TalkBack / Re: Reggie Comments on Slowing Wii Sales
« on: June 23, 2010, 11:43:17 AM »

I think DK Country Returns is the "killer app" for Nintendo over this coming Holiday period, just as NSMB Wii was last year. DK will not sell quite as gangbusters as Mario did, but that is expected and it'll do alright. I am a bit confused about the stategic value of launching Kirby's Epic Yarn around the same time of year as DKC Returns, since they are both family-friendly Wii platformers. Aren't they cannibalizing their own market?
Anyway, I dunno if NSMB Wii helped to boost system sales last Holiday period but if it did, I think DKC Returns will have a similar effect, though not as large. Then, in the following Spring, I expect to see systems with more game pack-ins. I wouldn't be suprised to see NSMB Wii chucked in as a bundle next Spring. I recall they did something similar in the latter days of Super Nintendo (that's when I got mine, in '94.)

LOL at all the "kids under 7 shouldn't play video games or have a handheld" or whatnot. I suspect you wee folk don't have children. I dunno, so apologies if I'm wrong. Thanks for the parenting tips though. I'll consider them.

OK, I've considered them. I reject them.

Super LOL at the "lazy parenting" comment. If you only knew how "lazy" I am, or my wife is, or all of my peers, you'd instantly take that one back. If anything, the group of parents I know are guilty of over-parenting sometimes. And ALL of the kids in my circle have DS's and home systems. They've had them for years. They had Gameboys before the DS's. Age ranges of the kids are, now, between 6 and 13. Maybe y'all should stick to what you know, eh?

Quote from: Reggie

This is the same messaging that the industry is putting out with 3D movies, so it is a standard protocol.
I've never once seen this "under 7" warning in respect of 3D movies. I don't know what Reggie is talking about.

Huh. Miyamoto's E3 roundtable comments this week made this game sound like it would be closer to Endless Ocean in a sub. I guess not. That said, I'd love a 3DS Endless Ocean, please and thank you.

This game intrigues me and I may consider picking it up. Thanks for the interview, I hadn't heard of this game before. It has a few good points to sell me on the game: exploration, Metroid-style backtracking with upgrades, the NyxQuest engine (that's a great game), a hidden mystery layer to solve. Liking the sound of this.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Radio Free Nintendo: PAX East Special #2
« on: March 31, 2010, 10:09:52 AM »
Very well done, guys. Just finished listening to the panel on my way to work. Yes, it started slow, with a wee bit too much time devoted to intro's I think but once the topic discussion started, you never looked back. That's just meant as a constructive feedback point for next time (Pax West, eh?).
And you know what? I really did feel like it was a podcast for grown-ups. It didn't need to be jokey or funny (so don't sweat that, James) and it would have been death to be self-referential. Nope, you guys brought thoughtful, knowledgeable, dare I say scholarly discussion to a topic that generally lacks that style of input. You definitely lived up to your panel's title and I found it thoroughly engrossing and, yes, entertaining. Well done and thank you.
And, a special shout-out to Karl. I am going to have to go back and listen to older podcasts now. Karl is great, very natural and showed some great discussion leadership. You can tell he used to host (at least, I think that's what he said). Don't get me wrong, I love the current podcast lineup of Johnny, Jon, Greg and James but when there's a gap, Bring Back Karl!!

I'm curious where everyone is? Are you all in the U.S.? I'm in Canada. We have about 10 Gamestop/EB Games around my vicinity, I've been to about 8 of them and I regularly frequent three of them. I've had nothing but excellent service from all of them. Really helpful, nice folks. Yes, they always ask if I want the game protection or they point out that the strategy guide is also on sale, but I respect that's their job and they always ask with a smile. Across the board, the employees are enthusiastic about games and there are hardly any I would call "kids". There are many times that the employee is not quite as knowledgeable about a particular game or release date as I am (I do extensive homework) but when they're not, they want to know what I know and thank me for the information. The line-ups can get a little long (they really have a slow system at the register that could be improved) but I often see them making efforts to handle big lines. Like, one employee will come out to the line, collect the empty boxes from people in line so he can go fetch the associated game discs. That way, the game is ready for purchase when you get to the register. Doesn't always happen but when there's a big line-up, they're usually pretty good about it.
Anyway, without exception, the store staff around here are reasonably knowledgeable, very friendly and really enjoy games and like to talk about them. I am shocked that people have such a lousy experience at other stores. Maybe its a Canada vs. U.S. thing?
Speaking of that, I wonder if the Monster Hunter Demo Disc is even available in Canada? Anyone know? I'll go to my local store at lunch and check but I'm wondering if anyone in Canada already knows?

Is there anything important to actually listen for or could one just play their stereo over their TV?
Haven't played this one yet but I do know it retains the ambient "diving" noises of the first game like the sound of your air tank (breathing) and water swishing. I think this is an important part of the game's immersion so I'm not happy with the suggestion that if I want to listen to my own music tracks, I can just turn down the game volume. Also, in the first game there were audio clues when there were areas to zoom-in on. A 'beeping" sound would go off and you could take a closer look and find smaller, rare fish or bits of treasure or collectibles. Not sure if that's the same in this sequel.

I'm abstaining from the real poll, but I'll try to rank my choices. This is pretty arbitrary though, and could easily be remixed if I did it again tomorrow.

1. Melee
2. Prime
3. RE4
4. Majora's Mask
5. Galaxy
6. Wii Sports

I'm very surprised to see you rank Melee over Prime because I've heard you gush over Metroid in general, and Prime in particular, many a time on the podcast. Not blaming you, just expressing surprise. And I take your note about the rankings changing tomorrow. I'm tempted to change my own rankings on a regular basis. Its like comparing apples to oranges or worse, trying to rank your own kids!

Good review, thanks. Looking forward to picking this one up. I may even consider getting the Wii Speak. Anyone have thoughts about that?

1. Metroid Prime
2. Mario Galaxy
3. RE4
4. Wii Sports
5. Smash Bros. Melee
6. Majora's Mask

Cannot wait for this game. Loved the first one. Only gripe is the lack of MP3 support. I used that a lot and enjoyed it. Diving to "In The Air Tonight" was surprisingly fun!  ;D

Metroid Prime, all the way. The music, the fluidity, the gameplay, the puzzles, the enemies, the brilliantly realized world. Its got it all going for it.

I should say that I have played all the games on the list just within the last 3 years. I was a lapsed gamer until the Wii came out, my last system being SNES. So, I have a "fresh gamer's' perspective on these titles. Probably explains why I don't care about Melee. I did not spend hours playing it with friends, though I have played it a bit with my kids and their friends. I have played much more of Brawl, again with my kids and their friends, but the game doesn't hook me that much. Its too chaotic for my taste.

RE4 is one of the few games that hooked me enough to play it through to completion without a break in between but I wouldn't call it game of the decade, just a really well executed action game.

Wii Sports is a hell of a lot of fun and more innovative than people give it credit for. And, because I'm old and seem to have such limited gaming time these days, I appreciate its pick-up-and-play quality. I'm very tempted to vote for it. But compared to Metroid Prime, it does not get the vote.

Galaxy is great and really trippy, playing upside down and all that. Plus the music is great. Also, I appreciate its pick-up-and-play quality. You can turn it on, fart around with a level or two and get in some quickie gaming fun. But, it lacks the depth and cohesion of Metroid Prime, so again, it does not get the vote. Even with Prime, I can put it in, blast away at a few stages, find a save point and be done for awhile. Its not exactly casual, but at least I can come and go.

Lastly, there's Zelda. Oh Zelda, I so want to love you as a franchise, I really do. And I have tried, oh how I have tried. I have started Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Windwaker, the original NES game, Zelda 2, Link to The Past and Phantom Hourglass. I've gotten pretty far in most. I've probably gotten farthest in Link to the Past, but I played it back when it came out. Zelda is one of those franchises I feel obligated to try and love because I can see the high quality written all over it. And yes, its fun and well thought out. I dunno what it is. After awhile, I just get bored with them. Its like there's just too much game or something. Anyway, all that to say that I didn't vote for Majora's Mask.

Sequel to de Blob confirmed by THQ for 'fiscal 2011'.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/106/1066461p1.html

Nice to have confirmation it is going to come at some point.
Yay a sequel! I love love love this game and return to it every few months. I think the music has much to do with my love. I listen to the soundtrack constantly. Its great pop-funk. Its also made me a big fan of The Bamboos. I hope they get The Bamboos to do the sequel's music (and they give them proper credit this time!)

EDIT - I'm listening to the soundtrack RIGHT NOW!!!

Early reports suggested the game would use MotionPlus, but it is unknown if the final product supports the peripheral.

IGN published a hands-on that confirms no motion plus. Also, local multiplayer but no online multiplayer.

If you click on the Wii logo on the top right corner of either of those sites, you go to a Japanese Nintendo Wii site that has an additional link for a "The Last Story" website, whatever that is. Its another "placeholder" site that has a piece of artwork and some music playing.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RetroActive #11 Poll -- Second Chance Edition
« on: February 01, 2010, 10:05:42 AM »
Thread is coming up right now. By the way, I talked this over with the RFN guys last night, and we are going to try to avoid putting mega-hits like Mario on future polls. I didn't have much choice this time, since the nominees were pre-selected. From here on, I want to have games in the poll that find a balance between not being too obscure (we want something people will actually play) and yet be less obvious and well known than a Mario game, of which SMRPG is our second so far.

This is an excellent idea. I support it (even though I have never played Super Mario RPG and may not have but for this RetroActive. At least you've got one newbie for this round.)

And thanks for putting up the thread. I should get a-posting soon.

One could also suggest that "art" encourages discussion as to its significance or meaning. It's pretty obvious what a hammer is for, but those cave paintings could mean a lot of different things.

A hammer is for illuminating the human condition, right?  ;D

@adadad - good points. Thanks for the thought-provoking, er, thoughts.
