Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 153: In Memory of Michael Jackson

I think it's debatable that Mario 3 is a better designed game than Mario World, but I definitely think it's inarguable that Mario World's world map is 10x more interesting.  In fact, I'm not sure the world map of Mario World has ever been equaled by a platformer.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RFN 400: The Highlights
« on: October 07, 2014, 02:40:28 PM »
If I had been able to part with more money and get to pick a highlight, it would be Episode 321 where Jonny very emphatically predicts that Pandora's Tower will never be released in North America.  His exact quote (because I went back to listen) is "[Pandora's Tower] is REALLY a lost cause, forget that one.  Import! Import! Import!"

Xseed announced Pandora's Tower for North America literally 4 days after the episode is released.  While the crew's predictions are almost always wrong, this is surely the quickest that a prediction has ever been proven wrong!

Apparently I don't listen to enough gaming podcasts.  What other ones has Dan Adelman already been on?

At this point if you haven't picked up both Little Inferno and Steamworld Dig, you absolutely have to now.  Both are fantastic games.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 389: Best Practices
« on: July 10, 2014, 01:12:17 PM »
What truly frustrates me is that I've tried very hard to be a firewall against James's outright hatred of tournament-style Smash. I've tried to be open-minded, learn from the many listeners who have written about it, and explore different aspects of it on the show. I attended and gave extensive coverage of the Invitational at E3. In he past few months, RFN has given tournament-style Smash more coverage than any other large gaming podcast maybe ever has. I actually agree with most of what you wrote above and have tried to represent that on the show. Yet the more we discuss the topic, the more we get **** upon. It seems there is no way to win. You don't seem satisfied with anything I do to try giving this interesting subject more exposure on the show. Half the RFN crew requested, just last night, that we never talk about Smash Bros ever again. That's how fucking fed up they are with all this. But I'm not going to censor out the year's biggest release just because a few people get crazy upset whenever it comes up.

Hear hear!

I'd bet money i's just a minigame collection, in which case, you can keep it Ubisoft.

TYP may have utterly mangled my last name, but it's always a pleasure to have my requests included in an episode!

Make that a triple post when this is all done and over! 3/3 so far, and lemme tell you...

I think Jake Kauffman ended up composing better songs than Higeshime Tonomura. I jam out to the Mount Vesuvius theme and it's 8-bit remix ALL the damned time when I am streaming myself drawing. I'll gladly admit that maaaaaaybe the money bin theme sounds more like it belongs in a Mighty Switch Force game thanks to the electronic instruments that Kauffman uses, but seriously, man. Maybe it's just the fatigue of the moon theme over all these years, and I'm not saying the music in Ducktales is bad either way, but I seriously would put the Mount Vesuvius theme up with some of Kauffman's best works, along with the likes of the 80's-tastic glam rock that is sprinkled through Double Dragon Neon and Burning Town from Shantae.

I guess I kinda am a big Wayforward guy in the same Zach Miller is, but Virt is probably my favorite video game music composer, so admittingly there's some bias, but... MAN. Also, I want that Mout Vesuvius theme to be in a Mega Man 2 Romhack for Heat Man's stage or something. @__@

ClexYoshi,

I completely agree that the new songs in Ducktales Remastered are just amazing!  I also thought Kaufman's covers of the original 8-bit music was spot-on throughout.  People tend to say the Moon theme isn't as good (as Jonny does in this episode) but I just think it's enjoyable in a different way than the original, more propulsive and dancey (as so much of Kaufman's music is).  While I agree that Moneybin probably would make more sense in the Mighty! series, it's just so infectious and joyful it has to be my favorite of the new songs.  It's great music to drive to turned up real loud.

I hope this game gets really robust DLC.  New sets of tracks would be so great.

For real, 7.5 means the game is GOOD!  When did the scale for video game reviews become "anything below an 8.5 means it's a shitty game"?

Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed and even Diddy Kong Racing shows what one can expect from a single-player racing campaign, and they were awesome for it.

I always feel so alone in my opinion of Sonic All-Stars.  I thought it was a janky, confusing, un-fun mess of a game.  With boring visual design to boot.  I think the ultimate problem with it though was that Sega's stable of characters definitely leaves something to be desired...Sonic and his shitty friends indeed.

Anyone know why this is releasing Friday instead of the standard eShop Thursday?

I wouldn't be surprised if this game got localized and released as next year's "January/February 3DS JRPG that sells like hotcakes", the spot that's been occupied by Fire Emblem and Bravely Default the past two winters, respectively.  At least, I hope that becomes an annual thing! :)

A little disappointed that the "RPG" mode is so short, but I guess they'll never top the ridiculous GBC Mario Golf RPG mode.  The ending of that story mode is so strange, I mean it basically ends with corruption at the top of the club management and a gigantic cover-up.  SO WEIRD!

Either way, I'm definitely picking this game up, always preferred Mario Golf to Tennis.

It kinda sucks that it's so rare to fund a Kickstarter game that aren't retro 2D platformer and RPGs.  I know other types DO get funded but they seem few and far between to me.

It's weeks like these that I really miss Blockbuster.  Lego Hobbit is exactly the kind of game I'd rent for the weekend and have a lot of fun with but would never in a million years buy.  Makes me wish that Redbox would carry Wii U games.

I never owned a GBA (had a GB and GBC but didn't buy another handheld until I got a DS in 2007), so these GBA VC releases are like unearthing a treasure trove for me.  I wish they were on 3DS but I am having so much fun playing through Metroid Fusion finally, I don't care that much.

Sidenote: wasn't it also announced that Picross e4 was coming out sometime this month?  I just recently finished all the puzzles in Picross e1-3 and I am desperate for some more.

I would however love to see a DKC like they had on the N64, that one was fun as well.

That's dangerous to admit around here, as the vast majority of people on the NWR forums seem to harbor an intense hatred (or at least dislike) for Donkey Kong 64.  There are a few of us who loved it then and still love it.

Uhh, didn't this already happen?  I have Donkey Kong: Original Edition on my 3DS that I got through Club Nintendo back in 2012, I think.

But yes, I want Super Mario Bros. DX so badly.

The characters were labelled "Player 1" "Player 2" "Player 3" do we know if this game is going to be a multiplayer game? Or are we just looking at default names given to the npcs?

That is the big question.  Hope they explain more details at E3.

TalkBack / Re: Neal's Wild February 13 Nintendo Direct Predictions
« on: February 13, 2014, 01:24:14 PM »
I predict a big spike in the viewership of this Nintendo Direct because of the snow day that tens of millions of people are getting on the east coast.  I know I'll be watching live and I usually can't because of work.  If I'm right, let's hope Nintendo can handle the traffic...

I'm pretty sure they're going to throw a curveball. Even Nintendo can't be oblivious to the death chant being taken up around them.

Now, that curveball might be completely ineffective: Surprise SNES Remix, F2P NFC game launching imminently, Pushmo Deluxe for WiiU, WiiU ports of Kid Icarus: Uprising and Luigi's Mansion 2, HD remasters of N64 classics, etc.

I'm keeping expectations low, but I would definitely be interested in meaty DLC for Super Mario 3D World.

Yes, this, absolutely.  I know that someone from EAD Tokyo has said before that no DLC was planned, but I would LOVE Super Luigi 3D World! (or whatever)

I think it's very disingenuous of them to put 'Wii U' above Super Mario RPG, just because technically you can get it through Wii mode.

One of my most anticipated games of 2014.  This seems like the first real chance Renegade Kid is getting to prove that Mutant Mudds wasn't a fluke and I can't wait.
