NO WAY

This is how they're going to market Nintendogs? Zelda delayed. GameBoy Micro outrageously priced. And now this God awful ad. If the Revolution wasen't coming this moday the 22nd I would fear for us Followers of the Shroomâ„¢ Such little hope do I have. It's almost as if Nintendo couldn't sell pussies to prisoners, let alone market a game. Maybe I just don't like being compared to a 13year old boy. "Play on Playaz".

/end rant.

I am left with not knowing what to think after watching that commercial.....

They should replace that boy with another little girl who was playing with her pup that then signaled her that her friends were near, which led her to getting excited and run to the door, let all her friends in and then have 'puppy time' in the living room, then goto close ups of gameplay and dogs interacting.

I would think that would be the better commercial and at least targeted at a demographic that exist.

Play on Playas!?!? the whole dialog of the commercial just seemed out of place and that last line just confirmed it....

Uhh, that's an ad for one of the biggest releases on a new handheld? Looks more like a junior high school movie project, edited using IMovie. "Off the hook"?? "Playas?? Why NOA why?? And the kid's acting makes it seem even more contrived.

What's the use of putting this on TV, anyway? To prove that the execs haven't gone through Marketing 101? I had such high hopes after the WiFi ad; something as clever and something that doesn't sound forced or as if it is trying it's best to be "cool". Something like that ad with more gameplay and more info on the game, and it would be perfect. But now we get this? Why is it that Nintendo's marketing so often belies the greatness of the game? Why? Why??

Can't Nintendo just be, you know, not f*cking retarded?

Personally I don't know why the entire marketing department at NOA hasn't been fired considering NOA's complete and utter failure to create virtually any positive brand name with the Cube.  Perhaps they'll open their eyes if this, a HUGE game in Japan, bombs in North America.

That would be oh so sad, and also just reacting way too late. This is a problem that shouldn't be carried over onto the DS.  They already buried the cube on the bottom shelf of the entertianment center in ther kids playroom, they don't need to do the same thing with the DS.

Do you know what this commercial reminds me of?

So I'm at my house when my friend Mike calls. and he asks me what I'm eating for breakfast. I tell him Reese's and he says YOURE EATING CANDY FOR BREAKFAST?!?!?!

Not candy.

Reese's puff CEREAL. So I hand him a bowl...

Yeah... I really hate that kid's acting. Urg. Nintendo REALLY has to show more gameplay, and brag about critical acclaim or something like that. Brag that it got a perfect score from a magazine that has only given a perfect score to 4 other games in its whole history. That's what really gets people's attention. Nintendo PLEASE stop trying to be so "creative" with your commercials. URG I HATE THAT KID'S ACTING. It's so laaame. It seriously makes me cringe. Why'd they decide to show off the "barking" feature of Nintendogs? They left out the voice commands! How did this commercial get approved? It's commercials like these that help great games like Metroid Prime 2 not sell as well as it should. Urg that commercial wasn't as bad as this though. Terrible.

Nintendo apparently missed the fact that adults and girls are far more impressed with this game than whiny thirteen year old boys.  How does this appeal to that market?  Why aren't there cool Nintendogs ads all over Animal Planet?  Why the heck can't they just let the game's features speak for themselves.  It's a pet simulator, not Axe for kids.

Here's the correct way to market Nintendogs to young male teenagers:

The ad opens with a young boy seeing his sister playing the game.  He secretly wants his own Nintendog, but is embarrassed.  He sneaks into the game store and sheepishly buys his own copy when the store is nearly empty.  He trains the dog in the privacy of his room at home, but takes the DS with him all the time.  While he's in the school cafeteria, Bark Mode suddenly goes off...he didn't even mean to have it activated!  A cute little girl from across the room walks over and asks if their dogs can play together.  He bravely pulls out his DS in front of the whole room, and they trade gifts and have their dogs meet.  Cut to a later scene, as the boy and girl are behind the bleachers making out.

It's honest, innocent, and will appeal very strongly to a large portion of the young male teenager audience.

One thing that is really odd about this is that Nintendo made a big deal about how they're going to target new demographics and get people who don't normally play games to play.  Yet here we have the ultimate non-game that's a huge success in Japan and who is the commercial aimed at?  Traditional gamers, in this case the young pre-teen/early teen male demographic which has been a strong gaming market from the very beginning.  You can't market a non-game to traditional gamers.  Traditional gamers are not going to be that interested in this.  The whole point of making games like this is attract non-gamers.  If they just wanted to target males then first person shooters, fighters, sports, and racing games will do the trick.

Maybe Nintendo's idea is that girls are going to buy this anyway so they might as well target boys in the ad to try to get both demographics buying the game.  The problem with that logic is that the general public doesn't look at release lists and know anything about a game until they see a commercial.  Much like how Nintendo's Cube ads often required the viewer to be familiar with the game to even know what the hell was going on, this ad requires people to know about Nintendogs ahead of time.  They don't.  If everyone already knew then they wouldn't have to advertise in the first place.  The target demographic is going to be completely unaware that a game designed for them has been released.

A good game ad should give an idea of what the game is about and tell the viewer why they should buy it.  Nintendo's commercials do neither.

Yeah, let's just try to manage that within what?  Thirty seconds or less?
Also, I see no reason to explain what a game is to somebody.  I've never seen a gaming commercial that does, Nintendo or otherwise.  They see the product, a video game.  That's as narrow as the category goes for non-gamers (the only ones who'd need to be explained to).  After they know it's a video game, all you have to do is make it seem as cool as possible.  This commercial does not do that, no, but your logic is flawed and would not only waste time, but bore people.
For example, the Zelda commercial could very easily just be a trailer of gameplay footage.  That wouldn't explain what it is by any means, but it would certainly intrigue plenty of people.

Ian's right about Nintendo marketing this to the wrong group.  If traditional gamers are interested, they'll see other commercials and pick the game up.

Maybe the problem is that Nintendo of America is at odds with the Non-gamer plans of NCL?  I think the marketing GENIUSES at NOA have a pre-made excuse if this game fails, though: it's just not geared toward the North American market.  If Super Mario Bros came out and sold 2 million in Japan and then did terribly in North America, then Nintendo might finally get the message about the marketing.

Cutesy is better than this, at least that was honest.  What Nintendo really ought to try is plain.  Show us cute puppies!  Maybe show us real life cute puppies sniffing at DS's with puppies on them.  The game is about cute puppies!
That's my opinion, not yours.

Yes. I can't believe I had to get to the second page to see the most obvious suggestion: puppies!

Since the marketing graduates (read: college drunks) at Nintendo have failed at their fake career, here's the forula for advertising a game about puppies, God's most cutest invention like EVAR. PUPPIES!

Yes, puppies. And more puppies. Beagle puppies (so cute). Bull terrier puppies (so so cute). And some other puppies of varying breed. Mixed with shots of ingame puppies. Real puppies investigating the ingame puppies as a real puppy would. And throw in some more flagrantly unnecessary shots of puppiness. The inherent cuteness would be overwhelming. Everyone with a heart would immediately rush out to the stores to pick up the game.

And the commercial would be cheap. Forget all that crap about the difficulty of working with animals. These are puppies. Everything they do is both cute and valuable. And there would be no child actors. Come on. I'm sure there's an agency out there willing to film some damn puppies with their DSes.

If the comercial is actually famous in NA it would be awesome, but if it really isnt it would be a commercial for just Zelda fans, who are going to buy the game anyway, making the commercial futile.

There's "Demographic Advertising" where, for example, a FPS is targeted to FPS fans - if you know what you want, then an ad directed to your needs is going to jump out.
Then there's "Nintendo Advertising" who avoid the simple route and choose to be different, for the sake of being different. The end result is that ad.

but all joking aside, has it ever dawned on you that you may be a little more out of touch with those younger than you than you thought? Or that YOU aren't as cool, popular, or in-style as you previously thought(speaking to those that are younger)?  With that said, i think Nintendo just might be approaching this right and that they will reach who they are targeting with these commercials.

But thats enough talk from me, I'll just let the sales #'s speak for themselves.

I can see it now...  The game will still sell awesomely, and instead of NOA getting any praise Ian (or any other internet CEO) will say...

"Nintendogs sold well despite NOA trying to ruin it.  They just lucked out."

This will be further proof that some people will always think they are smarter than Nintendo, despite any proof otherwise.

"I don't think I ever saw a single commercial for Halo at Xbox launch..."

Not only were there ads like Deguello mentioned but those ads showed exactly what Nintendo's never show yet many of us feel they should.  The Halo ad had quite a lot of gameplay footage (why not?  Graphics are the Xbox's specialty) and tons of "BEST GAME EVAR!!111" quotes from reviews and such.

"has it ever dawned on you that you may be a little more out of touch with those younger than you than you thought? Or that YOU aren't as cool, popular, or in-style as you previously thought(speaking to those that are younger)?"

That's very likely.  I don't fall for obvious attempts at advertising trying to sound cool and never did even when I was a kid.  But I was never really cool as a kid so I was kind of outside of that culture.  I do tend to assume that most people's reactions to ads are similar to my own but that's realistically not the case.  So this ad might work despite it, in my mind, being incredibly cheesy and forced.  It does have a lot of the problems that Cube commercials have and it's very easy to prove that Cube commercials don't work.  The sales, or more accurately LACK of sales, backs that up.  So does that type of advertising work for portables but not consoles or are GBA and DS sales unrelated to ads entirely?

Case in point...

I'm 29 years old. I finally had the chance to play Nintendogs at a demo kiosk yesterday. I loved it so much that I went back to EBGames 2 or 3 times just to play with the puppies. The last time I was playing, a mother and 2 young daughters (I'd say one was in her early teens and the other was probably between 8 and 10). As I was playing, I heard the younger girl say to her mother and older sister: "You know my Birthday is soon. I know what I want. I want the Nintendo that you can touch. The DS. I want the DS and the dog game. I have to have those puppies."

It was at the point, I stopped playing. The girl was about 3 feet away. I told her that 'Nintendogs' was on the DS I was playing, handed her the stylus and said "have fun". I didn't sick around to hear her sales pitch to mom after getting to play with the Nintendogs. I honestly do believe that this game will sell systems. It's very hard to not like it...and I'm a cat person. LOL

Is there any chance that Nintendo shipped the title early so it's in stores tomorrow? I don't know if I can wait until Tuesday.
PEACE--->Rhoq

Although that ad really does suck balls, might have we crossed the threshold into "un-cool" and "old people"? Has cool changed that much since I was younger(I'm 27)? NO!!! That just sucked all kinds of goat ass.  Snoop Dogg or Bow Wow for the "boy" spot. Paris Hilton, Hillary Duff or Ciara for the "girl" ad. I think I still know what cool is.  "Pogs, super-soakers and Goosebumbs books".

Upon further reflection I ended up thinking the same, it doesnt change the fact that the commercial sucked for me , but also I dont think I know more about marketing than Nintendo. Its very true what someone already said that word of mouth is very very important, in a poll I read recently that was the number one way to decide what game to buy among gamers. But I still cant think of someone watching that commercial and deciding to go out and buy Nintendogs, it  doesnt even show the game that much! :S

So you say you want to see puppies playing with their DS's

THAT's how they should of advertised it. ;__; Just film a bunch of puppies walking and rolling all over some DS' in a nice clean room. Or show a bunch of those $5 virtual pet things, followed by that Dogz PC game, then Nintendogs. THEN HERE COMES MONEY.

But noooo.

I remember having a Tamagochi back in the day. I need to be convinced that this $40 DS game is leagues ahead of those LCD gimmicks just as much as girl gamers and adults need to be convinced. I don't think that was any better than those Who Are You commercials geared for the 12 and under crowd.

I thought up a commercial idea.  I don't normally care for such things and hardly think about them, but meh.

What about one where it had a guy treating the DS like a puppy?  Like the DS was bouncing around and being annoying, the guy leashes it up and takes it for a walk, throws a frisbee and it fetches it, etc.  It would be pretty hilarious the way I'm picturing it in my head.  It would piss on the floor.  BAD NINTENDO DS, BAD.  And then after 30 seconds of wtf-inspired insanity, it would show the guy playing Nintendogs on his DS and highlighting a bunch of gameplay.

Seems wonderfully ludicrous to me, like a Willy Wonka vision or something.
I must find a way to use "burninate" more in my daily speech.

I really like that idea, Strell.  I think they can cut down the funny half of the footage to about 15-20 seconds and reserve the rest for gameplay stuff.

I also think a running of the bulls type thing, except with puppies, would awesome as well.  It'd make no sense, but it'd be awesome and cute.  Follow with gameplay footage.

Edit: Oh wait, I think someday did that a while back with cats for something.  Genius, that
Still, a puppy stampede would rock.

I'm behind that campaign. You share a similar appreciation for the cuteness of puppies. Who doesn't? Oh yes, the fools at Nintendo. You'll make a fine candidate.

Oh, and this ad confirms that the Super Mario Sunshine commercial wasn't satire. Dirty be better than clean, playaz.

How about this commercial:
A guy is walking a puppy, then the puppy starts jumping and barking,
scene cuts to random person who sees a man walking his DS when its start jumping and barking
the guy looks to his right and there is a dog park, so he goes inside, his dog is playing with all the other dogs in the park (people throwing frisbees, petting thier puppies, and picking up poop)
scenes cuts back to random person who sees a bunch of DS's in place of all the puppies mentioned above(a serious look of disbelief on persons face)
Thats when the announcer chimes in [insert announcement here] and actual gameplay footage rolls

I think that would make a good series of commercials for the adults

*idea obviously inspired by strell

edit: The original idea to this thought was that the random person would only see someone playing with a DS and wouldn't be involved in the world as seen through the eyes of the guy with the DS

or

that the random person would only see the guy dragging a DS behind him(scraping & scratching) at first
and a bunch of people standing in a park with a bunch of DS's littering the ground.

it doesnt necesarly need to be an ad with an adult talking to something/someone, it could be like one of the examples given already. The man/woman is ashamed of raising a virtual dog but met through the bark mode a sexually appealing member of the opposite sex which happens to have the game also.
