So I can't get "that" weapon with only 3 hearts? BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!

I don't understand why you would need that weapon if you're doing a strict 3 heart run.

Also, I can totally understand the gating mechanism used for getting it because without it you could have easily broken the game.

Well even thought I've played over 100hours, at best Ive seen half the map. So when I finally got there it seemed like I only started playing the  game even though I'm over 40 plus shrines or such. Also, I'm guessing I can't beat the game without it...or so I thought?

The weapon is not that strong, breaks outside of a few areas, and isn't really needed.  I like having it for tradition, but it can be skipped with no impact on game difficulty.  There is a memory associated with it.

Thanks.  I hadn't seen anyone else mention it.  With no sensor bar, I hoped they had figured out some other way around the drift issue.

During my playthrough of BotW, I noticed my gyrometer drifting a few times.  The motion controls shift the camera, so the screen or arrow reticle would just slowly drift when my hands were still.  Being a Wii veteran, I placed the controller on a flat surface and it corrected itself after a while.  Has anyone else had this issue?

Yeah, Wii remotes work fine.  They are just bulkier to hold.  I still prefer it to using my phone, which is an option in modern versions of the game.

Yes, it certainly is.

If you want, you can cash in your orbs for hearts, then sell them off to the dark statue at the side of the pond near the house you can buy.

NickMitch, I agree that a D-Pad doesn't make ideal buttons, but neither do buttons make an ideal D-Pad.  By choosing to sacrifice the D-Pad, the basic functionality of portable mode is nerfed.  Games that work with the little sideways pads tend to be simple enough that a D-Pad wouldn't be too bad.

I find fighting the Bokoblins on horses easiest on foot, since you have no need to steer the horse in its wide arc.  The bok boys tend to lead their shots, so they miss if you aren't moving.  Fire arrows with give you an updraft to slow-mo them.  As with most enemies in the game, I primarily struggle when I panic and try to just run at things to get a quick hit in.

Horses are a nice addition for atmosphere and making the world feel less empty, but I fall on the side of thinking they are more restrictive that they are worth.  It made more sense in the old games, where they essentially served as fast travel points, there was no emphasis on climbing, and Epona was integrated more into the story.  The big horse is funny.

Nintendo basically rejected the notion of PS4/XBone ports with the Switch design.  For me, it is not too bad if they let go of the pretense that it isn't a 3DS successor and all those developers (including internal) move to Switch.

Also, YES, the left Joy-con should have a D-pad.  I would much prefer using the D-pad as buttons in two player games than using the buttons as a D-pad for any game on the go.  Using the Joy-con on their sides is awkward anyway, plus there are shoulder-ish buttons, so there is no need to sacrifice the most fundamental Nintendo input style to make that play style work better.

Nice review!  As someone who has purchased many of these games, I can see why people would rate them highly or poorly.  It is all about perspective.  For those wanting full body tracking, you can get a used 360 with Kinect pretty cheap now, and they are still releasing the games for it.  That would also give you access to Dance Central games, which are very different... less about pure cardio fun and more like Guitar Hero with body positions.  I like both.

After doing P90X and Insanity, I didn't expect much of a workout.  After just a few minutes, though, I felt like I was going to pass out.  If you really try to dance (even awkwardly), it is one of the best ways to exercise and fun too.  My favorite method is to just put it on shuffle and let it run.  I gradually worked up to being able to dance for longer periods without feeling too gross.

It's true that there are plenty (tons around the northern limit) and blood moons reset them.  It is the same thing every time, though, so gathering materials becomes classic RPG grinding that is best kept to a minimum.  Lynels are more interesting to fight than most, but there just aren't many enemy types in this game, so the material gathering tends to come from the same few creatures.  There is not much reason to fight ones that you randomly encounter, unless you are running low on weapons or want to give it a try if you've never fought one.

There is no real need to upgrade gear four times, so it isn't much of a complaint.  I am doing it more to justify spending all that money than anything else.  Haha.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: A Compiled List of Carrying Cases for the Switch
« on: March 29, 2017, 01:23:23 PM »
Good to know that the Sheikah case has a non-styled clone.  It has been perfect and keeps the switch safe, with plenty of room for games and accessories without being too bulky to carry.  If I lose it or damage it, I would want a similar case.  I also went with a glass screen protector this time.  If, like me, you have hated the rainbow-creating plastic screen protectors of yore, I suggest you give tempered glass protectors a try.  The plastic Switch screen really demands it, unless you don't mind the inevitable collection of fine scratches.

Hopefully, going with standard parts will allow for fast (bi-yearly?) iterative upgrades that allow compatibility back a few generations.  For a first gen product, I am happy with the Switch.  1080p does make a big difference on a large TV, though.  I thought my projector was out of focus when I first went into the Switch menus.

I am getting close to 70 shrines now, and all the beasts done.  I didn't plan to upgrade my armor, because the main thing in the game that good armor is useful for is the thing I'd have to kill dozens of to get it, but I may get at least one level 4 upgrade if I can find the last fairy.  In the meantime, I am finding it funny how easy the Hinox are, even big brother black.  Like most RPGs, it is a good feeling to dominate enemies that you were scared to face early in.  The first time I wandered into a Hinox in a forest, I panicked!

Speaking of those, something happened with one on Evertide Island.  I was afraid to face the Hinox there and spent forever methodically weakening him.  Finally, he died and I ran over to grab the orb.  When I was near his spawn point, the blood moon kicked in and he was back... it was too funny to be mad.

Edit: Just wanted to say that I was grossly overestimating the number of Lynels I have to kill to get armor upgrades to the max.  I found the last fairy, plus found out that I can just save before a battle and repeat it if I don't get the drops I need.  I still suck at fighting them and eat a lot.  It seems like my dodges are usually a little out of sync.  I am also slow with aiming arrows, so getting airborne is my cheap strategy for doing that.

It has been the main game I show people, but primarily because it is one of the only multiplayer games at launch.  It also works as a game for everyone, and has been fun to play with people who don't normally play videogames.  With that said, there isn't much to it.  It isn't a game people want to buy a Switch for, like Wii Sports sold Wiis.  Nobody that wasn't a gamer even considered it, and had enough after a short play session.  I don't think we have yet seen the game that Nintendo plans to target the Blue Ocean with... maybe something involving the camera.  They went to the expense of putting it there, so they must have had something better than eating contests in mind.

As someone who is not great at (or overly patient with) old school platformers, I think Shovel Knight had the perfect difficulty.  The Plague Knight expansion was similar, other than a learning curve with the new controls.  There is plenty of money to get all the helpful items and upgrades, and using them liberally prevents much frustration.  Unlike most Indie games, they clearly spent a lot of time balancing things for the average player.

Yes, the rain has hit me a couple times too.  The second time, I was in such a bad position that I just put the controller down and waited for it to stop.  It started again, and I waited it out again.  I could really use an ocarina with some weather songs.

The towers are usually fun to "solve," and my only suggestion for future games is that the area around Link automatically fills in as he moves through an area, similar to other games.  Having a record of where I've been would be great in general.

It finally happened. I got burnt out on exploration.  It tends to be the same thing over and over after a while, with the main entertainment being messing around with physics.  So, I decided to take a break and head to the top left Beast area for some narrative progression.  It was there that I found the cutest thing I've ever seen in a videogame -- Rito kids.

I agree that the game isn't perfect, Ian, but there is one bit of game logic that makes you essentially invincible in this game.  When you have full health, almost nothing will kill you in one hit.  Instead, it will knock you down to half a heart, giving you time to eat something to bring you back to full health.  Have a lot of food on hand and you just need to watch out for things like elemental attacks.  I have a lot more hearts now and most bigger enemies still knock me down to half a heart, so it was actually easier with 3.  I guess I need to hunt some things to upgrade my favorite costume.

Speaking of that, I am so glad that costumes don't take damage or wear out.  I think I'd be okay with the weapons, shields, and bows wearing out if there was an indestructible main quest item for each, similar to the rental system in Link Between Worlds.

Khushrenada, you can glide to the entrance, which you can see from the tower.  That's how I got in.

It looks like they put a 6 month hold on most ports, trying to avoid a wave of them that would bury exclusive new games and make the system look also-ran.  Probably a bad idea, considering how little there is to play right now, but it makes sense.

I only found him in the wild once, but I missed him the first time because I was doing my typical climbing and swooping in approach to travel.  I had already been to his final destination, and he just told me that he'd be there when I wanted to meet him again for inventory stuff.  The forest with the Koroks is due West of Goron city if you are climbing over the mountain.  There is a tower there that you can glide to, from which you can see a wooded area shrouded in mist. Not sure if he'll be there after one meeting for everyone or if I tripped some out-of-sequence contingency.

95
You are a Korok seed master!  It seems useful to go for them early, to make more use of the expanded inventory.

I plan for this game to be the swan song on my 3DS.  The last expansion was surprisingly good.  I may get it on Switch at some point for multiplayer.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Switch Console Battery Issues?
« on: March 16, 2017, 02:03:43 PM »
Charging is actually surprisingly good for me, even from a standard (not high Amperage) supply.  Battery life is significantly longer than you are getting, but not fantastic.  Basically, like 3DS.  If the full power cycle doesn't work, maybe contact Nintendo and see if they can do a repair without losing your save data.

The cooling solution for it seems custom and impressive, though.  Still, from the moment I held it and used it, it was clear that it was overpriced.  I will be more conservative with buying future revisions at launch, but in this case I no longer have access to a Wii U and wanted Zelda ASAP.  It is hard not to love a portable BotW machine, and the bar has been set very low for handhelds in the past.  I am curious to see how other companies will respond.  Microsoft in particular could probably make a killer competitor.

Thanks.  It seems that this game is better with some guidance, which is an odd thing to say when Zelda games usually offer too much.  Strangely, having less health seems to make it easier to survive.  Since there are few things that kill you in one hit at full health, you can use low level healing items to max out after any damage.  The only thing so far that has killed me in one hit is electricity.  I have also found that stamina upgrades are not that useful, but being able to run for longer is nice.  For climbing, there is always (so far) a way to approach it that doesn't require any extra.  Extra stamina is basically just a fast forward button.

I actually like that the game can be played with no upgrades, although it removes the challenge that masochists like with 3-heart runs.  I guess we have hard mode coming for that.

Ah, I forgot about that.  In most Zelda games, it is straightforward to do things like 3-heart runs.  I guess the difference is that those items were not crucial story elements in the original Zelda.  This is one spoiler that I would have liked, because I would have gone with only heart container upgrades.  If I was one of the people that went with pure stamina upgrades, I'd be steamed.

In terms of the reboot, I had the original Famicom Zelda box out and it was funny how much the landscape resembled Breath of the Wild.  The only thing missing is the derpy Link, which I actually like.  It has that odd art style that I associate with 70s animation like The Hobbit.
