I wouldn't say that was true, at least not from playing it on the PC. Sure, the game isn't by any means perfect, and some people find the initial quests a little lengthy and tedious - gathering plants etc However, I think that it was definitely one of the better games of last year, and one of the few commercial RPGs released in 2002, that I keep coming back to. It's a beautiful game and it is so easy to lose yourself in it for an afternoon or several...I lost a few weeks of last summer to it, and still didn't get amazingly far in the game. For me, it is one of those games that lasts for ages, because there is no rush to complete it - it's fairly slow paced, and is ideal for people that like to wander around and explore.

Neverwinter Nights has been mentioned here, and I have to say that fits the bill of "over hyped and didn't deliver" far better than Morrowind.

Basically, if you're after a game with instant gratification and amazing action - don't get Morrowind. If you want a challenging and immersive journey through a massive world - do get it.

General Gaming / Who still loves their PC over consoles and why?
« on: April 26, 2003, 09:36:51 PM »
For the last 5/6 years I have been primarily a PC gamer. I love my PC. Many of the game I play on the PC just wouldn't work as well on a console, and that isn't from a graphics point of view. I don't value graphics over gameplay, quite the opposite. I like my games large, immersive and replayable. I am a big RPG fan and there are some quality RPG's out there for the PC - a fair few of them are shareware releases however.

I like consoles though - I always seem to go through phases where I won't play any games on the PC for a while and I turn to consoles for amusement in these periods. Also, consoles keep me entertained when I'm ill and don't feel like getting up and sitting at my PC. Nothing better than snuggling up under a duvet with a mug of tea and some snacks and playing Zelda or a game like Shenmue.

I think however that when I finally get my GameCube in the next couple of weeks (I have a platinum GC with Zelda: The Wind Waker on pre-order), I will probably divide my gaming time more equally between console and PC, since there aren't an amazing amount of PC games due in the immediate future, that I am desperate to play. So it goes....

General Gaming / Why do nintendo fans hate Xbox so much?
« on: April 26, 2003, 06:30:44 AM »
Personally, I am not interested in buying an X Box, mainly because most of the games I would play on it, are on other systems, including the PC, and I don't see the point in paying for a system which at the end of the day, I may use for one or two games exclusively available for that system. The PS2 has the advantage of more games I would play, and also being able to play PS1 games so I can trade in or sell my PS and still play my old favourites.

The GameCube wins for me because I prefer the type of games..in a lot of ways, many of the games on Nintendo systems, are just much more fun...

General Chat / have you seen the ring

I haven't seen the remake of The Ring yet, but would like to, as I have seen the Japanese original and very much enjoyed it. I wouldn't say it scared me, although it was creepy in places and I definitely enjoyed it as something a bit different.

As has already been said, it depends on what you're getting the game for - X-Box or PC. The PC version is definitely the one to go for if you have the choice, although you will need a fairly decent set up - the game wants a fair amount of RAM and definitely a decent graphics card. I noticed a massive difference when I upgraded from 256Mb RAM to 512Mb and also, I upgraded soon after from a GeForce 2 MX card to a GeForce 4 Ti4200 128Mb. That made a great difference (shiny water whoo! ).

As for the game itself - it's definitely worth getting if you like a very immersive game, with lots to do and essentially, something that will take you a fairly long time to get through. For the PC version there is the Tribunals expansion, added to all the user created mods and bits and pieces out there, plus there is another expansion in the works.

General Chat / What was your first exposure to gaming?
« on: April 26, 2003, 04:32:20 AM »
The first game I played was Space Invaders on an old Amstrad that my parents bought for me at the age of 5. After that I played some kids text adventure type games on that and then, at the age of about 7/8, something like that, I had a NES. I was pretty much hooked then, particularly by Mario. Then I had an Amiga and the real addiction set in, with games like SuperFrog. Since then I have never been without a game of some description - usually several in fact. For the past 5 years or so I have mainly been a PC gamer, and my favourite games of all time have been on the PC - Dungeon Keeper, Bard's Tale, Alpha Centauri, Quake, Fallout, The Longest Journey. Dungeon Keeper was a game I played after a short period of non gaming - it bought me back to full on gaming and kept me there, so I guess I have that game to thank/blame for me being where I am today - still addicted to gaming and addicted to posting on forums about it.
