Getting defensive are we?  I'm not blindly bashing anything, I've played a pretty decent clip of the game and my opinion still stands on it.

You know, USB hubs do work with the system too.  That's what I use with the Wii.  I am not gonna worry myself over it being wireless or not.

She would've ended up a clone of Peach, better if she wasn't there.

Doesn't faze me one bit, still buying it and I know several others that still will too.  You're getting a peripheral that will probably be used beyond it's pack-in title.  I can actually see the lighter DDR crowd jumping headfirst into this, and there are plenty of them out there.

The only good reason I could see myself getting this was if the new control method made the game playable for me (as with RE4) and if the game actually supports progressive scan this time around.  Otherwise, no dice.

Why oh why does the new forums have to garble up the text on the Wii Browser?  On topic, I'm getting this too.

On another note, if Wii Ware gets more inventive titles like this on a more regular basis, going to a game store for anything other than essentials is going to get even more rare than it already is for me right now.

57
I may actually get this myself, and I'm not even a fan of Final Fantasy.  Sounds interesting enough to look at.

Of all the games and stuff I've got...

24 bit color:
Wario Ware Smooth Moves (looks flawless all the time)
Ghost Squad (bet you it explains the framerate considering Chihiro outputted at 32bit color)
Geometry Wars Galaxies
Metal of Honor Heroes 2
DDR Hottest Party (to an extent, 24 on menus 16 in game though you really got to look for it which is good more games should be like that)
DDR Mario Mix (24 all the time through the arrow scroll rate looks to take a slight dive for it)
Smash Bros Melee (some of the cleanest color on the hardware)
Photo Channel
Mii Channel
Forecast Channel
News Channel
Everybody Votes Channel
Check Mii Out Channel
VC: NES SNES TG16/Turbo Duo NeoGeo Genesis

16 bit color:
Godfather (this is WOW bad with it too, worse than Luigi's Mansion and I remember that vividly on an SDTV)
Zelda WW (beautiful game, but the transparencies were murder)
Zelda TP (made some things better, made others worse)
Excite Truck (see WW transparencies)
DDR Hottest Party (see above)
SMG (though it's not bad at all, at least it doesn't dither)
MP1 (for the most part really clean, but banding was a bastard whenever you used the scan visor)
MP3 (they seem to use a somewhat different method here, looks fine)
GH3 (vertical lines in my movies, otherwise not bad in game)
RE4 Wii Edition (16:9 filter hides it to a degree)
Mercury Meltdown Revolution (how the hell... and it's about as bad as the PSP game too)
Super Paper Mario (another how the hell deal)
Wii Menu
Opera Browser/Wii Shop Channel (probably so it can deal with Flash)
VC: N64 (does the "scanline" method, still looks FAR better than a real N64 though)
Soul Calibur 2 (don't mess with the brightness settings, you'll regret it)
Luigi's Mansion (this was really ugly)
R: Racing Evolution (yikes)

If you have an SDTV, forget the top portion of the post.  Chances are you'll never notice it except for the extreme situations like Luigi's Mansion and the Godfather.

I haven't actually seen Mario Kart Double Dash in progressive scan yet to see if it is 16 or 24, it would probably be an excellent indication of things to come.  It looks like it could be 24 because even in Wii screenshots either the scanline dither or sick banding WILL show up (see Zack and Wiki screenshots) and right now I'm not seeing either or.  Then again, Zelda TP and ESPECIALLY WW didn't exactly expose themselves until it came out either so who knows.

I honestly would be surprised if the game didn't get severly mangled, they'd be better off just creating a whole new game from the series rather than porting anything.  I really don't want anymore Guitar Hero 3 incidents where the build I got was obviously hacked together just so it's on the system.

Can't say I would have.  It's like they're now pushing certain visual effects and themes just so it's in there like it is with everything else.  Oh wait, that's been the industry since it started...

I swear it's like some of you guys want this stuff for free or something.  For something like KOF94 $9.00 is STEALING compared to how much that cartridge would probaly still go for.  Same goes for games like Gradius 2 PC Engine Super CD ROM2 (It had exclusive stuff to be found nowhere else) and ESPECIALLY Gate of Thunder, both of which are worth WAY more than their VC asking prices.  I remember when the average Neo Geo game was $250 for the home title.  You will see most of SNK's games in a compilation, but the other 2 are almost guaranteed not to see any apparence anywhere other than the VC and the PC Engine.

For creepes sake, more games DO NOT need to be like Zelda, there's too many of them out there right now as it is.  My problem with Uncharted is the fact that it's exactly that mixed with Gears of War.  That, and everything STILL looks way too unrealistic and shiny.

Above what, c'mon now even I figured it was going to be a matter of time. If not from a demand of one of their own games, it would've been the endless crying from the "beloved" third party street gang that did it.  Like I said before, this will let Monster Hunter and whatever else down the road work so in a sense it's a winning situation.

Vicarious Visions in actually didn't do a whole heck of a lot with GH3 for Wii, all they really did was take Budcat's base PS2 work, add 16/9 and a couple of graphics effects, take out stereo, and add online Wifi matchups to it.  Maybe GH3.1 will actually come with PLII this time around.  Eh, doesn't really matter all that much to me anyway, I'm not buying it.  I still like the Harmonix made games better, they had less of a budget but they didn't feel so thrown together.

"Pro666 makes a good point. No competition for EA would probably mean they could slack even more."
Not if they want their name dragged through the mud even more than it is now.

I didn't say it would happen immediately, it probably wouldn't happen for another year and a half to two if it were.  No matter what though, I can see this whole deal being really nasty for sports fans who liked the 2k series of games, especially football and basketball fans.  They're probably more willing to acquire Take Two for 2k games' Bioshock and stuff than anything else.  Would they incorporate 2k ideas into Madden and Live?  A couple maybe, but don't expect too much.

If EA did make a console though, I'm quite sure that their whole NFL license deal would have to be completely dropped.  Now this actually doesn't sound all that bad until you consider this, who else besides EA and 2K made sports games worth a damn?  Sony has MLB, but what else?  Microsoft's games didn't stand up to them either.  Nintendo doesn't even have a realistic sports lineup.  No other consoles would have the Sims, Burnout series, Need For Speed series, Skate series, Rockband series, Black, Metal of Honor, Command and Conquer, the list goes on and that's without considering the Take Two stuff if they acquire them or any new franchise they make to attempt to broaden their game library.

TalkBack / Re: Baer, Alcorn Discuss Genesis of Video Games
« on: February 25, 2008, 01:54:50 PM »
Space War was originally released first to very lukewarm success.  This was what brought out the idea of Pong, something simpler that anyone can understand and play.  Pong took off with the masses, (doesn't this concept sound familiar...) Space War a.k.a. Computer Space is just another footnote of history.  I've actually played Space War and can tell you right now I can see why it struggled.  It's not that the game itself was bad or anything, it's just that it had a significant learning curve especially for a time when the public didn't have anything else to play.  Keep in mind that the only place Computer Space was playable at before it hit the public space was at specific universities.  You had to go to the right school to play it and when you did it was on a mainframe.  Now interestingly enough, the game engine was later modified so that it could be a one player game (the original was two players ONLY) that became known as the wildly popular Asteroids. (simpler because it was one player and the difficulty was far more forgiving than a human opponent)  Both games got a home conversion on the Atari 2600.  (I actually owned the Asteroids cartridge, got Space War with the 2600 retro console thing)  Even more interesting is that a simpler version of Space War was made for the 2600 later on called Combat.  It ditched the complex controls and used tanks, fighter jets, and airplanes instead.  Aside from the obvious omission of hyperspace and the gravitational pulls the game was exactly the same.  Combat got a sequel, and many companies recreated this game in numerous ways throughout the years.  As a matter of fact, Combat and Pong got recreated again in 2007.  What game did it?  Wii Play.  Wii Tanks is Combat brought into the 21st century with IR aiming, and Air Hockey is a far more sophisticated Pong which in and of itself was just a recreation of the table top game long time ago.

IMO Asteroids got a spiritual sequel that was released originally with a certain racing game that was expanded upon as a downloadble game and expanded upon even more as a software title on a major console as well as a major handheld system.  Hint, just like the older title Wars is in it's name.

So this is the "great console industry" everyone talks about.  They already own Park Place and now they're trying for Boardwalk.   (starting conspiracy theory time) It almost makes me think these guys are setting up the steps to an eventual EA branded console.  That thing would have a lot of major exclusives out of the starting gate if they did something like that. (ending conspiracy theory time)

King of Fighters 94 is NOT roughly 12 to 13MB, that would put it in the same size league as arcade SF2WW and we all know it ain't that small.

As far as Wii Pay to Play is concerned, who didn't see this coming?  This is what will support Monster Hunter 3 in Japan as well as anything else that comes out down the road that will need it.  I highly doubt Nintendo themselves will bother with this much if at all.  You'll probably still see the basic matchmaking and FC's for the majority of their games.  If Disaster gets an online multiplayer mode, this could be the easy way to weed out the kids and allow for much fuller features.

Looks to me like the only issue with the graphics I'm seeing is the idea that you guys were expecting a bigger jump than what you're getting.  The car and character models don't bother me at all, their goal is probably for the game has to support 12 of them not just online but in split screen environments as well at 60fps as consistently as possible.  It's 4 less characters on screen, but it's also 4 extra vehicles in it's place, and that's on top of fairly significantly improved track environments and lighting.  I'm also wondering if the game is running in 24bit color or 16, because if it's 24 that explains things as well.  I do doubt it though, the majority of titles are 16bit color with very few of them being 24 and the few 24bit color games is usually the simpler stuff (Wario Ware Smooth Moves, Geo Wars).

No you can't, which is why the casual and hardcore labels can go to you know where.  I mean according to some people DDR is casual gamers game and yet they're people out there who are obsessive about their perfect and marvelous attacks and can AA 10s and flashing 10s.

Well, for the most part even if the support has been somewhat jacked up there actually has been a pretty decent stream of 3rd party games out there, quite a few of which the GC for some reason couldn't buy.  Shouldn't be that surprising.

Hold up a minute...

Now if THIS is what they mean by upping their quality, then I'm all for it.  This is the one of the coolest ideas for a music game I've seen in a long time!  30 songs, but every one of them has 5 different versions done in different genres.  It would be criminal for this game to come out bad, I will murder someone at THQ if that happens.

De Blob is Nintendo-esque huh, that's nice except for the idea that I don't want Nintendo emulations from other companies like this.  That's what Nintendo is for.  You know THQ, I actually liked Stuntman Ignition, would be great to see a Wii version with NFS Wii like controls... oh wait you dropped the franchise due to failing sales on consoles where the majority of the userbase just doesn't care for it.  They're not going to boost marketshare of any sort if they keep producing the same half baked crap on the Wii and on other consoles that they've been doing lately.  I don't care what they do with their Nickelodeon titles or anything like that since they clearly make enough of the crap to justify another one right after that, but don't go downgrading games from other consoles just to try to make it "fit" with the so called "Wii Audience" only to get mad when it doesn't sell.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Time Crisis Wii?
« on: February 06, 2008, 10:35:18 AM »
Not only did it not take advantage of the system all that much, but it had framerate issues to boot.  The only reason I can sort of see why they put it on PS3 was because of the whole "We got here first!" and "Wii already has 3 other games like that and more to come.  Too much competition!"  Their FPS mode might be potentially the other reason, in no way does it even come close to MP3 or MoH2 in terms of fluid control and aiming, the damn gun has two analog sticks on it for freaks sake.  The rest of the controls are in no way decently streamlined well enough to work together either.  Reload with a button? Aim with a stick? That's so last generation!

I take that back, last generation?  More like last era.
