An Upgraded Wii Mode for the Wii U
« on: January 24, 2013, 05:33:00 PM »
With the announcement that Virtual Console games will be playable on the Wii U's Game pad what are the chances of Wii mode on the Wii U being upgraded for a nominal fee? What about Wiiware? Could Wii games be streamed to the Gamepad?

If they are charging to upgrade individual games, why would they bother to change Wii Mode? They want you to upgrade your games, so I don't see them letting you pay a fee to get all WiiWare or VC games with some of these new features.

It would still be nice to have a more seamless interface for WiiWare and retail Wii games, akin to the way DS games and DSiWare work on the 3DS. I don't know that it'll happen, but there would certainly be merit to it.

I had to write this in a hurry due to having to leave, but what I am proposing is some kind of hybrid between Wii mode and the Wii U mode. Basically this would entail allowing the Wii to take advantage of streaming to the Gamepad, just like normal Wii U games currently do with the Wii U.

I doubt Nintendo would charge for such an update, if one were made.

There's really no reason that you shouldn't be able to use the GamePad in Wii Mode (as long as you use a Wiimote with it).

Its also too bad gamecube compatability was taken out. Considering they could just create a virtual memory card. I would say wii u has parody with gamecube as far as controls, but im not sure if the shoulders click.

The shoulder buttons aren't analog, and nor do they click, which would cause problems.

Very few games used the analog shoulder buttons on GameCube, and I don't know if any required them.

Nintendo is doing that, albeit just with NES and SNES games at first.

Its not going to happen because Nintendo purposely blocked the Wii Mode into its own little box because they don't want its exploits to spread to the Wii U.  Unless they can cover up all the exploits don't expect it.
They are going to keep moving the vc games to work on Wii U instead.

I'm hoping they start moving Wiiware games to work on the Wii U as well.

It'd take too much effort for Nintendo to cover up the exploits.  Wii mode is done and finished.  I don't expect any updates at all with Wii mode.  It's too costly for a small feature of the Wii-U.  You also have to remember that these games play online with the Wii.  So you tinker with these too much and you no longer have a Wii mode.

I'd love to have seen an updated Wii mode or even free updates for VC or Wiiware games.  But Nintendo has already announced their plan for VC.  Off TV play seems like the biggest selling point to get you to update a VC game.  If they gave it away for free, there would be almost no reason to pay their update fee.  Select Wiiware may get updated for Wii U but I'd have to think licensing would hold a majority of them back.

Purely from a technology point of view I would doubt it could be done. Wii games unfortunately assume almost total control of the hardware with little OS between the software, this causes the issue that even the slightest changes to the hardware timing could cause issues with software playback and that unfortunately necessary to make the Gamepad playback a possibility.

Current Virtual console is much easier in to add these features because the entire system is being emulated in software thus allowing additional features to be slipped into the pipeline. Because Gamecube/Wii would be running in native hardware it would require a virtualisation technology to handle the switch between the base software and the OS and then things can become very messy to run. Its a shame because it would be awesome but it's just not a viable option.

How much will the upgrade fee be per game? Would be nice to drop a larger amount to upgrade all of your games much like you can buy 'lifetime memberships' to organizations for a reasonable larger fee. I'd be willing to drop $20-30 on a total upgrade.

It does have one, I remember them making a big point of saying it did. I think you can use it in Call of Duty to play with pointer controls on the GamePad.
