Episode 34: Mental for Wii U

Digital download hesitation and Wii U hype.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/30119

Hello, please have a seat. A pleasure to see you all once again! Welcome to episode 34 of Connectivity. This week's show is svelte, featuring two segments.

First up, Scott, Mike, Andy and Zach talk about weird endings to old 90's sitcoms about dinosaurs... then they read listener mail! So, something for everyone. The gang tackles issues of digital download trepidation and how Smash Brothers can learn a thing or two from the old WCW wrestling games on the N64. First thing: the ability to make characters' faces bleed.

After that, Carmine and Pedro join Scott and Zach to talk about Wii U hype, or lack thereof. The guys also talk about the system that had them freaking out in the past. How stoked are you, fair listener, for the Wii U? Let us know!

Be sure to check out our twice-a-week News Digest show, in which we break the down the past few days' news in a timely manner. Hooray relevance! As always, you can click here to send us listener mail. We'll read it, I swear (probably) (well, maybe). Until next week....

As Iwata further said, the games being tied to a system referred to not being able to share it with other systems. It has nothing to do with the lack of a centralized account/other stuff you guys are pissed about.

I stand by the fact that Nintendo can't possibly be dumb enough to not include a centralized account. However, if we don't hear anything during E3, then I'll join the hatestorm. Until then, I'm focused on the 3DS VC debacle.

I guess my point was that the existence of a centralized account doesn't just magically make things better.  I still want to be able to redownload my games on my new 3DS should my system get stolen or lost.  A centralized account doesn't guarantee that at all.

For the Hype section in regards to the Dreamcast code name, yes, it was Katana.

And speaking of the hype segment, very well done! I really enjoyed listening to the stories the guys had about N64 heartbreak, Cube Clubs, and circular arguments on internet forums and chatrooms around the time of the GCN.

For me, the GameCube is probably the most hyped I had ever been for a system release ever (next to the N64DD, RIP!). I knew all of the technical specs and names, kept track of every move Nintendo made, and truly believed that the system would propel Nintendo back to the top where they once where. Obviously, things went a little bit differently for Nintendo by the end of that console generation, however, simply getting to play Rogue Leader at launch, experiencing the Cube controlling melting into my hands with it's perfectly contoured design, and seeing what the "next generation" of consoles could do was truly amazing. Of course, I've enjoyed every single Nintendo console out there as well as my Sega, Sony, and Microsoft machines. The GameCube arrived at just the perfect time in my life where I could enjoy gaming and the hype surrounding it more than I could with any other system.

I've got two hype/system get stories to add that I think I've talked about before.

For N64, I got it for my birthday in March 1997. I remember my parents taking me to Toys R Us to pick out a game (Mario Kart) and when I asked my dad if this meant I was getting an N64, he quickly replied "Nope, we're just getting you a game." Like a fool, I believed him, though that made getting the system that much sweeter.

For GameCube, I knew I was getting it for Christmas 2001. I had played it at my friend's house (who got it at launch) and was super pumped for Melee, Pikmin, Monkey Ball, etc. I tried to explain to my parents the concept of a memory card, but I was pretty sure they didn't get it. I wound buying a memory card and wrapping it "to Neal, from Neal" so I could save my games on Christmas. Sure enough, they forgot and I considered myself to be a precognitive genius/selfish Christmas asshole.

On Christmas Day, though, I opened up all my gifts only to see I got games, controller, the memory card I bought, but no system. My dad had actually put together a treasure map for me and my two siblings for the "big" gift. I had to traipse around my basement following clues to find my system, which was nestled in a corner near my cat's litter boxes.

for me the console i was the most hyped for was the Wii by default since it was the only console generation turnover I've ever experienced from a hardcore gamer perspective. my n64 was my first console that my parents got me and I bought a gamecube with my own money when i was in grade 5 just because it was a nintendo console and i liked the 64. The Wii must have came out when i was in grade 10 i think.

Props man, you must have mowed alotta lawns to afford that console at the age of 11!

The N64 would be the hype-monster in my case. Those 3-D games were mindblowing at the time and who can forget Nintendo's Project Reality and Dream Team B.S. ...besides reading and re-reading the articles for Mario 64 I remember those slick screens of Robotech 64. Oh man, did I want an N64! If I recall correctly, there was the added bonus of the system being released cheaper than originally announced? (might be my old-man memory betraying me tho)

If we talking about most-hyped single games however, it might be a tie between Street Fighter 2 SNES and Ocarina of Time (takes off rose-coloured specs)

I must say I rather enjoyed the dinosaurs in pop culture section and would like to hear more of it sometime. Although I have been singing the Denver theme song and getting weird looks from my coworkers all night.

I'm sure Zach will jump at any excuse to talk about dinosaurs, even the fictional cartoon variety.

@Pureval: I'm trying to wedge a dinosaur-themed bonus segment into the show, but none of my fellow staffers are really jumping at the chance to co-host it with me. Did you guys here about the Romanian enantiornithine group nesting site? OMG!
