Mafia III: Day One
« on: March 07, 2006, 04:14:31 AM »
It was one of those lush mornings that makes Rio de Setembro such a popular tourist attraction.  The city's flora combined with the radiance of the sun in a manner that made the trees and flowers glow.  It was impossible to see anything but peace during these moments when Nature flaunted her great beauty.  But, within those trees, those forests, those jungles, was a ferocity and a darkness that thrived on death.  Such was the way of the world, for all life there was pending death.

Fear, anger, and retribution dwelled among the towns of Louieville and Dagafabawat, and was now casting a cloud over the tropical Rio.  The current violence provoked by the Ninjas and Pirates was killing not only the tourism industry, but the townies themselves.

The townspeople, through what a vocal minority called propaganda, voted overwhelming in favor for a new trial process that would help weed out the most unsavory locals.  The hidden Pirates, the stealthy ninjas, they would all be dead soon.  The townies understood this process would not be without tragedy, but the tradeoff would be a peaceful, prosperous city once again.

Voting begins now

Wandering awoke, naked, on the beach. His body was ghostly white and horribly wrinkled. He had no memory.

Toruresu woke up, hoping that today would be the day were he made enough money to expand his small store. He went to the bathroom, showered, got dressed, and opened his window, revealing a big sign that said "ABIERTO/OPEN". He then proceeded to look around the store, passing inventory in his mind.

"Hmm...canned food...fishing rods...seeds...souvenier figurines...souvenier shirts..."

To his surprise, everything seemed to be in place. This could be the day, that is his hope.

"Ah, the heat.  It is... invigorating, no?"

Deguello stood on the balcony of his hotel.  Rio de Setembro allows such luxuries to those of moderate means.

"It truly is great to be in this hot, sweaty, passionate place, no?"

"O senhor, seu papel está aqui," sounded from outside the room.

"Ay, I have a visitor.  Come in, please."

A small boy of 10 or so years entered with a newspaper in tow.  He had separated it from the others in a tiny wagon.

"O senhor, seu jornal está aqui. Elogios do Toalete Impetuoso."

"Menino, we have other eyes watching and other ears hearing.  It would be quite rude for them to have to read a dictionary, and Babelfish is too many clicks away.  For the sake of our glorious conversation, be a good menino and switch to the other channel of your simulcast."

"Mas senhor, eu sei somente o portuguĂŞs. Eu nĂŁo falo o inglĂŞs."

Deguello exasperatedly sighed and had to accept that, despite being a minor character himself, not everybody is able to communicate with the readers.  Even if he himself became the target of the vicious ninjas, the filthy pirates, or the kneejerk reactions of the easily led townsfolk, the fact that he speaks modern English makes him important in the big picture.  Suddenly, inspiration knocked on the door to Deguello's mind.  He knows how he can be more important.

"I have it.  I must outlast to others.  My character will become more important once the others are knocked out.  As the number of people go down, my importance and influence goes up!" Deguello cackled.

"Por favor, senhor. Faça exame do papel e pare-o de molestar a galinha."

Deguello complied and put it down, free to roam the streets.  The paper was the Livro-razĂŁo De Setembro, much to Deguello's dismay, as he was expecting The New York Times.

"This paper is terrible.  It smells of fish.  Ay, what is this story?"

Deguello eyed the Headline.  "Poderia vocĂŞ ser um ninja ou um pirata?"

Deguello thought to himself,  "I could!  You never know if you truly are a member of their secret organizations.  The Ninja are so secretive, and the Pirates so disorganized, that ANYONE could be a member.  It could be possible."

"É você importante, senhor?"

"I can't answer that, menino.  There will come a day when the answers will come, my importance will be found."

"Eu penso que o matarĂŁo porque vocĂŞ datilografa demasiado."  The boy left.

Deguello didn't hear, because he was enthralled in the funny pages of the Times.

"Ahahaha, this Family Circus never gets old.  How can he come up with so many funny ideas after 46 years?  He even sources Peanuts as his inspiration!  I can like both!  Some of Keane's ideas are BETTER than Schulz's!"

Unfortunately, he said those words too loud on the balcony.  Some streetwalkers heard him and began to charge the front door.  He had only been in the room for 30 minutes, but already he was on the run for his life.

"That's okay.  Once I get more important... nobody can stop me."

Maryjane wakes up from a night filled with smoke blocking his memory of exactly what happened. The two naked girls in the bed suggest it was a good night. He realizes he has an important job to do. He gets dressed and head out the door, realizing that he is not in his own house. As he walks the long road home he watches carefully knowing that people are always after him. Wandering the streets he knows neither whom is foe nor ally. He secretly wonders, as he inhales his self-rolled cigarette, if he has an allies. Do any exist in this cold world he is a part of?

Suddenly, a big wagon passes Deguello as he escaped the roving streetwalkers.  There was sweet music coming from it.  Deguello felt compelled to follow it, as the pied piper is not the only one possessing moldeies of attraction.  On the wagon, a band was playing the strangest calyspo/polka mix.

"What is this band?"

"We are called Wandering spirits."

"TOO HOKEY!" Deguello shouts.  He threw fits of rage at the very name.  He began to imagine...  If Wandering were to run for public office... but that office is of Town Jackass... he would vote Wandering in a heartbeat.

"He annoyed me more than that spanish speaking kid."

"We speak Portuguese here," a random shopkeeper added.  "Didn't you know that?  *GASP*  Your plot is not cohesive to the last episode!"

Right then, more streetwalkers appeared.  Now Deguello was running again, but he remembered,

"I will be more important."

"Bob Dole….Bob Dob.  Bob—AAAH!"

TYP awoke from his horrible nightmare with a startle.  He glanced at the clock.

"6:30 PM? Oh crud!"

That was the third day in a row he had wasted by sleeping in.  Having missed out on the day's activities, he decided to focus on paperwork before heading out for an evening stroll.  Hearing screams from Wandering's accusers and rumors of recent bizarre behavior, TYP couldn't help but wonder if the fellow weren't part of the tough crowd.  He decided it may be best if Wandering were put on trial—just in case.

The heat was unbearable.

I opened the club late, hoping that the sticky heat might subside, and that those pirates would have found someplace else to go drinking.  My club has been frequented by them far too much, and the dance floor needs enough scrubbing without having the blood of one of my customers blood spread all over it.

The ceiling fans were making a difference now, but as soon as the band starts to play, the bodies will fill in and the air will thicken again.  I tried to focus on my duties at the bar and the few honest sailors who had just come off the ships to flirt before collapsing in their rooms.

The band's lead singer, BlackNMild, enters.  His shirt is open wide, from the heat of his ego, rather than the warm tropical evening.  His arms are as far around his group of half-dressed girls as he can manage - as usual.

"You're in early," I say.  "I'm not giving you any more advances before shows.  If your whores think you're good for the cash, you can pay them after you've earned your share." He casts a challenging glance my way, and walks to the back patio for a smoke.

Wandering walks into the club hushes the crowd.

"Si usted me pulsa traga, yo llega a ser más de gran alcance que usted podría imaginarse posiblemente!

"Oh, and also, if anyone knows a good defense attorney? It's not exactly fair that I've become the victim of vote-for-the-random-guy-who-screwed-us-over-last-game-casuse-we-have-no-leads-as-to-who-might-be-mafia-on-the-first-day thing. Thanks!"

Aurion mysteriously appears at a stool at the bar, catching Bloodworth offguard...With a smile on his face, Aurion happily yells:

"A pint of milk, if you please!"

Everyone within earshot pauses and glances over at Aurion, who looks around confused...Bloodworth, not even fazed by the request, goes into the backroom and comes back with a full mug...

"What's wrong with milk?," Aurion whimpered, as tears began to well up in his eyes...Bloodworth calmly tried to console him as their voices slowly disappeared into the atmosphere of the noisy bar...

Hey, I just found a problem with this setup.

What if Wandering is Mafia or the cop or whatever and he wants to share any info he has before he dies?  There's nothing stopping him from telling all--he's still alive.

So if he's mafia and he was betrayed by his teammates he has the next 8 or so hours to tell everyone about them.  Or if he's the cop (and let's pretend a fews days have passed and he checked out who some people were) he can share that info without worrying about telling the wrong person and getting himself killed.

I'm going back to italics.

Wandering sighed as he sat in his hotel room, sweat dripping down the folds of the pasty, disfigured face he hid behind his hood. Though a little ocean breeze came in through the darkness of the open window, it was still far too hot for Wandering. The only comfort came from a slow moving rotary fan on the ceiling.

They hate me because I'm different, Wandering thought. Because I look different and can barely speak the language and come from a place far, far away. And they call themselves civil. And they make a show of being fair and open.  But I see the way they stare as I walk down the street. As I dance. I see their forced smiles, their happy greetings, yes. But I also hear their hushed whispers. Their clucking tongues.

Wandering closes his eyes, sighs, and drifts off to sleep.

Infernal consumed a block of cheese. "This cheese is outstanding, I only wish I had more" he muttered before falling asleep on a pile of rusty canned small goods. "Oh no my spine"

How is it that people are already willing to put another to death?

Normally I would point out that we're just picking people who screwed us over last game (or at least tried to).  But I won't do that because then you might vote for me.

Well should certain people be killed right away, I think some people's positions of power may be exposed, since their grudges were already pronounced in a certain other thread

So, is wandering going to die today, or do I have to pay off one of the Mafias to kill him for me?  If wandering lives, then $1 to the godfather of whichever mafia kills him.

I will have my revenge.  haha!
