Could it be that they just don't have any games ready?

In this case it is ridiculous, honestly, we have five talkback threads on this subject, more then likely this question has been at the center of all of them...

I'm inclined to agree with you on this.  Maybe if there wasn't the "Rumor Speculation/Road to E3" thread already in this section, it would be understandable, but I'm not sure what else there is to say on this, honestly.

I see 2k software is not at E3 period this year. But they weren't there the last few years either, right?

2K Games is just a division of Take-Two Interactive. Take-Two IS at E3 this year, according to the official E3 website.

I just think E3 is faced with an identity crisis which resembles a lot the current state of the video game industry, and am truly glad that Nintendo decided to shift things around and start using more unconventional techniques such as Nintedo Direct's to get their message across. I just want to know wtf is Retro doing!!!

I think Nintendo just wants a smaller preshow that has the usual boring sells/profit boasting and 3rd party plugging as well as showing off all the game that will be playable on the show floor. Then at the aftershow, they will show off all the newest games in development that are at least a year off which they do not want to be constantly heckled about during the actual event because they don't want to say anything more on them yet.

Might work if the press doesn't declare them dead for lack of games after the preshow's certain flop.

I still can't believe Wonderful 101 wasn't in the main conference but only announced afterwards.

Yeah. I remember walking back to the media room after the press conference and looking at the press kit and we were like "What the hell is Project P-100?"

While it seems like a strange decision with the situation Nintendo is in right now, looking at the tech industry as a whole, Nintendo is right in line with what most other major companies are doing.  Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, Google, etc. are stepping away from completely or greatly reducing their involvement in the massive tradeshows (SXSW, CES, etc) and holding more of their own events.

Odd choice, but I'm guessing they don't think they have enough to warrant a big show about it. Either way, it doesn't sound good.

There were – if I remember correctly – already rumours in 2011 about Nintendo wanting to pull out of the press conferences and focus more on the Directs but they did not do so because they still had to present the WiiU. As to why they would do it, I can only guess, but I think the ubiquitous explanation "they want to reach the consumer more" will most likely do the trick.

Incidentally, they are at GamesCom this year, which will probably mean that this explanation is sort of true.
