Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 368: Is Your Heart Big Enough?
« on: February 06, 2014, 09:09:13 PM »
Great episode, but MAN where's the PC love? You guys made it seem like every popular PC genre requires its players to master them in order to enjoy the games (Jonny's insistence with HAVING to use hotkeys, Jon's insinuation that you have to get into all the fine minutiae of a game to enjoy it, Jame's outdated view of PC RTS's)

-To James: Like Jonny said, I too recommend playing RTS's like Company of Heroes, or Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2 which also have rpg elements and loot.  Those games are more tactical driven and resource gathering is absent. Also, StarCraft 2 STORY MODE is fantastic and is not at all focused on resource management and is a far cry from the days of more resources=more power of the early RTS days.

-To the keyboard/mouse opinions: For me, it's the superior control scheme for first-person shooters, strategy games, and anything that requires or takes advantage of very precise control that's not a platformer.  I love the traditional gamepad, but it's a poor substitute for certain genres of games.  Also, I feel like the Wiimote+nunchuck emulated kb/m controls best not only because of the pointer capabilities, but from a comfort level as well with it's split design.  Having my control scheme and input device split between both hands allows for a more comfortable position and longer gaming sessions on my PC and wiimote+nunchuck games.  I think the split design will be the next standard in controllers as it allows for better ergonomics as far as comfort is concerned.

-Finally, you guy's WASD bashing was hilarious.  The keyboard is almost infinitely configurable in most games so you can change whatever buttons to do whatever.  I use to feel like you guys years ago when I first started playing on PC about using WASD and mouse control and all, but with practice and the right game to motivate you through, it becomes so much more natural and satisfying than using a controller.  I recommend playing FPS's that are slower paced or aren't twitch fests to get use to the control scheme like Portal.

I sure hope it's released here in NA and on the eShop no less. I never finished trials and tribulations and sold it years ago. I don't buy physical anymore let alone DS carts, but I would gladly pay for a digital version of the trilogy just to play the third game before I eventually get 5.

I'm excited that a first party Nintendo game on the WiiU has FINALLY decided to impliment online leaderboards in a significant way. This adds so much replay value and is a key part missing from a few great Nintendo games on WiiU (NESRemix, NSMBU's challenge mode, Nintendo Land, etc.)

I enjoy this game a lot. The only thing it's missing is leaderboards. I really wish I could see the fastest times of my friends for each challenge or the star count or something instead of having to post it to Miiverse as the only means of comparison. If there's one complaint I have about Nintendo, it's when they make these brilliant competitive games, they always seem to fail to include any meaningful or convenient way to compare your scores with friends.

Wii Sports Club will also be automatically pushed to Wii U systems, where space is available.
Wait, it does that? I don't want things automatically put on my console.

Yup. I got Wii Sports Club automatically downloaded to my console when it originally came out. Plus an info channel for Wii Fit U. Very annoying.

You guys know that you can opt out of auto-downloads, right? I, for one, find it incredibly convenient to have this stuff pushed to my system and ready for me to play as soon as I get home. I can't wait to see how online multiplayer will be with golf.

I had this set pre-ordered since mid-August when I first saw the listing on Amazon.  It came in about two weeks ago, but I've not opened it yet. Instead, I wrapped it up and put it under my tree as a gift to myself. :)

The kids don't know about it yet and I can't wait to see the look on my son's face when he sees what I have :)  lol

That's actually pretty awesome  :D

I chuckled at the Reggie in the grocery store bit. Another great write up James. I dig this one better than the last and I agree with your opinion about gaming culture and speculation. With us fans talking to each other 24/7 about our favorite hobby and the sheer amount of information we are privy to as it's just breaking, it's no wonder we are always starved for something new and exciting to latch onto.

BTW, posting from my phone has become real tiresome with these pop-up adds blocking half the posting space.

It's funny that this is a pretty good advertisement for the benefit of stereoscopic 3D now that Nintendo's basically given up on promoting that feature.

That may be, but they are still masters at implementing it in most if not all their 1st party releases ( ALBW is a good example of that).  I ,too, agree that this game would have made the learning easier had there been Stereoscopic 3D.  But like MagicCow64 said, after the first world I was able to acclimate myself to the perspective and have no issues now.

I would give this a 10 as well. I loved 3D Land and this game is what Galaxy 2 is to Galaxy for me.

If I didn't have such a formidable backlog of 3DS games (not to mention a Link Between Worlds coming out tomorrow) I'd buy this game now. I'm glad it came stateside.

Excellent! Thanks for the replies folks. My daughter and I have beaten both NSMBU and NSLU together in coop. This will be her first 3D Mario game and I wanted to make sure she wasn't gonna be hampered by the controls. As far as GamePad screen only support, I was usually the one who did that while my daughter played as Mario. She didn't have the patience or intuitiveness to help me while I played and it was a challenging game in its own right for me to just keep her alive while she played and I used the GamePad. So I don't think that's going to appeal to her, but when she wants to play on her own save, I'll certainly be using it again!

How did it feel controlling the game with a wiimote only? My daughter (4) is going to be playing this with me as well as my wife and I want to know if 3D controls are harder to get use to with and d-pad. Also, does the game support the nunchuck? I don't own the WiiU classic controller and wouldn't mind giving up the GamePad to my daughter for instance in lieu of the wiimote+nunchuck scheme.

I'm loving it so far and the Fitmeter actually makes me excited to take stairs.  Those step milestones are a really nice touch and is a great idea to motivate always using the Fitmeter beyond getting exercise credits.  As a user of both previous installments of WiiFit, I dig the convenience of the Gamepad overall. It makes checking in to the system to do body checks and loading your fitmeter info painless.

General Gaming / Re: Just got a Vita. Recommendations?
« on: November 14, 2013, 07:05:53 PM »
So, I just got a Vita as well from the RadioShack deal going on now( $160!!).  I've got it registered and have about 8-10 games for it currently through PS+. I'm excited to get in on the goodness while it's still new, but I haven't turned the system on yet because I don't have a memory card.

These mem card prices are insane.

I'm an all digital guy (PC, WiiU, 3DS, PSPGo) and I plan on doing the same with Vita, especially given that the entirety of my current library is composed of free PS+ games.  I understand that I'm not gonna be able to fit all my games on the system over time and I realize that these games are much larger on average than those on 3DS ( a large 3DS game clocks in around 2GB where the Vita equivalent is closer to 3.5GB).  I have a 32GB SD for my 3DS and have plenty of space with lots of games. I won't settle for anything less than a 32GB vita memory card as I think it would be pointless to by lower... BUT THAT PRICE!?! Right now, I can get a 32GB vita mem card for $73.26 off Amazon which is crazy (and ironic that I got a 32GB SONY sd card for my 3DS for $20 from Amazon this past summer).

I'm currently scouring blackfriday ads in hopes of a sale for the 32GB cards, but all i see are the 8GB cards for $10 at Gamestop on black friday.  That's cool for those who only want to use the card for saves and DLC, but it's a wast of money otherwise for me. I'm thinking if nothing pans out during Black friday weekend, I'll just bite the bullet and grab the one off Amazon.  Fortunately, I'm in no rush to do anything with the system as I have my 3DS hogging all my gaming attention in the handheld space.

What size cards do you other Vita owners have?

The ID is still tied to hardware, right?rights

Not necessarily. For example, if you sell your WiiU you can erase your NNID from it and reuse it on another system.  You can also still access your miiverse stuff with your NNID online without a console.

TalkBack / Re: How Do Wii U's Sales Compare to Nintendo's Past Consoles?
« on: October 31, 2013, 06:59:21 AM »
I hope the Wii U fails and fails miserably. Then at around 2018 or so we can expect a console that will actually be competitive with the rest of the industry, and be loaded with REAL games, and not be relegated to Shovelware Dumping Bin for the third gen in a row.

Why would you expect that?

Are you blind? the fact is that Nintendo can't compete in hardware at the same level as Sony and MS!

They are a videogame company ONLY, they need to make money as quickly as possible. MS and Sony, since more than 10 years ago, decided that they will give you the best possible hardware at the expense of their own money, they moved money from other divisions, and waited until the instal-base was big enough to start making any money. Nintendo does not have that luxury. From what division they gonna move money from?

Power will not bring back AAA, 3rd parties, they have been rare compared to the other consoles since the N64, despite the Wii, DS, and 3DS being huge sellers!...clearly there are more politics involved than just lack of hardware!

The only thing that may bring back enthusiastic 3rd parties, is, again, spend as much money as MS and Sony and get some AAA exclusives...so do you believe that Nintendo has money to "waste" it for years while they sell a console at a loss (+ R & D expenses), while they pay 3rd parties to port their games, etc, etc?

Sorry but the only real thing that Nintendo can do is to sell consoles for cheap, and be ready to support their hardware as if they were the only ones supporting them.

If the WiiU would have cost, say 200, with 8+ Nintendo games at launch, plus another 8 games during the following year, that would have sold better. The Wii won cause motion controls and cheap hardware, the entire handheld division always wins cause they make Fisher-Price child-proof (and almost nuclear bomb proof ;) ) hardware at cheap costs, and they support them so well that like the 10 most sold games of the handhelds are almost always Nintendo games only!...

The 3DS is showing what Nintendo could have done...don't let 3DS numbers blind you, the big AAA 3rd parties (specially western studios) are not making games for it!!!! (always there are some exemptions, like CAPCOM)...despite that the 3DS is selling pretty well (destroying the nearest competition, the Vita, 10 to 1!!!...that has never happened with any other hardware before!)...cause Nintendo support that machine like crazy.

So, wrapping up. Nintendo is guilty for having underestimated price and support. Iwata has to answer what the hell did they do with the warchest (from Wii and DS years)....I couldn't believe that they delayed Pikimn 3, from the Wii to the WiiU...are you telling me that the last 3-4 years Nintendo EAD has only been making 2 or 3 games for the WiiU since years ago?....that's lazyness and lack of oversight!...Nintendo saw Sony buying studios like crazy cause they wanted to be ready to support their machines!...Nintendo should have humbled down and should have bought 2 or 3 studios (other than the ones they currently have) to help them making more games for the WiiU!...yeah, now they say that making HD is tough, but I am not going to forgive them cause they had the time and the money to be prepared, and they didn't. They left the Wii sinking for the last 3 years and they are telling me that they have not use that time to create HD games? WTF!

I agree with this assessment. And time will tell (very shortly too) where console buying habits are going in the greater economy beyond the core gamer.  With not very exciting  launch line ups and nothing really big to speak of coming in the next 3 months after Christmas, I'm really curious to see just how fast new system uptake will be, especially with the Xbone costing $500.  This is not to excuse Nintendo's lack of hardware sales, but if the PS4 and Xbone catch up to WiiU LTD sales by the end of Christmas, well, it will be sad.

FANTASTIC!! Especially since i don't even own a charging cradle with by XL ( the one thing I miss from my OG 3DS).
