Radio Free Nintendo: Episode 174

The RFN gang is finally back together for the holidays, and we even brought a special friend: Cory Lewis, gaming's Renaissance Man.

It feels so good to have the podcast crew reunited that we had to do one better. Our special guest this week is Cory Lewis, formerly of IGN, Nintendo PR, and Pandemic Studios. He even recently did some work on Cave Story for WiiWare, a topic that comes late in the show. We start, however, with a big New Business covering more Mario, Spirit Tracks, both DJ and Band Hero, Excitebike: World Rally, Final Fight 3, F1 racing vs. NASCAR, Mass Effect, and PixelJunk Shooter.

The episode's latter half focuses on Cory's fascinating journey through the gaming industry. You'll learn how he got hired at IGN (twice), what it's like working public relations for Nintendo of America, and how game producers juggle management tasks with broad creative input on a huge project like The Saboteur. Cory is a true insider who also happens to be a huge Nintendo fan.

We're always looking for great Listener Mail to read and discuss on the show, so please send your questions or comments! (We really love seeing your praise and feedback regarding the show itself; however, in the interest of time, we may edit your letter to be read on the podcast.)      Credits:

I should note that Cory is also on the new episode of 4 Guys 1up, along with Billy Berghammer. Thanks to Billy for the NWR shout-out!

Excellent episode! I love when guests are on and to hear about what goes on "inside".

Man Jonny, why are all these podcast you say people are on and recommend all like 2 hours! I think a lot of people are taking your lead in length! I will probably listen anyways because of Billy.

Awesome episode, guys. I crossed paths with Cory a few times myself while he was at Golin Harris; it's cool to hear what all he's been up to since then.

I like this guest thing. Who's next?

Guests are ok, but I prefer our own crew talking about what they're playing and various news stories/features.  I find I usually don't give a damn about whatever the guest was brought on to talk about, as I didn't in the recent one with the guy who came in to promote a charity.  I haven't had a chance to listen to the second half of this episode, though.

I hear that, every now and then is alright.

Cory's a big deal.  He created GAMECUBE MASTA and I think the GameCube Wizard nearly a decade ago.  Greater legacies than what the IGN offices can offer today.

Yeah, Cory was cool. I like it when the show has guests, though I admit to liking Mailbag more. So often it leads to angry, bitter ranting or galls of laughter.

Usually anger, bitter ranting from James though...

Speaking of IGN, I went to their site last week and wow, they've done a pretty extensive redesign.  I'm not sure what I think about it yet.  I was trying to find an older review and it seemed like it was hard to find the list.  But on the other hand, there's less crap that loads up right away, and I think it's a much cleaner overall design.

I used to love IGN, but I haven't spent time there since... well, since right around the time Cory left I guess, because their site just got too cluttered.

Yeah. The new IGN design does look better, but still too much clutter IMO. It's hard to believe too they still don't have a mobile version, but their Reviews and Greg Miller apps are good.

I rather like the new redesign, as it's pretty easy to navigate.  Unfortunately, their flash is even more unreliable now than it was before, which makes accessing the drop-down menus even more annoying now since half the time they don't appear.

Wait, when did you guys get a fourth member on the podcast?

Seriously though, great podcast. I really liked hearing Cory's story. Hope he lands on his feet quickly!
