A glowing written review; an 8.5 score.
Huh, how 'bout that?

Launch games I want:
Pilotwings
SSIV
Lego Star Wars 3
- maybe Steel Diver though I can wait for a price drop on that one I think. Even if its a year, I can still wait. Unless reviews and other feedback tell me its much better than it appears.

Has anybody played the Zombie game? Sounds like its trying too hard to be irreverent. But, might be fun.

Demo?

Yeah yeah, figured some smarty pants would say that. Thanks, Cap'n obvious.
Just looking for others' opinions too. You know what they say "it takes a village to raise a child, to overhype an undeserving game truly bash a bad game into the ground." (I may have got some of that quote mixed up.)

I will be buying.
Since the announcement of price and release date I have been setting aside $40 per week to cover the cost of the system and 1 to 2 games.
I have pre-ordered. I am stupidly excited for this thing and even if I only have a couple 3DS games to start, I also have a health backlog of DS games so i am good to go for awhile. Plus there are those funky built in games and apps.

I am ashamed that I want the Dolphin game. I want to dress up a dolphin. Is that wrong?

Downloaded the SuperNes (not NES, oops) original and have played a bunch. Man that game is hard, but so fun and satisfying. $8 well spent.

Loved you write-ups, James. Especially the Texas Holdem old lady comment. After your descriptions, I didn't need to bother with the boring ol' press release.

Can not wait for this game. Should I try out the NES PilotWings on the virtual console in anticipation?

Amamzon.com also has nintendogs+cats and Frogger 3DS (!) available for pre-order. No release dates for any of the games are posted.

Never played the first two so this game might get a higher mark from me. looking forward to it. I hear it is more exploration/puzzle oriented than say, other RPG's.

Well done, guys!

General Chat / Re: Podcast Recommendations
« on: September 14, 2010, 07:07:17 PM »
I'll throw my support behind the recommendations for DigiGods and SModCast. DigiGods is often funny and they cover tons of DVD and BluRay releases per episode, from the popular to the obscure, including foreign and television. And the hosts are long-time professional L.A. film critics. They really know their stuff, unlike the teenagers on IGN's other movie related podcats (which is embarrassing and awful). SModCast is Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier shooting the breeze about whatever they feel like and is often filthy and hilarious. Hit and miss, sure but I do laugh pretty hard most episodes.

I'll also point you to some CBC offerings which I think are pretty high quality. In particular, Quirks and Quarks (Science stuff) and Ideas (eclectic, thought provoking, intellectual). They sadly don't podcast all episodes of the broadcast version of Ideas but some of the better episodes get put up. Aside from those, CBC has podcasts of pretty much every show they do on radio and CBC radio is very good quality. I imagine BBC has similar offerings and I've been meaning to check out their podcast line-up because BBC also has very high quality radio.

General Gaming / Re: Game sales declining because games are boring
« on: June 28, 2010, 01:51:45 PM »
In fact one physical copy of a game could end up generating multiple duplicate sales of the same DLC.  There is your cut of used sales right there.
This is an excellent point and one I hadn't thought of before. I haven't seen it touted on other message boards, either. Good job!

I think the cycle of buy-new-trade-in-soon-after has little if anything to do with whether modern games are "good" or "worse than older games" or "have no replay value" or whatnot. I think it has everything to do with the culture of the new. By this I mean, popular society is always looking for the next big thing. The movies focus heavily on opening weekend; it is rare these days for a film to have "legs" and play for month at a time, like they used to. Cellphones are disposable, so are PC's. These are but a few obvious examples. Similarly, the masses want the newest, coolest video game. Gamestop preys on that cultural mentality by offering their best trade-in deals for the most recent and popular games. Its therefore a repeating cycle.

Considering the best-selling online-enabled game of all time is Mario Kart Wii

Really? MKWii sold better than all those Call of Doody and Haylo games and whatnot? Wow. I'm kind've shocked by that.

This game looks and sounds so great. I have been enjoying "Everything or Nothing" lately and have enjoyed other Bond games in the past (including Eurocom's Nightfire). My favourite so far has been From Russia With Love. I am not at all familiar with the original Goldeneye game; I know it only by reputation. Looking forward to fun online and local multiplayer.

Though it is kind of like a naked person putting on socks and calling it an effort to get dressed.
If the naked person was a hot, 25 year old co-ed, then Nintendo's online would be just fine, thank you.

If the socks were athletic tube socks, so much the better.
(erm, perhaps I've said too much...)

Not that you aren't welcome... just thought it was a little odd to see someone I thought was a newbie randomly taking a shot at James.
I see your point. 2 things:
1. I couldn't resist the (rather obvious) joke.
2. That damn podcast makes you feel like you know those guys. I am imposing false familiarity.

Let me see if I can help with the translation here:

"We (Nintendo) are not happy with our online offering. Why? Because we could be making so much more money out of it. For example, we've really missed the boat with micro-transaction possibilities. We could have sold additional tracks for MarioKart and additional maps and characters for Smash Bros. We won't let that pass us by again, I can assure you (the investors) of that."

"What's that? Online play? Voice-chat? Connecting identifiable players efficiently? Yeah, we kind of don't give a **** about that stuff unless we can make more money. Can we do a micro-transaction to enable voice-chat functionality? Hmmm, now we're interested."
