I imagine the version we got in English speaking Europe was also the Treehouse version. If so, I'd just like to recommend that they be given free reign in the future too. Uprising was without a doubt Nintendo's best attempt yet at a fully voice acted game (Star Fox 64 has it's own likeable cheesiness, but only in retrospect). I don't dislike Other M as much as others, but even I can acknowledge that it is completely blown away by Uprising in the story, script and VO departments.

TalkBack / Re: The Last Story Impressions
« on: May 09, 2012, 03:37:56 PM »
Interesting.

I really enjoyed The Last Story, but I felt like it only really demonstrated the depth and complexity of the battle system towards the end of the game. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it was only with the final boss that the game's various mechanics really come together. Throughout the majority of the game I didn't find myself having to use many advanced tactics. I often would use these more complex systems just because they were fun, like bouncing off walls and landing on spell spots to cause status effects and buffs, but it was never really necessary. I'd love to see a sequel which would start where The Last Story left off, because the battle system was pretty cool.

TalkBack / Re: Xenoblade's Graphics: Why HD Does Not Matter
« on: May 07, 2012, 04:51:24 PM »
Agreed. I'd take great art design and fast load times over high definition graphics any day. Having said that, I'll gladly take a great art style, fast load time, AND high definition graphics. Xenoblade sequel for Wii U, anyone?

I've got a hard question for Nintendo.
Given that the New Super Mario Bros series sells so well, why is the meaning of life 42?

TalkBack / Re: Hard Questions for Nintendo
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:51:06 AM »
Well, we all have our problems with the way Nintendo do things, but for me these (hypothetical) questions were too pointed and sounded just a little too petulant. If you were ever to really sit in front of one of these guys you would probably need more tact and be more savvy. There's nothing wrong with asking assertive questions but if an interviewer were actually interested in getting informative answers they might want to be smarter about how they word their questions.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 290: BOMZALDROPPEN
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:29:54 AM »
My comment on last week's podcast talkback seems kind of eerie in retrospect. I said,
"Yay for more Guillaume. Boo for no Greg."
I stand by it though. It sucks that Greg will no longer be a part of the show, but I'm also kind of glad that it's Guillaume who is to take up Greg's mantle (burden?). I thought he was a great addition to those episodes he participated in, including at PAX, and he seems to fit in really well with the other members of the RFN crew. Often when guests are brought on to podcasts those episodes end up being my least favourite, as they are usually vaguely uncomfortable or awkward. Right from the offset though Guillaume seemed to get what was so great about NWR (perhaps because NegativeWorld is doing something similar).
I'm sad that this particular era has come to an end, but equally I'm excited to see where the show goes from here. Also, I really hope this isn't the last time we've heard from Greg. Hopefully he'll be willing to come back every once in a while much as he does for Radio Trivia.

It's kind of weird. It's not like I know Greg personally or anything, but this has really bummed me out. I know that some of you guys on the RFN crew listen to podcasts yourselves, so you might appreciate that the audience for this podcast really do value what you guys do; and of course Greg's contribution to the show was immense.

It's Hoban Wash all over again!

Cool. I'm always happy to hear more discussion of Xenoblade. That game was so enjoyable. Just thinking about it makes me want to go play it again. I mean, I won't. You know, because it's like 100 hours long, but still.

This could be really awesome. I haven't played Monster Tale but have played Hatsworth. The latter of which I thought was a great game, but one which became too frustrating for me personally. I just hope this game doesn't become as brutal as Hatsworth did towards the end.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RFN RetroActive Game Nominations
« on: May 06, 2012, 05:41:55 PM »
There's two fantastic NES games, that I only played for the first time on Wii VC, which I would be interested to hear discussed in more detail by the RFN crew. Those games are 'Ufouria: The Saga' and 'Faxanadu'. I believe both have been discussed on the podcast before, so I'm not sure if that makes them less eligible for Retroactive nomination given it's stated purpose of focusing on games which have not recieved much attention or which might not otherwise be discussed. Still, I'd really like to hear an extended discussion on both games as they are really quite interesting in their own ways and each would now rank among my favourite NES games.
In case you haven't played these games, I really would recommend downloading them on VC. Weirdly, I would argue that both games are inspired by Nintendo titles, but both in my opinion also surpass the games they're inspired by. Ufouria for instances is very much patterned off Metroid, but it's much tighter and more focused, and in my opinion more fun than the original Metroid. Faxanadu on the other hand is in some respects quite similar to Zelda II, but again I found it much easier to get in to.

TalkBack / Re: 3D Classics Kid Icarus Review
« on: May 05, 2012, 08:27:32 PM »
Great review. I had quite a similar experience with this 3D classics version of Icarus. I never got past the third level on the NES version, but the subtle gameplay improvements and additional graphical flourishes for this new release just made it far more playable for me. I've enjoyed it much more than I thought was possible.

Despite being a huge Metroid fan I've always found it difficult to get into the original NES Metroid. I'd really like to see them give that game a similar treatment. I imagine the addition of new backgrounds would go some way towards making the various areas in Metroid more distinctive.

TalkBack / Re: NWR Game Club #2: Metroid: Other M
« on: April 30, 2012, 03:48:01 PM »
As with many Nintendo games this generation, Other M was a very enjoyable game with some heavy caveats. The decision by Sakamoto to force a control scheme onto a sole Wii remote without giving an alternate control scheme was absolutely bonkers. I can understand having this more basic input for beginners or for people who simply perfer it. However, This control scheme has two significant downsides for me. Firstly it forced you to control a character in 3D space with the D pad, which does not allow for increments of movement. Secondly, because the game has a first person mode which utilises the pointer, it forces the player to change their grip on the controller any time they want to fire missiles or search areas. Had a control option been available which utilised the nunchuck then not only would this allowed for more refined movement with the analogue stick, it would also have meant that the remote could be held in the pointer position rather than sideways like an NES controller.

It's kind of weird, but one of the reasons I always appreciated Nintendo as a developer was because their control schemes were always so honed and refined. Between Metroid: Other M, Donkey Kong Country Returns (shake to roll? What the hell is wrong with the classic controller?) and Kid Icarus: Uprising, Nintendo has made some serious mistakes in recent years.

Admittedly, during this time they've also given us the Galaxy games, Sin & Punishment 2 and Wii Sports: Resort, all of which had great controls. It's just a shame that they appear to have gone bonkers on a few occasions. It's also worth pointing out that of those games given as examples of not so good control schemes, my issue is not so much that these inputs are inherently 'bad' (although I would certainly say Uprising's are bad), but rather that there were better options which were not offered as alternative controls, be they the Classic Controller, Nunchuck, or Circle Pad Pro.

Hopefully we at least get some Virtual Console games for Wii in it's dying months. In Europe I would very much like to see Mega Man X 2, Monster World IV, and Castlevania: Bloodlines. I think we have a reasonable shot of getting the first two. Not so sure about Bloodlines though.

I really didn't find the physics in Motoheroz all that fun. I became better at controlling the vehicle but never really had the sort of control I felt like I needed. The physics issues for me were just exacerbated when either other vehicles or water were involved. Bumping into AI characters was just frustrating for me and I absolutely hated the underwater challenges which controlled terribly.

Yay for more Guillaume. Boo for no Greg.

TalkBack / Re: New Play Control! Pikmin 2 Finally Coming Stateside
« on: April 29, 2012, 04:16:58 AM »
That's cool for those who perhaps enjoyed the first Pikmin but have never played the second.

Personally, I actually prefer the first game. I felt like Pikmin had a certain tension that Pikmin 2 lacks. I also really dislike the randomised underground sections in the second game. I much prefer the above ground sections which are far more pretty and interesting.

Great episode guys, really enjoyed it.
With regards the Fire Emblem series, I found it hard to wrap my head around at first. I could never get into the Wii game for instance. I've really enjoyed Sacred Stones though, so I'm eager to see how the 3DS game turns out.

I threw something together on Colours! 3D, but I have to say it looked far better in 3D. If you want to see it in 3D search for 'Hug Louie' in the Colours! 3D Gallery.

TalkBack / Re: NWR Staff 3DS Playtime Round Two
« on: April 03, 2012, 05:11:28 PM »
My most played games have been,

1 - Mario Kart - 35:55 hrs
2 - Ocarina of Time - 34:15 hrs
3 - Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition - 30:26 hrs
4 - Chrono Trigger (DS) - 29:03 hrs
5 - Professor Layton and the Lost Future (DS) - 28:57 hrs
6 - Pullblox - 27:38 hrs
7 - Professor Layton and Pandora's Box (DS) - 26:24 hrs
8 - Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (DS) - 23:16 hrs
9 - Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS) - 22:21 hrs
10 - Super Mario 3D Land - 21:49 hrs

I guess it goes without saying that during the long in months in which no 3DS games were coming out I made the best of it by acquainting myself with the Layton series.

Other notable mentions are Uprising at 12th (21:37 hrs), Ghost Trick at 15th (16:35 hrs) and my least played game being Kirby & the Amazing mirror at 76th (0:06 hrs).
