New Netflix Anime

Blue Eyed Samurai
- just bonged this over the weekend, and really thought it was well done.
Animation was really good, and the story and characters I felt were also really well written.

there's a small twist that's revealed early on, but I honestly expected it almost immediately, but that only adds to what is happening, not takes away from it.

[minor spoiler related to minor twist]
There is however a really heavy feminist slant, as this is written by woman and contains lots of strong female characters, but I think overall it's really well done and not overly thrown in your face till the end.

The premise is about a blue eyed half breed Japanese kid who is bullied as a "monster" into becoming a samurai who is hell bent on getting revenge not necessarily on those that bullied, but on those that made the main the character a monster.

and to top it off, all the action in this is great. not a bad episode in the bunch.
definitely recommended for all the older anime and action fans, especially those looking for an animation style more reminiscent of Arcane.

they are slowly ticking down over the last week... but not enough to make a difference for most.

I know in Canada they also do not have 30yr fix mortgages....must be rough.
Here in the US though, we're not really expecting anything major in rate reductions till sometime mid to late next year, which sucks, and is also an estimate I really hope proves to be wrong, as I really hope reductions in rates start happening much much sooner than that.

28
Not a TV Show or a Movie.... it's actually a Walmart Black Friday Ad
but.......

why would I not mind seeing this as a direct to streaming movie if they could flesh it out and bring back Regina.

Netflix to open new Physical Locations...!?
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-10-12/netflix-to-open-stores-where-fans-can-play-shop-and-eat-in-2025?leadSource=uverify%20wall

To be more like a Themed Bar and Grill with a Souvenir Shop and an "Escape Room"/Experience attached.

actually not a bad idea.

Quote
Netflix Inc. plans to open new destinations where fans can immerse themselves in the worlds of their favorite TV shows, shop for clothing, eat themed food and maybe even try a Squid Game obstacle course.

Dubbed Netflix House, the venues will feature a mix of retail, dining and live experiences, according to Josh Simon, the company's vice president of consumer products. The streaming TV pioneer plans to open the first two in the US in 2025 and then expand the concept around the world.

I didn't do the Stranger Things Experience when it came to SF, but I could see that being a cool reason to keep vising the place, especially if the food and drinks are beyond decent.

Not only can they advertise the latest and greatest things they have to offer on the streaming platform, but they could have a small arcade area to boost the awareness that they also have games on the mobile platform. They can sell all the merchandise from their "Netflix Originals" and other popular programs.

Then plan on having a rotating "Experience", such as a Squid Game challenge, or Stranger Things Experience, (a few made up ones) Wednesdays Halloween Haunt, Locke and Key Interactive Escape Room, One Piece Playhouse (take picks with life size characters in set locations), World of The Witcher, Warrior Nun Training Grounds.... or countless other "experiences" based on Netflix properties.
edit: The House of Ushers New Years Eve Masquerade Ball (one I would very much look forward to. lol)

They could even have Movie/Show premier Dinner Parties, where they serve special themed items, and debut a certain show/movie hours ahead of the debut on the streaming platform.
Meet and Greets, Cos-Play events, and even Character/Actor signings.

Quote
For years, media companies have used theme-park rides, costumes, toys and other consumer products to promote their characters and generate additional cash. This business is new to Netflix, whose marketing efforts have sometimes been criticized as inadequate by film and TV producers. Management views Netflix House more as a way to promote its titles than as a meaningful source of revenue, at least for now.

"We've seen how much fans love to immerse themselves in the world of our movies and TV shows, and we've been thinking a lot about how we take that to the next level," Simon said in an interview.

Netflix House will have rotating installations, including ticketed shows inspired by popular series and restaurants featuring food from unscripted shows. The food and drinks will range from fast casual – think burgers and fries – to more high-end dining, desserts and spirits.

Not a bad idea at all if they can pull it off.

This is for all the fans of The Haunting of Hill House....

you probably knew that was created, written and directed by Mike Flanagan. Someone I wasn't familiar with till recently even though I'd seen some of his previous works, such as Oculus, Doctor Sleep, Hush, and Ouija: Origins of Evil.

Well, I watched Haunting of Hill House on Netflix back when it came out and it was Excellent. The twist, the scares, the story, I just enjoyed all of it.

He followed that up with The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Club, the first of which I haven't really watched, and the latter was more YA aimed, so my daughter watched an like it, as she was also a fan of Hill House.

Well, The Fall of the House of Usher released about a week or so ago, and I decided to check that out. This too was a really good story where I really enjoyed almost all of what I watched, and would definitely recommend it to anyone that's fans of the genre of Horror and/or Mike Flanagan.

Since i enjoyed the above so much, I went back and tried to watch Midnight Mass, as I had tried to start it before, but it was quite dull start, and I had no idea what it was about or who it was by the first time I tried to watch it.
I just finished it about 20 minutes ago, and even though this gets a slow start, it's part of a worthy buildup to a story worth watching (imo).
I don't want to give anything away on this, as I think that was part of the shock value, figuring out what's going on and what the title has to do with it.

BUt i just wanted to come in here and add this to the list of Horror Content on Netflix that is certainly worth a watch and all by the same guy.

Haunting of Hill House
Midnight Mass
The Fall of the House of Usher

in that order, but they are all a great, and your order may be different.
I might now circle back on Bly Manor now that I finished the other ones, but I went into Bly expecting more of Hill House, and it wasn't the same.

Anyone else checked out these shows on Netflix?

Trouble in the land of the MCU TV..... as if the quality of the shows didn't speak for themselves.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/daredevil-marvel-disney-1235614518/

Daredevil got hit with the RESET as they scrap the current show, fire the writers and directors and apparently are starting over. And lots of stories of how troubled the Marvel TV productions was as they were being run by movie people like long movies instead of TV shows by TV people. Feige is looking to remedy that going forward starting with Daredevil.

32
New rumors floating around.
Posting from phone. So keeping it brief....

- Developer codename NG
- 2 SKU's - digital only is the cheaper SKU
- large onboard storage compared to existing offerings
- Target price point of $400 for cheaper model
- Target release date of 9/24/2024 or 11/03/2024

As usual, take with grain of salt. Shared for conversations purposes.

Edit: update with more rumors from a different source.....
https://famiboards.com/threads/future-nintendo-hardware-technology-speculation-discussion-st-read-the-staff-posts-before-commenting.55/post-855132

Major devs like Activision and EA have had kits for months.
Nintendo including some AR abilities in the system and there's "evidence" of parts being shipped and kits being shipped to back both these claims.

And apparently mass production in some capacity has already begun.

And they think first half of 2024 releae, and that previous "rumor" at top of post is likely fake

33
I always meant to watch Warehouse 13, as it was in some way related to Eureka which was another show I enjoyed and completely forgot about till W13 was mentioned.

I also never got far into West Wing , another show I meant to binge watch that I heard was excellent.

34
Oooh, The Good Place.

Good call. I knew I was forgetting a REALLY good show.
I had to edit and move that into a Top 5 contender.

35
we do have a tendency to Mega-Thread everything around here....

but since I'm replying here's my personal Top 5:
The Shield
The Sopranos
Breaking Bad
The Wire
.... I have to put more thought into the actual 5th show here, but honorable mentions to

Better Call Saul
Avatar: TLA
The Boys
Arrested Development
The Good Place (had to edit that in, I knew i was forgetting something)

and other shows that likely fall outside of that Top 10 but I still enjoyed:

Battlestar Galactica
Lost
Game of Thrones

Hollywood Reporter drops Top 50 Tv Shows of since the year 2000 (21st Centrury)
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/best-tv-shows-21st-century/sex-and-the-city-hbo-1998-2004/

Top 10:
10. BoJack Horseman
9. Freaks and Geeks
8. Girls
7. Better Call Saul
6. Reservation Dogs
5. The Wire
4. 30 Rock
3. Succession
2. The Sopranos
1. Mad Men

I have The Shield in my Top Spot, but didn't even make the Top 30 of their list.
but this is all based on opinions, and I haven't even seen a lot of the shows on the list.

Such as 13 of the bottom 20 shows I haven't watched any of at all.
and overall 32 of the entire 50 I haven't seen.... some of these I've never even heard of.
Some I've seen a few episodes, or at best a majority of a single season worth of episodes.

Anyway, how would you rate this list? what's missing from your Top 5/10/25/50?

37
I see that FTC leaked revealed more than MS trying to buy Nintendo.
But we've been talking on this same topic in the rumor thread as well:
https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=16688.msg986845#msg986845

anyway, the rumors are that the hardware may be close to PS4 Pro/XBOS level, but due to the modern Nvidia tech inside, the visuals are gonna be closer to PS5/XBSX visuals.

The biggest explanation for this is Nvidia's DLSS(?) tech that uses AI to upscale and not just raw processing power (simplest way for me to explain as I'm not a tech head).

But as usual, we will have to wait and see what the end result is.

38
Has anyone seen this? the original link has obviously been killed, but apparently there was a FTC leak today regarding some Microsoft business dealings surrounding gaming acquisitions....

I think it started with the Activision/Blizzard buyout, and now here we are

I have not read up everything on this, and just ran across it minutes ago, but I'll just see what you all think about this.

edit: this was the original source BTW

Here's a rundown of all the latest rumors from the behind the scenes demo

Quote
-All of what they discussed is the rumor/chat that dominated Gamescom. The impressions of the demo are from second hand sources so they could be well off on how did The Matrix demo actually compared to PS5 and Xbox Series as 2 years passed between the 2 demos, or the “target hardware” may be not representative of what Nintendo/Nvidia actually manage to achieve in their final hardware (PS3 was only half as powerful as the “target hardware” that run many demo at E3).

-What Eurogamer and VGC reported is what everyone at Gamescom was hearing behind the scene.

-The reports seems to confirm the T239 Nvidia SoC being the actual Switch 2 intended hardware as the Nvidia leak indicated.

-BotW demo was running at 4K/60fps using DLSS.

-The Matrix demo has the benefit of Nvidia having much better ray tracing hardware than AMD.

-DLSS 3.5 (minus frame generation) is what they probably were using to run the demo and they think it’s reasonable to expect T239 to be able to handle DLSS 3.5 features (minus frame generation).

-Unreal Engine was 5 developed quite a lot in the past 2 years after the PS5/XBS demo released and it’s more scalable now that it was when the demo first debuted. The engine is getting “lighter”.

-It’s in Nvidia and Epic Games’ best interests to have Unreal Engine 5 be scalable down for Switch 2. Epic Games wouldn’t want to make Unreal Engine 5 hard to use on a platform potentially as successful as the original Switch was and Nvidia would desire this console to be a showcase of their impressive DLSS/ray tracing capabilities.
https://mynintendonews.com/2023/09/11/digital-foundry-discusses-vgc-eurogamer-switch-2-gamescom-rumors/

So far sounds great.

Also heard something about 12GB of RAM.
that also sounds great.

I hope Nintendo is able to make this thing as capable as it sounds.
Release at $399 and let's go!!!

edit: I haven't watched this, but this is the DF video discussing some Switch 2 stuff that's being referenced above.

I couldn't find the Switch 2 thread, and didn't feel like creating a new one, so I'll just bump this instead.

https://www.eurogamer.net/nintendo-demoed-switch-2-to-developers-at-gamescom

Apparently Switch 2 was demo'd using BotW remastered as a showcase.
Dev Kits are out and we can expect this to happen sometime next year.
I found this topic: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=65290.0

We'll just use this one for now, as it's all still rumors, not facts, and this thread has the most recent update.

But I forgot to share this part....
https://twitter.com/digitalfoundry/status/1699745957972160739?s=20

Quote
Another VGC source claimed that Nintendo showcased Epic's impressive The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo – originally released to showcase the power of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021 – running on target specs for its next console.
[...]
The demo is said to have been running using Nvidia's DLSS upscaling technology, with advanced ray tracing enabled and visuals comparable to Sony's and Microsoft's current-gen consoles (however, it should be noted this does not mean the Switch successor will sport raw power anywhere near that of PS5 or Xbox Series X, which aren't portable devices).
[...]
DLSS (deep learning super sampling) is a feature exclusive to Nvidia graphics cards. On PC, it works by using AI to upscale the resolution of games, effectively allowing developers to achieve higher graphical settings and better frame rates on weaker hardware. According to Digital Foundry analysis, DLSS at any normal screen distance "looks almost as good as the real thing."

and this is the demo from 2 years ago for the PS55 and XBX
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WU0gvPcc3jQ

All I gotta say is that regardless of if they actually hit that mark, the future looks bright if we getting UE5 support out the gate.

In this year's edition of "I bet you didn't see that coming" [/quicksilver reference]

Chris Paul to the Warriors for Jordan Poole and 2 future picks to the Wizards.....

I admit i was shocked at first and was thinking WTF are they thinking....
But CP3 is a vet and would be taking on the 2nd unit, and running point so Steph can play off ball more.
vs JP3 who is very erratic, over dribbled out of plays and into bad spots. Makes terrible telegraphed passes, and takes terrible shots at bad times, that are only acceptable IF YOU MAKE THEM (or are Steph Curry).

Besides, I'm sure Draymond opted out to put pressure to trade Poole. And then hopefully come back on s team friendly deal to sure up the bench for another run at a title. And it gets us out from his terrible contact.

I think it could work out.

The Blackening

This was a fun little horror/comedy.
It's about an all black main cast taking a quick Juneteenth weekend trip to a cabin in the woods.
therefore I guess it now falls under black comedy... (haha get it.... ::crickets::)

anyway, a little social commentary, and black tropes in horror movies all of course get visited in this one. I mean, the tag line is "We can't all die first".

Long story short, this was entertaining, funny, and had a few "tense" horror moments.
a certain aspect of it I thought was pretty obvious early on, but that didn't stop the enjoyment of this.
It's based on a skit from a comedy show, but they did a good job of fleshing it out to a full fledged movie that didn't overstay it's welcome by stretching the skit too thin.

If you like horror/comedy, it's worth the watch. A lively crowd in the theater is also a bonus, as people reacting to a horror/comedy in real time always adds to the enjoyment.

48
I think in the comics he just takes a super serum much like Captain America. But whatever. You got radioactive spiders and jacked lions. How he gets his powers isn't that important. Maybe it'll be Deadpool good?

It's possible that it gets by in a Venom kind of fun way, and maybe the lion was special, and that's why it was being hunted...

I can only guess the spider scene leads to aspirations to "Hunt a giant Spider....man" at some point.

Either way, Sony's Not Spider-man Cinematic Universe movies are automatically on the "wait till streaming" list, unless reviews are absolutely incredible.... much like DCEU movies going forward.

The Flash BOMBED, regardless of all the advertised manufactured "Hype", as I know most people are probably just waiting for it to hit streaming in the next month or 2.
We all know DCEU is being rebooted, so all these sequels are all "DOA".

I figure these Sony movies aren't ever gonna really cross over to Venom, or to the MCU, so they are just stand-alone pieces that were only propped up on some imaginary connective thread that never actually materializes.

49
The Venomverse expands with latest entry of Kraven: The Hunter

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rze8QYwWGMs

Now I will say that this looks interesting, but can't imagine it being good....
I don't know much about Kraven, but I'd like to know how the lion blood makes him superhuman all of a sudden.

Between Venom (which what fun), Venom 2 (which was not), Morbius (haven't watched, but reviewed terribly), and now this.... Sony doesn't exactly have the best track record with live action Not Spider Verse movies.
I look forward to the initial reviews on this. definitely a streaming watch at best tho.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse..... 11/10

**POTENTIAL MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD**

This move was crazy good, and I would've sat through a 4 hour version if they had released the whole thing at once. TBH, I wasn't even aware it was a 2 parter.... and about 2 hours in, I leaned over to my daughter and said "There is so much story left to tell... I wouldn't be mad if they hit pause right here, and said 'To Be Continued'..."
about 5 minutes later, that's exactly what happened. They certainly leave you wanting more.

The script gets flipped in this a few times, and the action is intense. The art-style lends alot to what they are able to create here visually, and it's awesome all the way through. This could not be achieved in live action in anyway whatsoever.

There are tons of easter eggs, and a *SPOILER*surprise cameo that's MCU related

I'm not even gonna get into details, but know that Spider-Gwen has plenty of screen-time, there's more easter-eggs in the amount of spider-beings and related villains that you will not be able to name them all in a single viewing, the action is amazing, the visuals are insane, and if you have time to rewatch the first movie (which I need to do, but isn't required).... the story is very much directly connected.

p.s. there are no post credits, and part 2 comes out March of next year (Beyond the Spider-verse)

long story short.
This is better than Into the Spider-Verse.
This is the best Spider-Man movie made to date
This is the best Marvel movie made to date
and you should go see this movie now.
