Nintendo Gaming / RE:Star Fox Assault
« on: February 02, 2005, 10:45:26 AM »
The on-foot stuff was more fun that I expected.  I didn't play Rebel Strike, so I can't compare, but the on-foot stuff is still fast and furious - it feels like something of a cross between Jet Force Gemini and Smash TV.

The cool dynamic of it is that you will often have to jump out of your tank, run inside and blow something up, and then run back out to your tank.  The weapon switching is slightly annoying, but otherwise it's fun and adds some variety.

But I'm only about 90 minutes into it, which means I'm on the 4th level or so.  Thus far: it's big fun, but might be more of a renter than a buyer.   More evolutionary than revolutionary, in terms of how it compares to the 64 title.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Four Horsemen Of the Apocalypse???

Well, you don't... but I can't imagine they would have secured the rights and brought over the key developers unless they had enough venture capital to see the project through to completion.

To be fair, that's basically speculation on my part.  But a small company like this probably won't even try to secure a publisher until the game is in beta, and will stay under the radar until they have one lined up.  Not to mention that it may have to move to the next generation for timing issues.

In other words, either you'll hear about it when it's done, or it'll end up in the graveyard of great games that will never be, like Prey and Dead Rush.

Nintendo Gaming / Killer 7 delayed... again

I'm starting to think this game might secretly suck.  The premise is great, the art style is great... but it keeps getting pushed back, presumably to retool the gameplay.

Those are multiplayer games.  I was talking specifically about adventure games.

Obviously, there's little need for a story in a racing or sports game.

I realize you're being intentionally obtuse, but watching a movie isn't the same as feeling like you're a part of a story.  Nothing can do that quite like a good game.

Besides, I'm not saying that gameplay isn't important, I'm just saying the value of storytelling in games is underrated.  When you get both of these things combined, you get instant classics like Conker and Wind Waker.  Games that are all gameplay and no story are ultimately forgettable.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.  I had the pleasure of playing Skies on the Dreamcast, it was easily one of the 2 best RPGs I've ever played (neck and neck with the glorious Grandia 2).

As far as Metroid Prime, I think I'm the only person on the planet who didn't like that game.  It's wierd - I love FPS games, and I love adventure games.... but I found MP boring.  I guess, when it comes down to it, I'll take story over gameplay, and Metroid had no story at all.

I am looking forward to Tales, although I'm a little intimidated by 40+ hour games

Hey all,

So, I've played and loved PoP, BG&E, and I'm just about to beat the wonderful Wind Waker.  I also played and forced myself to beat the mediocre StarFox Adventures.

My question is:  which of the "second-tier" adventure games are good?  The ones I had in mind (all of which are dirt, dirt cheap) were: The Hobbit, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, and Harry Potter: Sorceror's Stone (the Eurocomm one).

Any of 'em any good?  I know PGC gave Hobbit a good review, but all the other magazines were really wishy-washy about it.

Thanks,

HH
