BUILDING A TROPHY HOME IS NOW JUST A STYLUS STROKE AWAY AS MAJESCO ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES 'OUR HOUSE' FOR NINTENDO DS

First Game from New Majesco Studios Development Team Offers Broad Appeal

EDISON, N.J., March 13, 2008 - Build and decorate your dream home in Our House, a new simulation for Nintendo DS announced today by Majesco Entertainment Company, an innovative provider of video games for the mass market.  Developed by Majesco Studios Santa Monica, Our House puts players in the contractor's shoes, challenging them to manage work-for-hire jobs and then use those earnings to create their own custom residence. A companion title to the previously announced Wii version, Our House for DS is due in stores this holiday season.

"We are incredibly excited about the Our House franchise and this extension of it. Both DS and Wii versions leverage the innovative controls of each system to create fun, addictive games with a perennially popular theme," said Jesse Sutton, Chief Executive Officer, Majesco.  "We are particularly proud that this is among the first titles to be developed by Majesco Studios whose core focus is on creating unique IP and technology with a mass market appeal."

"The central building mechanic of Our House is a perfect fit for the Touch Screen since the stylus functions as a universal improvement tool," said Bill Petro, Vice President of Internal Development and Studio Head for Majesco Studios Santa Monica. "This unique, do-it-yourself concept lets players become architect, builder, interior designer and home-owner simultaneously."

Our House allows players to design, build, remodel and decorate a wide selection of homes using the DS stylus as the ultimate building tool. Lay flooring, hang cabinets, strip wallpaper, arrange furniture and much more using the intuitive Touch Screen in 100 different mini-games.

Players choose contractor assignments from the Job Board then renovate kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms for eccentric homeowners with varying tastes in decor. Gamers can also drop by the local home improvement store and spend their earnings on additional tools and furnishings, including new appliances and accessories, to boost the value of their own residence and upgrade houses throughout the game.

Our House for DS is expected to ship this holiday.

However, the player can take advantage of faster reloading of the shotgun as well as a new melee attack!

When the enemy is within melee range, pressing the A button will unleash the powerful melee attack that can hit several enemies!

The melee attack can also be used to block enemy attacks, missile weapons, and even boss attacks! Don’t abuse the melee attack as it requires the player to reload after each use.

THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2 & 3 RETURN will be released on the Nintendo Wii in March and fully supports the Wii Zapper.

TalkBack / EA Wants Take-Two Before GTA IV Ships
« on: February 25, 2008, 04:08:33 AM »
Electronic Arts pushes buy-out offer on Take-Two Interactive.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15401

For weeks, there have been rumors speculating that Take-Two Interactive would be subject to an acquisition bid.  Many thought Viacom would seek to buy them out at a one-time price of $1.5 billion.  It turns out Electronic Arts wants Take-Two shareholders to part at $25 a share, roughly a $2 billion dollar deal.  Take-Two swiftly rebuffed the idea, so EA offered them a $1 more a share, warned them about their financial future, and went public with the entire negotiation, contrary to their original pledge not to.

EA corresponded with commands, while Take-Two remained cordial and steadfast.  Clear in all of EA's communications is that this deal needs to happen before Grand Theft Auto IV ships.  Take-Two responded on time with a dismissal.  EA retorted with the $26 a share, your future is doomed, so cave in before you ship GTA IV deal.  Everyone's expectations of GTA IV are high, so it's no surprise that Take-Two agreed only to talk after the game ships.

EA highlighted their main talking points to Take-Two:

  • There can be no certainty that in the future EA or any other buyer would pay the same high premium we are offering today. We place significant value on the ability to close the transaction relatively quickly so that EA’s strong publishing and distribution network, including our global packaged goods, online and wireless publishing organizations, can positively impact the catalogue sales of GTA IV and also the launch and sale of titles released later this year. We want to work with you and your team to complete the transaction in time to begin realizing its significant marketplace benefits in advance of this year’s holiday selling season.

  • We believe Take-Two’s current share price already reflects investor expectations for a strong release of GTA IV as well as the longer-term issues that Take-Two faces. Once GTA IV ships, Take-Two will again be dependent on less-popular titles and face increasing challenges to compete with larger and better-capitalized competitors.

  • With GTA IV shipping on April 29, development on this important title must now be essentially complete. We believe now is the right time to complete a transaction with minimal disruption for Take-Two.

Take-Two felt that Electronic Arts was "undervaluing" their company, being opportunistic in their timing, and thoroughly irresponsible to engage until after their prize title ships.

TalkBack / REVIEWS: Advance Wars: Days of Ruin
« on: February 24, 2008, 12:38:46 PM »
Tank strategy turns to the dark side.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewArt.cfm?artid=15395

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin plunges the player into a world far grimmer than that of its predecessors.  The lock-and-load, rock-and-roll style of the series is traded for a more serious, post-apocalyptic tale.  The story begins after meteors strike the earth, sending it back to the Stone Age.  The remnants of the Rubinelle Army, led by Captain Brenner, struggle against the evil Raiders to prevent them from wreaking havoc on survivors.  All the previous characters and stories of Advance Wars have been scrapped for an entirely new tale revolving around the adventures of Will, a young survivor who joins Brenner's army.

Days of Ruin will entertain you even if you’re new to the series.  Its gameplay is classic turn-based strategy, but it’s still accessible.  You direct your army in battle against another army on a grid-map battlefield.  Twenty-six main missions (complete with compelling cut scenes) are featured along with thirty additional training missions that gradually unlock as you progress further into the game.  With each mission you will be required to wipe out all of your opponent's troops or capture their headquarters to win and go onto the next map.

Immediately noticeable is how beautiful the game looks.  The graphics of the cut scenes are greatly improved, and battle scenes are harsher and more realistic.  The character and game design stay well within the expected series' established boundaries; character design is done in an attractive anime style, while tanks and bases remain the same on the grid-map.  Sagacious characters survive in gloomy desert environments - it is the apocalypse, after all.

Controls are status quo for the series, but the touch screen is used in a more intuitive manner.  You can use the D-Pad or stylus to move your troops and equipment through battle, but most players will prefer to use the stylus due to its increased accuracy.  The ability to zoom into parts of the battlefield with the R Button is a nice addition.

Anyone who has played Advance Wars: Dual Strike will have no learning curve with Days of Ruin.  Strategy remains a big factor in the game, and despite the grim storyline the strong gameplay formula of the series remains intact.  There are still battlefields in which you can't see enemy units (known as "Fog of War"); you can position infantry on mountain tops to clear the view, or send in reconnaissance vehicles to open up the fog.

Each Commanding Officer (CO) has an advantage on certain terrain, and each has a special C.O. Power.  This is in line with previous Advance Wars games, but Days of Ruin features C.O.  Powers that are more balanced and fair; C.O. Powers are limited to attacks in selected fields on the map, and the variable C.O. Super Power is gone this time around.   This adds to the gameplay by limiting the knockout element.

There are several other notable gameplay additions.  In a post-apocalyptic world you have to be conscious of fuel consumption, and new units add new levels of strategy.  The bike infantry unit travels fast and can capture buildings.  Flare tanks light the way in fog of war.  The duster is a versatile old-school plane that's effective against helicopters, but weak overall.  The game pulls out the big guns with mobile cannons and anti-tank guns.  The grin-and-gun attitude of the previous installments is gone, but the character attitude, addictive turn-based battle system, and glorious graphics keep Days of Ruin from becoming too grim.

Days of Ruin's Wi-Fi capability is the game's hidden strength.  You can play missions with up to three opponents (friends or strangers) on the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and you can even use the DS’ microphone to chat with your opponents during battle!  Player skill levels and one-hundred and fifty pre-made maps make online play fun and lasting.  You can also edit and create up to fifty of your own maps.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin packs a big punch.  The clear trademark of Advance Wars is its unique and iconic gameplay.  The serious change-up in its storyline is a testament to the classic nature of the gameplay, barely affecting its pace.  The gritty seriousness of the game seems suited to our times, but it’s an awkward change for the series.  The strange attraction of Advance Wars has always been how the series combined war with color, fun, and bounce.  There’s none of that here, but the gameplay elevates the player past the sorrowful storyline and provides massive warring online fun.

Pros:

  • Trademarked turn-based strategy gameplay remains intact
  •
  • More intuitive touch screen control
  •
  • Addictive online play

  •        Cons:

  • Post-apocalyptic tale takes itself too seriously

  •                Graphics:  9.0
The end of the world never looked so good!  The anime-styled cut scenes are sharp and attractive.  The battles are harsh and realistic.

                   Sound:  8.0
The soundtrack isn't as upbeat as previous installments, but rock-and-roll themes are still front and center.

                   Control:  8.0
Play the game button-free with a more intuitive touch screen or old school with the control pad.  There is no learning curve for veterans and players new to the series have nothing to fear.

                          Gameplay:  8.0
The story is lengthy and a downer, but the gameplay is Advance Wars turned-based strategy 110%.  No more exploding stuff for a grin; your army is fighting for survivors of the apocalypse.  Does that motivate you enough?

           Lastability:  8.0
The story and training missions hinder quick replay, but excellent Wi-Fi capabilities make multiplayer an addictive, long-standing play date.  The previous Advance Wars: Dual Strike is still more effective for quick pick-up single player battle, however.

           Final:  9.0
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is a triumph because it fixes the problems of the last installment with more intuitive touch screen control, the ability to easily zoom into the map, better-balanced C.O. Powers, and online multiplayer battles.  You'll miss the fun, spirited nature of the series, but you’ll be gripped by its thorough design and addictive gameplay.

Pan Vision Games will start production of Angel Cat Sugar games to the PC and DS format.

February 21, 2008 – Today at the Game Connection event in conjunction with Game Developers Conference in San Fransisco, Swedish-based publisher Pan Vision Games announced a three year exclusive deal to make PC and Nintendo DS games, based on the Japanese IP Angel Cat Sugar. The games are planned for simultaneous release all over Europe in Spring 2009.

Angel Cat Sugar is a brand created by Yuko Shimizu, the creator of world-wide success Hello Kitty, and has been sold in Japan since 2003 as toys and merchandise. Ms. Shimizu used to work for Sanrio, but stepped out a number of years ago and started her own character Angel Cat Sugar. In 2007 Angel Cat Sugar came to Europe and the rest of the world through Bruno Productions B.V. licensing firm, based in the Netherlands, and is now quickly spreading across Europe as a licensing brand. Bruno Productions holds the rights to Angel Cat Sugar for all territories in Europe.  The brand story revolves around Angel Cat Sugar, a princess in a world of angels, and her three mice friends Parsley, Thyme and Basil.

"We are very happy to have found a committed partner such as Pan Vision to bring Angel Cat Sugar to the games market. This is the start of a new business relationship between Pan Vision and Bruno Productions, and from both sides we hope to expand this relationship in the future to new markets, formats and possibly also other brands," says Nelleke Bruno, CEO and Attorney-at-Law of Bruno Holding B.V.

"Angel Cat Sugar is an exciting fast-growing brand that suits our catalogue and future publishing plans perfectly," says Egil Strunke, Sr Business Development Director at Pan Vision, "While we are working on the game, Bruno Productions is spreading the license to all kinds of new products and markets, so a Spring 09 release should be ideal from a timing point of view as awareness of the brand will be high," says Strunke.

TalkBack / Wii Gains Favor in American Hospitals

Rehab centers plug in the Wii with results.
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15336

Nintendo's Wii system has seen increasing use in hospitals.  Some health care professionals are calling it "Wiihabilitation."

"They think it's for entertainment, but we know it's for therapy," said Lt. Col. Stephanie Daugherty, chief of occupational therapy at Walter Reed Hospital.  She believes the Wii is a powerful tool in physical rehabilitation.

Most of the men Lt. Col. Daugherty helps rehabilitate are aged 19-25 and combat injured in the Iraq War.  The more vigorous movement in the context of a video game provides patients welcome relief from sometimes painful physical therapy.  The competitiveness of video games is also helpful to the young soldier's recovery.  Many doctors are lauding the health benefits of using a Wii in rehabilitation.

Hines Veterans Affairs Hospital, west of Chicago, Ill., recently bought a Wii for its spinal cord injury unit.  WakeMed Health Hospital, in Raleigh, N.C., provides Wii systems for patients young and old.  Spaulding Hospital in Boston uses a Wii to aid in rehabilitating patients of brain injuries.  And the health applications of the Wii do not end in hospitals.

The Wii was called "a hit in nursing homes" just months after the console hit the ground.  Wii owners have claimed losing weight playing the system.  And with the release of Wii Fit, a video game fitness program complete with exercise pad, players get a real workout.  Dr. Julio Bonis of Madrid coined the term "Wiiitis" for tendinitis from overplaying the Wii, to warn players of overexertion.  But he agreed the Wii is a definite success in physical rehabilitation.

The signs that playing a Wii can be beneficial are impressive but anecdotal.   Researcher Lars Oddsson wants scientific proof of the Wii's ability to help rehabilitate the injured and weak.  He teamed with Wisconsin State University to plan a study to gauge the effectiveness of the Wii in physical rehabilitation.

Nintendo's Anka Dolecki said the company doesn't market to rehabilitation centers, but was "happy to see that people are finding added benefit in rehabilitation."  Nintendo has donated more than 5,000 Nintendo fun centers to hospitals, with new ones stocked with Wii systems since the system's launch.
