Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 263: All My Rowdy Friends

Demon's Souls > Dark Souls

Greg, Demon's Souls has no story - the only RPG element is upgrading your character. Demon's Souls, unlike, Dark Souls, has a hub world and the levels are structured (1-1,1-2,1-3, 2-1, 2-1, etc). The game is very liner, unlike Dark Souls, and doesn't bother with any romantics. I would love to hear what you think, Greg! The game is pretty cheap now. Please pick it up. It did take me 5 months to beat it,  it's a game you take your time with, but it's never boring and you're always in control of your character. By the way, I hate long games, so if I can do it, you can, too!

Dr. Metts, I loved the Ico/SotC collection, but I was disappointed they didn't improve the controls! The games are pretty easy, but every death was because of the controls, not my skill as a gamer. Also, if you like Ico, get Lost in Shadow! It's like Ico, but a sidescroller. The game, for me, is a masterpiece! It has tons of problems, but any Ico fan would love Lost in Shadow - in some cases, the game rips-off Ico.

James, I don't know if this has been mention before, but it Xenoblade blurry? Every video I've seen the game looks like a blurry mess. :/

I'm assuming Greg has never played Demon's Souls? Strange, doesn't he like difficult games? Anyway, the first boss can be killed in 20 seconds, all you have to use is fire - that's it.

I'm playing Dark Souls and  it may be the greatest game ever made - yup, that's how much I love the game. Greg, give it a shot if you haven't played it. I would love to hear your thoughts! The game is very similar to Zelda.

On the topic of Skyward Sword: No one has said a word about the music! The music in the "romance" trailer is simply beautiful! And I can't wait to get the soundtrack.

Dr. Metts, is there any chance for a Majora's Mask retro-active? I'm dying for one! It would make my day! I know I'm not alone in this!  :D

I know at least 2 hours I can skip.  A re-listen couldn't go with the epic chat.

The chat was that good? I'm Jealous. I completely forgot about the podcast.

Anyway, I'm enjoying this! Good job!

DAMN!!!! I forgot about this!!!!!!!  :@ I would have been there!!! I'm so pissed off at myself.

The last game I played on the Wii was Lost in Shadow, that was about 6 months ago. I'm sorry, but **** the Wii U, and **** Nintendo! Hell, RFN can't go an episode without mentioning a non-Nintendo related game! Nintendo can't be that dense!

By the way, the new Zelda game looks like ****.

I was deciding to get a 3DS or 360 next month. I now know my choice! 360 all the way! Why? Well, it's pretty simple - the 360 has games!

Pikmin was created by Miyamoto, I would think it would be out by now. I think he's working on too many projects at once.

@ NinSage

I love reading your responses.

@ Jonny

You're so right about Metroid! I tried so hard to get into it and I simply can't; the game is not for me, but it's strange how it's always considered one of Nintendo's top 3 franchises. I guess it's like the Mother games -- the few people who play them are really, really loud about how great the games are.

Different strokes for different folks.

1. The "business" aspect of journalism is a problem all over because it makes the outlet's primary goal to generate hits/viewers instead of to INFORM THE AUDIENCE.  But you're right, that's the reality we live in.

However, there are millliiiiooons of Wii owners and DS owners.  If they had good business sense they would be trying to bring those people in.  Try not to think like a moron in black and white terms.  Those millions of people are not just soccer moms who don't know what a computer is.  Even if 3/4 of those Wii owners only use the console as their "third" platform? Guess what? They probably would like to know if a good game was released!!

But did Kotaku cover MH3? No. They just posted a creepy video of a foreign kid spazzing about the game.

Did Kotaku cover NMH 1+2? Yes, but they covered the (then) Japanese only PS3 port of the years old first game literally 6x more!

The fact that you cite Kotaku as a main source of your ire (and insult me by calling me a "moron thinking in terms of black and white". Thanks for that, by the way) does more damage to your argument than I could hope to achieve.

A site like IGN, Destructoid, or whatnot's job is to inform their audience while generating ad revenue from things their audience has interest in.  If their audience had interest in Wii software, it wouldn't make business sense to ignore it.  Even if every writer at these sites hated the Wii with every fiber of their being, someone would still be covering these games if their audience had the interest and hits to justify it.  And frankly, I don't see them ignoring worthwhile retail software so I find your argument invalid, and I've already stated the financial reasons why WiiWare gets overlooked.  Destructoid especially is fond of posting articles on The Last Story and Xenoblade, as is IGN (including articles on how they want these games).  For that matter, remember the massive amount of hype that IGN put behind the craptacular Conduit, with articles seemingly every day about it leading up to the game's release?

Isn't that their job? You know, to cover games. To be fair, James and Greg are the only ones who constantly play Nintendo games, the other two are a different story. But then again, when was the last time I played a Wii game? Actually, when was the last time I turned my PS3 on to play a game? Hmmmm. You see, for me, games this gen are kind of lame. I'm playing my PS2 more often than any of my current gen systems. Persona 4 is quite the amazing game!

@ NinSage

You should go to Destructoid. They love Nintendo there, I should know; I'm heavily involved with the community there. If someone disagrees with you there, you actually get an intelligent response, not some troll comment.

I'm happy with Nintendo, but that's 'cause I'm not much of a gamer. I play games, but not as much as I use too. I sometimes struggle to even finish a game, but I still like gaming.

I don't care for online and don't play much games, so, for me, Nintendo is doing pretty great.  ;)

Interesting discussion. My stance: both NinSage and adadad have valid points. People bash on Nintendo for no reason whatsoever. Yeah, their online sucks, but you do have to admit - haters are bashing more than just that.

After ...Jons/Johns fucked up explanation of Pokemon and some other games I just can't trust his/their rants or views anymore. I played Conduit 2 online and it tells you what team you're on and you over react on the voice acting. (I'm not even mad/defending C2 I think it's ****) You guys aren't stupid, Jonny you got a fucking Ph.D but some of the **** you miss or complain about baffles me. Our game tastes just aren't the same at all and I'm fine with that and I like to listen you talk about games I've never heard of. Now, however, I just don't think I can trust what you say about em. I know it seems I complain a lot but I actually really like the podcast mainly listen for Greg and James conversations.

You called them stupid, without calling them stupid, just 'cause they disagree with you, ha! Personally, I hate Pokemon, but that's just me; however, I don't attack them, or call them names. For instance, Jonny didn't like Fragile Dreams, and I responded with constructive criticism, not a series of attacks.

It's natural to relate to the person you have more things in common with, but being open minded is something to consider. I like Jonny, even though he listens to some horrible podcasts (Filmspotting) and hates "B" movies (GRRRRRR), but I still respect him and he's my favorite! Actually, I have no favorites - I love them all <3

I think we all need a group hug. Hey, James, stop trying to grab my ass!

I have demos, games, HD movies on my PS3 and it's only taking up 17 gigs. Really, you people are crazy. You don't like it? Don't buy it, simple as that. Plus, most people don't but DLC. For instance, I don't and many of my friends who are "hardcore" gamers don't either.

49
I vote for Perfect Dark just so you guys can have a conversation about how some games don't age well.
