EA Reveals "Playground" for Wii

EA takes a little-league swing at Wii Sports.

 Though the game won't be "officially" announced until later this week, EA has revealed to IGN (and the world) an upcoming Nintendo-exclusive franchise titled "EA Playground" for both the Nintendo DS and the Wii.    


The game, which is in development at EA Canada, focuses on the kinds of games kids play on a playground. Favorites like dodge-ball, RC-Cards, and (the not so favorite) tether-ball can be played in Playground. Additionally, each version of the game will feature exclusive games. In the case of the DS version, two of the exclusive games are titled "Bug Hunt" and "Spit Balls". No Wii-exclusive games are mentioned in the interview. All of the games are described as "easy to pick up and play". In the case of the Wii version, all of the games will be remote-only.    


Both versions of the game support multiplayer modes. The DS version has a wireless function, and the Wii game has a party mode. Support for Nintendo WiFi Connection is not mentioned in the article, but the interviewee seems to spin his answers away from that possibility.    


The game is focused on multiplayer, but does offer a single player mode as well. This quest involves a hunt for stickers that are earned by playing the playground games, exploring the playground, and completing special challenges.    


EA will "officially" announce the game later this week, at which point Nintendo World Report will have more details.

EA graphics = not even trying.

I'm a little concerned they have yet to announce original IPs aimed at the older market...but this is still good?

Tether Ball could be the sleeper hit of the Fall.

But where's the Wi-Fi multiplayer play EA?!?! This is FALL. This is NOT ACCEPTABLE WITHOUT WI-FI!

 The first shot with the characters looked pretty bad. But the school wide shot actually makes the game look pretty good. I hope they keep it looking like that. Wifi multiplayer would have made this a lot more interesting. If someone can just make an online multi of wii sports, that'd be insane. I've been wanting to school my friend in boxing and tennis so bad... but atleast its good to see some games being made. Wonder what other EA games are coming... I've liked Madden and Blur a ton so far.

Hear of a title called Boogie? That seems to be aimed at adults (the same way The Nightmare Before Christmas and Invader Zim were aimed towards older fans).

Why are people complaining about the visuals? Anyone take a look at Wiisports lately? That game is a perfect example that you can have less than stellar visuals but it doesn't really matter.

Boogies appeals to all ages, I'd say. It's not childish but it's not aimed at the older market either.

NW, don't just drop one idea because someone else is doing it.  If this type of game is what you want to do, think about ways of doing that may be unique.  Though it may be difficult to think of something differentiates itself from EA's project, perhaps you can realize something deeper, that will make it much better and a much more valuable of an experience.  Even adding a deep story into what seems like a shallow game might do worlds for it.  But let me say, if you have a unique idea, and someone else confirms they have the same idea, you shouldn't just drop it, especially if you don't want to.  Just work on doing what you think is best, and unless you're insane, like David Jaffe, it will probably work out after time.

Of course, if you were planning this game on the premise that it would be one-of-a-kind, just throw what I said out of the window, and brainstorm some other things.

They need to ditch the Scary Garbage Pail Kids looking characters and just replace them with Miis.  Everything else is fine but those characters are going to kids or me nightmares.

Actually, it did involve a deep story mode where instead of playing as a kid you play as an adult who (along with a bunch of other adults) takes the recess games seriously. It would've started off innocently enough with games that children play (hide and go seek, four square, off the wall, etc.) then move up to more difficult games that teens would play in High School (such as scavenger hunts or ultimate frisbee.)
There would've been a multiplayer mode too...

As far as I know this is a pretty unique idea. I've seen games where children play sports, but never recess games. It's kind of funny that in my proposition that I wrote for the game I mocked EA releasing edition after edition of the same sports games and then they went and used the same concept as my idea. I'm not claiming that they stole it but it's really a "D'OH" moment when someone else beats you to the punch.
