Radio Free Nintendo - Episode 20
« on: October 03, 2006, 09:11:39 PM »
Mailbag Editor Steven Rodriguez, Trivia God Michael Cole, and I'm-As-Tall-As-A-House Daniel Bloodworth join forces to create CAPTAIN PLANET gamecube.

Let's not fight about things inconsequential.

Three courageous staffers decide to join us, two returning favorites (Steven Rodriguez and Daniel Bloodworth) and one brave newcomer: Michael "TYP" Cole. Their various expertise is....varietous? It has variety. Anyways, one thing we all have in common is our West Coast heritage and residence. Power to Pacific Standard Time!

Episode 20: The Madden Curse is Real

AAC Format

MP3 Format

You can also listen to the podcast on Odeo.

powered by ODEO

In this Podcast Steven Rodriguez participates in some actual investigative journalism with regards to "THE MADDEN CURSE," something we have found to be very real and very frightening. (I myself, a potential candidate for Madden box-art sponsorship, am weary of my impending $500,000 deal with EA.) We also bring up Wii's play history feature, GameCube's Lost Gems, and wherefore the heathens ignore Xbox 360 and PS2.

I would like to take the time to remind you that the AAC version of the Podcast is enhanced - if you listen to it in iTunes you will get to view beautiful pictures corresponding with the Podcast's current topics. Also provided, at only a small extra charge, are links to coverage on PGC that may help clarify (or elucidate) our ramblings.

If you enjoy our cast, or even if you hate it, we want to hear your opinion! You can rate us on iTunes or send us an e-mail at our dedicated address:

Nice podcast guys. Glad they are getting a little longer. Whew, those commercials. They were amazing.

Before, if i bought a game i'd play it through nicely... if not completely beat it. But like you guys, I too have no finished a lot of my games. Last one i beat was killer7. Still got wonderful pikmin2 and beyond good and evil to go..  I've barely touched them. probably tons of other games too. I never use to do this. :-(

Keep up the great work guys.

I haven't finished a number of games either. Life gets busy as you get older.  Maybe Nintendo is on to something with these short and fun "non-games".

I like how this podcast is the exact opposite of what I reccommended in the other thread (shorter, less people). I enjoyed it anyway. I'm liking these roundtables more and more, and the length didn't really bother me with this one.

Stan's commercials were exactly like mine.
“...there are those who would...say, '...If I could just not have to work everyday...that would be the most wonderful life in the world.' They don't know life. Because what makes life mean something is purpose.  The battle. The struggle.  Even if you don't win it.” - Richard M. Nixon

OMG how the heck am i gonna get thru Twiglight Princess......I'll either have to drop out of school or slowly finish it over a years time.

(Edit) P.S. just to let you know there was a Pokemon TCG sequel that I believe includes 4 expansion packs.  I just heard u guys talkin about it and i looked it up.  I'm sure since this game is not a US game it may be perfectly okay to well u know.....

I have a policy of not buying a new game until I finish the old one. Unfortunately most games don't last long due to the fact I just rip most of them apart under what they are designed for even on hard.

Another excellent episode. High in tasty insanity factor.

I couldn't listen to this podcast in its entirety because my attention span is too sensitive, however from the prior comments I will also comment on unfinished games.

For the GC I've got 29 games, 7 unfinished and I have yet to get Baten Kaitos Origins, I finished the 1st Baten yesterday and I could have beaten it a long time ago but I was stuck on the last boss Malpercio.
6 DS unfinished games, and 5 GBA (only RPGs) unfinished games.

I'm confident I will finish them all one day, it's just a matter of time.

I agree that once you reach adulthood you have less time to play videogames, however I think that most games can be seen as finished when the main objective of the game is complete.

When we are younger we have more time to be perfect completists, when older we (I at least) are just satisfied with just finishing it, unless of course you really enjoyed the game and want to have a perfect completion of the game.

It's all about what you think is a finished game or not, for example I finished Pikmin 2 but I have yet to get all the treasures because i don't want to, I think the story mode by itself was enough of a completion.

First, what the heck is wrong with you people who don't finish games?  I think I've beat every game in my collection except for Pac-Man World 2 (which I only got for Pac-Man Vs.) and F-Zero because I couldn't beat one of the story missions no matter how hard I tried.  You guys need to stop being such wusses.

This Podcast seemed to drag a bit.  I hope I don't sound overly critical, but the Madden Curse section especially took too long and the delivery was lacking.

Also, I've said this before, but you guys need to start and end every sentence you say with your name.  I must have drifted off for a second and later I thought Bloodworth was talking about his Xbox 360 and how fantastic Dead Rising was until Evan shifted the conversation and asked Bloodworth why he was a single console owner.  When's there's more than two of you, it gets difficult to tell who's who sometimes.

EDIT:  People like me don't use iTunes, but we'd like to get the pictures and links and whatnot anyway.  Any chance you could just start posting/linking them in the thread and/or adding them to the Podcast page?

As for pictures and whatnot, I believe that's an AAC feature.

Hey, looky there.  A picture--and no AAC file in sight.

LOL at Stan's commercials. I've listened to it a couple times and I can't totally tell, but he does use the word testicle, correct?

Anyways, another enjoyable episode. I agree that the Madden Curse segment ran a little long, but that was minor. Evan's ending comment of "So the moral is you shouldn't play football or football games?" made it worth it.

Naruto Commercial Fun Story:

Evan basically approached Stan and me about making little shorts to promote the contest during this podcast. Stan made one, which is the first commercial you heard, but he also had this funny audio clip he made a few months ago (for what reason, I don't really want to know), and Evan and I thought it was so random, it had to be featured. I made a short myself, but it was deemed to controversial to air, likely due to my liberal use of Japanese slang and J-POP.

I thought it was classic, but oh well.

AAC = M4A, and it has to be played in iTunes. Let me just say that the pictures and links are not worth posting in the Podcast news page, mainly because they're character art or promotional Wii pictures that link to a Wii news story you've seen already. It's more of a handy thing than a cool thing. Sometimes Mike has put some funny pictures up there, and if we ever do that again I'll be sure to have them included in the main page.

I appreciate all the comments about length and format - I take every suggestion to heart. (Wandering, this includes your statements in previous Podcast talkback threads that I have not responded to.)

Also, do you guys want more comedy in the show? How about reviews of games? As it is, we mostly just talk about the news and editorialize about other topics. Suggestions are welcome.

Could you please index your podcasts?
If you don't get what I'm asking, here is an example:

0:00 Intro
2:24 madden curse
...
and so on.

Oh and please do not drag too much some of you conversations.
Reviews of games would be cool.
I don't know what to suggest for when your podcasts have more than 2 people talking, it does get confusing though because we can't see any faces lol, uhhh...I don't know how to explain this, for those that don't use iTunes it would be good to have a video file available for download, and in that video file whoever is speaking his "avatar"/picture would appear and so there would be no confusion for us.

I think an avatar might be going a little overboard.  It's usually fine when Evan is MC'ing because he's sure to always says the person's name when he's addressing them.  But sometimes when the conversation starts flowing and people just jump in without introducing themselves, it can be a tad confusing telling who's who.  (Also, I have a short attention span, so when people talk for more than thirty seconds at a time, I forget who's talking and what the question was.)

I don't think reviews are an idea subject matter.  There's too many different styles of games and if you starting reviewing one it could get fairly boring for the next ten minutes if you're not interested in the game.  I think news/current events are probably the best thing to stick with.  Also, I like Karl/Stan's topics on journalism, etc.  Editorials are good, too, I suppose.

Also, bring we need more Obi.

I like the old opening better.

I really liked Baten Kaitos.  It was the only Card RPG I liked.  Plus the items that boost you a lot but caused confusion and it was actually your skilled being tested yeah.

Go Four Swords.

I like FF:CC even Single player.  Ditto for Four Swords.  But FF:CC might be better if the would have expanded those little stories as you go along.

Bad.  Commercial.  Blame Evan.

Madden Curse?  Interesting...

Bad entries get a visit from a PGC staffer and a solution to all their problems.

Sleepy Finish Podcast later.

Yeah. I agree about the review thing. It seems reviews would take a while and possibly be uninteresting. But talking about certain games for a while is nice. Like the way Megaman Battle Network 6 was mentioned... from what i remember it was good listening.

Yeah and retitle the podcast to "PGC... Up Yours!" You know, make the joke more obvious for those that don't get it.

Anyways, I like that topic on 1Up and I imagine I would like it here as well. And actually, the question might be more interesting when Nintendo's NOT selling games.
